I recall those spring bits are a feckin nightmare to get back on under the bonnet, my 190 claimed a few bits of my fingers

I see a call to my merc mechanic on the cards then :-)

Is there a fuel burning heater on that freelander?

Yes, i took it off while I had the bumper off. It hasnt worked for a while though so I will be stripping it down and seeing whats what. Internet suggests either the glowplug or injector are common failure points. I will be doing a thread on it if I can get any joy from it.

Had a poke at it today....it just spins up the fan to max speed, doesnt attempt an ignition cycle, doesnt pulse the fuel pump, then shuts off after a minute or so. I stripped it....nothing obviously wrong, glowplug works, I dont see an injector as such, it seems to be pressurised diesel from the pump wicks into a mesh of some sort and has air blown through it....its all present and correct as far as I can tell. Cleaned and reassembled and its no different.

The Freelander forum is as much use as wellies on a trout, the Rover75 forum has a few threads on them....symptoms indicate a failed main circuit board which is apparently what kills most of them.

Verdict - bin.

I got another phone call (number no 3)

A knowledgeable friend has been down to "help" with the focus - they took the plugs out again and towed the car around the block to blow all the water out, then refitted the plugs and towed it again to start it.

Obviously she wouldn't have called if it worked, so I wasn't very surprised to hear that it coughed, spluttered, made a huge cloud of white smoke and then threw "lots of bits of engine" onto the road.

Anyone got a cheap car for sale?

Is anyone near Port Glasgow? There's a vacuum that's taken my fancy... Thought id ask before popping a bid on!

Oh dear, what a shame etc.

Better offer to collect the scrap for free in lieu of the money owed and get your battery back at the same time.....

Previous experience says otherwise... It won't be scrap because she'll be assuming it's worth a lot in parts.

Much obliged, thanks! It's an auction I don't think I'll win, but I put a bid in partly to stop an 'outside deal' being done so we can see what they go for, and part of me wants to win it!

Will shout if I win

Cough/pop/buck/kick on the moped appears to have been solved by careful use of PTFE tape where the carb joins to the intake pipe.

It now pulls quite smoothly from moderately low RPM and a bit of adjustment on the choke while riding has seen it now sounding a lot more healthy at speed. The needle is a crappy profile and I think I'm going to see if the jet is interchangeable. If it is, I'll get myself a set and get it tuned up right.

Chain tensioner is utter shite so I'm going to try see about getting it set up to get rid of it and just adjust it on the rear wheel.

Ah, buying cars for other people. My girlfriend's sister's Fiesta had some sort of clutch related meltdown yesterday, so she needs / wants another car. Fair enough. Except her dad has drummed it into her that it needs to be a Fiesta (anything European that's not a Ford will break, anything Japanese has expensive parts, I refused to go and look at Kas), so cue a morning spent looking at increasingly hopeless ones. Highlight was the one that was on Gumtree for £650, pretty scruffy but seemed OK - would you take £600? 'No I've had a lot of calls so I want at least £900'. Yeah, good luck with that.

Anyway, we ran out of Fiestas in the greater Bristol area and I'd found a reasonable looking Civic about 45 minutes away, so with a skeptical look from her dad, I persuaded her to take a look. And it's decent - paint not great, but she liked it, one owner from new and the sort of history file you could use to bludgeon seals with. Done. Insurance sorted, taxed, and down the road to get petrol. Tank filled, go to get back on the M5, and... click. Nothing. Had to be bump started.

In fairness to the guy selling it, he offered a full refund including the tank of petrol, or getting it fixed next week and he'd deliver it back to her 35 miles away, which for a £600 car advertised as PX to clear, seems more than fair. Waiting for the call on Monday now...

looking at my focus air filter setup  ,and the air route is all down hill and then up ,  water could of sat in the air box plumbing waiting for that special moment for the engine to hoover it out  , !!!!

