I know it's hypocritical of me to say so, but you could focus on keeping the XM in fine fettle while hoarding stuff to make a shiny Hippy Elly when the sunny weather comes along.

My 2cv was definitely not* a combination of various good bits of other cars with the identity of one of them as the red number was the nicest. (Did involve having to fabricate new inner wings with seat belt mounts and adding side repeaters as the reg could have been a later one than on the shell originally)

Sold to another enthusiast for the going rate at the time and now lives in France. No kittens or nuns killed.

We need at least two working cars. Especially if the main one is a Citroen XM. I've no real reason not to trust it, but I somehow don't entirely! It'll take a goodly while for any 2CV transformation to occur, as I'm hardly the quickest of workers. Even though I did once re-chassis a 2CV in a couple of weekends (the fact that the replacement chassis was rolling was a big help, but it still took me ages to do what some folk can do in one day).

I have started my dry January.

Going to see if I can go a month without getting wet.

Fair reason that.  I'm guessing you want something with similar qualities to the 2CV, just without so much propensity to rot.  Just something small and basic and easy to maintain without worrying about bits falling off when you go over bumps.

It`s hard work.......... but worth it. You can do it - you can do it - you can do it

I am home with the new Daihatsu, no collection thread as I can't be arsed and didn't really take any pics. Non-stop drive home from Portsmouth, 3hrs, 42mpg after the overnight ferry and maybe 2hrs sleep. I am knackered.

DW surely a lime green 2CV with a black marker Muttley would be the answer? That'd be classy and would channel the essence of the Daihatsu too.

Seeing that the Merc is for sale I'm now looking for a replacement that's going to be cheaper to run and easier to live with for my wife, she needs a smaller car as her works car park isn't the easiest place to park.

So far I've found 3 options, all of which are very tempting.

$_57.JPG

First of is this Yaris 1.3 SR, It's done a bit of leg at 130000 miles but it has a good service history, looks tidy and only 2 owners, it's also local and i'm currently winning it on ebay for £600 although I'm willing to go up to £800 if i have too, there's 7 hours left.

There's this 1998 Starlet 1.3 SR, again looks tidy, only 75000 miles, 2 owners and looks really smart. This ones currently at £460 or £700 BIN which i don't think is bad.

Then lastly theres this curve ball, it's a mint 61000 mile Fiesta 1.4 Ghia, it needs the seat covers reclipping and the drivers electric window looking at but at £450 it looks pretty honest and again it's local, The trouble with this one is that it's getting quite old and i wanted to treat the wife to something a bit newer with power steering for a change.

To be honest I'd sooner wait until i've sold the Merc really anyway but it doesn't hurt to see what's out there and i have money in the savings for the right car.

Starlets are awesome. I have one as a loan car and you just can't kill it.

And the speedo doesn't make you travel sick like the yaris

That Fiesta looks a honey, but it can't really compete with the Toyotas.

In XM news, it was so cold overnight that the door handles froze solid. I had to deploy lukewarm water just to get in the thing. I have now acquired new tools of bodgery to try and make it water tight - mainly silicon sealant. I'm going to try and seal glass-to-seal rather than try and seal the entire roof up. I'm also hoping to clean the strut tops up a bit before soaking them in wax.

If its a proper factory fit sunroof then it's not supposed to seal round the glass . the water should drain via the cassette corner drains. Have you dropped the headlining to check if the cassette is rusted through or pipe come off ?

FkkkMe.... that fezza engine looks 'factory fresh' :(

Mine looks like the Titanics anchor chain.... [see my Grump post, on flat battery]

Fez or Starlet Trig; that said rml2345 had nearly 170k on his 8-year old Yaris when he stuffed it into an electricity junction box and it had been a driving school car.

I'm getting a bit fed up of having to explain it, but the normal drains are working fine. They're not the problem. The issue is that the frame that holds the glass has started to corrode, so water is effectively getting through the seal on the glass. A full removal and cure is required, but that's not happening while it's hovering around zero outside, with rain forecast.

The fiesta is the shitters choice for sure but if you want something to get in and go you can't go too far wrong with the yaris. I imagine the 1.3 goes pretty well too .

This - only in my case, north. Can bring ramps, dollies, axles stands and a BFO breaker bar. Also teapot.

Get the shell, Ian.  Think of the story you could write...  :D

Something big is happening just around the corner from me, there's kitted up armed response hidden in a road at the side of the main road by a field in an unmarked car, there's also kitted up armed response in a marked car further down the road looking up towards the first car I saw and I'm sure I saw another unmarked with kitted up armed response in around the corner, my attention was only bought to the first one as no one ever parks there and the two guys in the front looked interested in mrs fp's rs as I drove by

VOSA* will be involved somehow...

Ahh yes so the cassette has rotted out , seal away :-)

Standard XM issue number 6 I think. My drain tubes were fine, the frame was lifting aroudn the glass. I took the 'I want to get to work in the dry' approach and sealed the whole thing up and took the motor out so it didnt get pressed accidentally and buggar it up even more. Looking at the how to on clubxm, it needs a week at least of stunning weather to complete the job!

Well, sealing has occurred. Not a perfect job, but will be dry tomorrow apparently, so I can tidy it up. To celebrate, I began pulling relays out to clean them up (I gave them a quick clean yesterday, but have some contact cleaner now). Naturally, I dropped one of the relays, which has now vanished. They control the cooling fans. Arse.

Ahh well, at least you will stay dry. The cooling fans probably won't be needed until around August anyway.....
