what are they for?

They are stickers for the indicator/wiper stalks, ignition key and headlight knob for a Series 3 XJ Jag.

XJ owners will know how these get worn away/scratched off and they are not something you can buy off the shelf, I had to have these custom made.

Normally limescale on the rubber washer at fault when I've had that.

I've tried two new pipes, the first one was shoddy quality. Managed to get a dry seal at the pipe end (double entendre thread candidate), but the machine end is not having it.

Calling a plumber for this is basically saying I've failed as a man!!

Very hard water down here means we're always fighting limescale.

PTFE. Plumbers Tape Fixes Everything. ;)

I've had a pipe leak at the metal join. As it was leaking for a while, when we discovered it, the laminate went squelchy.

I once worked with someone who had shares in a couple and was tempted by the offer of a flight. What put me off was some of his tales of unplanned landings and the consequent hassles, I particularly remember when he landed on an interchange on the M3.

Eeeep!

Apparently the wind changed. They were aiming for a village 2 miles east of here...

Is the pipe out the machine flat? I seem to remember taking a file to one once to remove a lump part way around the rim (another for the double entendre thread).

When I lived in Whitchurch one of the Virgin balloons would regularly take off from the rugby club field there.

As it came over the house early on a Sunday morning, with the burners going full tilt it would really set all the dogs off

Well the proper 'egg' solution to this would be to buy a new OEM inlet valve, cos it was cheap on eBay :-). It is possible it is the valve itself, gummed up with limescale...

Remember, these don't seal on the threads they seal on the face so PTFE isn't going to do you any good.

You have got the pipe at sensible angles haven't you? As a rule the 90 degree bend end goes into the machine. I've seen it fitted the other way round and it leaked when the machine was pushed in as it rammed up against the wall.

Check the rubber washer. Amys mums machine kept leaking, but no one could see where whwn it was pulled out. I had the inlet hose off and the rubber washer had been caught when it was fitted, years if being like this let the limescale build up until it got under the nick and pushed the washer up, enabling a fine mist of spray to develop.

Cleaned up the washer then flipped it around and fitted it flat, nipped the pipe up with my waterpump pliers and no more leakage!

The vectra did 200 miles yesterday - it did'nt break down but went into limp mode a couple of times. Car also "surges" below 2000 rpm. I think the problem is fuel related.

I think the problem is Vauxhall related.

Washing machine seems to be fixed by using original pipe and new rubber washer as suggested above. Simple, innit. We'll see. Thanks all as per normal.

This constant tension clamp removal tool arrived today and seems reasonable quality for the price. Essential for the MK1 Mondeo, or any Ford owner!

My limited experience hasn't been positive, and after 20+ years on a car they mark the pipe so much, that I'm sure leaks will occur unless they are put back precisely the same!

I've read the positive is that they expand and contract with heat more easily than jubilee clips.

I think an 45° angled clamp tool like this might also be useful...post-20084-0-60005100-1503498227_thumb.jpg

Nothing that enough zip ties can't replace, not* that I have ever done such a thing.

Went for a drive in the Proton. It is a bonny thing, with a remarkably composed ride. Wish I had more time/money to throw at it!

Two favourites from Retro Rides Gathering. I've only just had chance to check the photos.

This VW Passat estate was just delicious. I've liked them since I was a child. Totally non-pineapple!

Whereas this Mazda Demo just brough Gran Turismo right back to me! Fabulous.

Is that Demio a special model? It was imported in 2008, seems like an odd thing to import.

Does appear to be - first registered in 2008. People do import some strange things.

Took daughter's 12-year old Astra 1.6 petrol for MoT today and to my utter, utter amazement it passed with not even an advisory. Given that she turned up at our house with less than an hour to go before the appointment giving me precious little time to check it over and replace the two faulty bulbs (O/S headlamp was a pain to get at through a tiny hatch in the wheel arch liner), and her previous record for mechanical abuse and lack of maintenance, I was not too optimistic as I headed to the MoT garage. Got to hand it to Vauxhall; they make some tough cars