With the blessing of @crapcarcollector I moved the volvo along and bought this off of a long time customer of ours. It has slightly* high miles and needs a couple of niggles sorting.

Mike, from what they told me, the front of the car went in to windscreen level while running. I don't think the water hung about in the airbox for long.

All modernz are crap!

I took an Orion that deep for about 20secs years ago & it clawed it's way upstream at full throttle in 1st without issues. Had to dry out the dizzy cap the next day but that was all.

Ring her up and ask if one of the engine parts it threw onto the road was the battery she still owes you....

£41.68!

Second hand, but over 20years old were £20 so likely to snap any time.

Crikey ! I'd probably get one of those anti-vandal flat badges instead... sub-£10 on ebay and shite-tastic !

Maybe. My dad’s old 190 had the emblem broken twice (I have one of the old ones on my wall) - then again, there’s a chance one of the times was a neighbours dickhead kid that used to bully me.

After Old Man PX’d it showing signs of HGF (a 1.8 ), someone local proceeded to run it into the ground, and it was running round with a hole in the grille. Looked a bit sad really, Old Man always kept it tip top.

That was ten years ago now :(

I did mask up a flat badge to see how it went but it looks really awful. And really odd not seeing the gunsight from the cabin. It’s one of my favourite bits of the car!

Cheap copies are available on eBay but it’s something I look at on every drive so if it was tatty rip off I’d get annoyed, and used ones are the same age. A bit like bestowing gifts on a pagan deity, i think that if I keep buying it shiny trinkets it will continue to behave! It needs help, the mot is Tuesday!

I think I’ll fill the mechanism of the new one full of grease to ward off friction and metal fatigue.

In other news I was being tailgated whilst sticking to the speed limit down the a30 through Bagshot by some new three series bmw. Thought he’d get ahead at the lights by chopping into the other lane.

Me and him, lights turned green and I floored it. Very, very childish I know, but nearly two tonnes of German engineering on the hoof, started in, and redlined in, second at 6000rpm and he disappeared into the past. It’s like when the enterprise goes to warp speed, and you just hear the whoooooshhhh.

It’s 24 years old this year and still very impressive, so I will happily buy it a trinket to keep it content. At least it’s not a blood sacrifice like the 2cv demands.

An E320 must be fun for that, I had a 260e for a while & it did similar.

Yes. I don’t use warp speed too much, but it’s good for a smile occasionally. At about 3500rpm it’s like the engine has a nitrous injection and you need to hang on to the steering wheel- I imagine it’s uncontrollable if you’re cornering at the time.

Posted

Similar to the 260e then.

Wet roads were good pulling away quick, I'd feed the power in to keep it on the edge of wheelspin & when I got to 20mph it'd kickdown (as they all start in 2nd don't they) at which point it'd go sideways & keep accelerating at the same rate.

The grunt came in VERY handy the day the brake pedal hit the floor at 80ish braking hard for a 30mph bend between stone walls. A Swedish flick & a boot full of noise turned it very sideways & I ended up almost pointing back the way I came. It got around the bend though. I just wish I could drive like that by choice!

Oops.

Just managed to break the most important bit of the merc. Parts in Ascot dealer now shut. I can’t see a way of getting the flat section of the enamel badge off the car to replace it-any experienced hands?

You could raise money for a replacement by attatching a chain and listing it on ebay as a retro scene necklace, dubbers would fap themselves silly over it

Anybody remember this

Well it happened again, 4th time, the day after we arrived back from the UK, at her place of work..........which is 30 odd miles away. Despite always being dealer serviced and my telling them to change the starter motor relay (which they didn't) it's back in the main stealer workshop. Not surprisingly she's lost all confidence in the car, the dealership and anything made by Mazda.  Yesterday she announced she was going out to look at getting a replacement...................and 2 hours later returned with this.

A brand new Jeep no less, got at a very good price (last years stock) and paid for on the spot.

Talk about sledge hammer to crack a nut..........women......sigh.
