If you are aiming for Edinburgh, follow the a7 from Carlisle- good road and some decent eateries along its length. Avoids the m74 entirely, and all the roads that will be gridlocked nearby

Cool good to know.

What's the A702 like? Looks more hilly and scenic than the a7 and the route Google maps suggested.

Its a good road but far enough north for folks to use it as a rat run when the m74 is closed

Sod that. I've left Hemel Hempstead 7.00pm on a Friday night before and crossed the Kingston Bridge at midnight. One slash/fuel stop. Bit hairy doing up to 60mph through stationary traffic between J4 - J10 on the M6 though. Didn't have to negotiate any M74 roadworks though.

Aye, because motorcycle.

I've also done a Slough to Carlisle taking 13 hours (not exceeding 40mph because carb blockages - spent more time watching my ass than worrying what's ahead) in a Maxi.

Wycombe to Glasgow too in a Reliant Kitten with a female backseat passenger that had a full bottle of Buckie finished in less than an hour which was bought at 10am. It was a relief to drop them off in Larkhall. :)

Left London. Some traffic M40 but nothing catastrophic. M42 ok, M6 Toll clear as a bell.

M6... down to one lane at J23, followed by an accident literally at J24 (Morrisons tanker into a Corsa on the hard shoulder). M6 closed at J24. Sat in that from 11.30ish until after 1am. Piss and food stop. M74 closed at J15 Beattock due to an earlier accident. Didn't even bother doing the bollocks at the Raith, came off at Lesmahagow and did Kirkmuirhill/Blackwood/Strathaven/East Kilbride/A726/M77. Worst run I've ever had on the M6/M74.

Decided that it was time to change the oil on my Golf. Just regular servicing, according to the service history the oil was last changed 3500 miles and 18 months ago, which is way too long.

Anyway, drained the oil out and it was piss thin. Really stupidly thin, took the filter off and the paper filter element had collapsed. Which isn't ideal.

Anyway, engine is now much happier. It was silky smooth anyway but now it feels more responsive, quieter and better on fuel.

Just shows. Old oil is shit oil. I'll have to give it another change in a couple of months just to give it a chance of cleaning up in there.

That's not that bad. Try this:

A701 on the terrain map looks pretty good too! I have winter tyres on, so I'm pretty unstoppable* weather conditions wise. :)

Spent a frustrating few hours on my 406 this afternoon. It failed the mot on the handbrake and an advisory for a slight leak from the exhaust. Had a look at the exhaust first and there's a series of small holes about 12" long where it seems the exhaust has scraped on something before. Not an easy one to fix I don't think unless I can use a long tube, some gum gum and a few jubilee clips? Spent the remainder of my time changing the brakes on one rear wheel. Took me ages to get the handbrake shoes on properly and then the new brake pads wouldn't go past the disc as not enough space even with the piston back as far as it would go so had to put the old ones back on. I do wonder if they were the right ones as they had a wire for the brake warning bulb but not one in the old ones? Didn't have chance to do the other wheel before it went dark so will have to have another go tomorrow. Kids were playing the wife up while I was working. Times like these I think i'd rather pay my local independent to have the grief!

Rover 820i SE has finally been sold and is off to pastures new. Well, it's actually off to be a breaker but it's better than putting up with its faults, storage, repairs and Steve. Still, it does make me sad that it's meeting it's fate this way :( It got picked up by a 1983 Mercedes recovery truck:

Didn't get a lot for it but at least it was within the 3-figure mark.

Mercedes is also off to pastures new. Poland to be exact, also to serve as a breaker. All monies go to the; "bring Mrs_Sterling over to England" fund.

Then I went and found Mahmoud and his new garage and ended up doing a bit of work, though less driving cars and more tidying up some wiring. Treated the BMW to some new wipers (about time aswell) and it will be receiving new oil/filter in the next few weeks. After that brakes will be sorted once and for all.

There's many updates on the little smart car I won from this place.

I'm a bit of an idiot (mostly) when it comes to Internet shenanigans and I wouldn't know how to post pics hence no thred.

I was having a chat to my 3 year old he was asking me why it was called buz.. just as I was pointing out the colour scheme of the car he said buz lightyear is grey! Sort of shut me up for the next hour as I called in a few favours.

Updates due soon

When I had the smart it was known as ting tong by most of my friends.

HA HA ting tong! That's a good one!

Tell me did you ever notice a rattle/nocking from the rear end when you had him? I've been under it messed about and can't find anything a miss? Just wondering if you new and if it's worth bothering with

I never noticed a knocking from the car when I had it and I did do a couple of long drives in it but mainly it was just used for going down the seafront or the odd trip to Hastings.

I changed the breather and sump for one that had a drain plug and gave it a couple of oil changes and a air filter.

I would check the plugs though as I never got round to changing them in the time I had it.

Apparently though the two piece boot lids are known to rattle and it's something to do with the boot latch but I think there's a way to adjust it or a free fix if you look on the net as its a common fault that can be sorted with some insulation tape also check the engine lid is on secure as that can cause a rattle.

Uh....check your settings, man.

I would suggest more power, less wire speed.

thanks .. it was his welder as mine died and his was gasless, i will say i turned power down a touch as metal behind was very thin.

i thought it looked gasless but then i was confused though in the last pic the welder has a gas bottle on, as long as it was solid with a clout from a BFO hammer thats all that counts to be fair

Neglected oil filters Pt 3. I removed these remains from a 55 reg 1.4 Astra my son bought. Hope I got all the bits!

Fair play Stuboy, and to be honest that Almera has done well to reach 20 years old.

Planning to resurrect a 20 year old Punto 55S next weekend, last on the road in July last year when the MOT ran out (and it was replaced by a 500). Belongs to my aunt who has had it since ex demo and it's done less than 70k from memory. She's a serial Fiat owner, this one followed a Panda and 127, she changes gear when the valves come through the bonnet so is well suited to them.

Will charge the battery and put in a drop of fresh petrol then try to fire it up as a starting point. Not sure if it's been left with the handbrake on or just in gear. Any other tips (other than checking it's not rotten underneath)? Topside it looks solid, provided all the moss is not structural. It's going to need to do about 30 miles to my usual MOT tester if it looks like it's saveable.
