The 850 is back together... ish.

 

Having drained the radiator it was discovered the gear oil was like treacle, the colour of Guinness and somewhat stinky. Ordered a radiator via my local ex-Dingbro rep which duly arrived for an altogether reasonable £96 inc. vat. Unusually for Dingbro it was absolutely spot on too.

 

I detailed the Volvo dealer shenanigans yesterday; finally got the clips to hold the transmission cooler pipes onto the radiator last night at 5.30pm so built most of it up yesterday only to find the Nissens radiator came with two of the clips Volvo fucked me about over.

 

I held off on doing the gear oil change until today due to insufficient fluid... Dingbro sent some sort of ancient Comma ATF up marked as being "suitable for Borg Warner transmissions" at £67 or so but it wasnt Dexron 3 rated so back it went. 25L of Comma's finest Dexron 3 arrived (£106.51 inc. vat) and the fluid change commenced.

 

Nice and red... this was the end of the flush.

 

 

... and this was the colour of most of the rest of it.

 

Flush done, fluid added, all lovely. Left it sitting, checked the cold fluid level and in true "snatching defeat from the jaws of victory" fashion I snapped the plastic sodding gearbox dipstick - thankfully not in the 'box. It's got about 5l in it by my reckoning, I've been a run in it and so far there is no slipping, the 'box is silky smooth and fingers crossed I'll be able to get a dipstick over the weekend.

48psi? The S-MX with two worn track rod ends can feel a bit 'lively' at times.

 

Or maybe the PAS isn't being consistent? Mind you, I've only had that on BXs with iffy pumps/clogged filters.

Yes, £85.50+vat, and had to provide everything short of a blood sample to prove ownership!

I got 2 from Ebay, one that fits all w126 {it didn't) for £10 and one for £15 that fits my car. It meant I now have different keys for door and ignition though, - I couldn't justify the neck end of £100 for my old car to retain one key fits all, it ain't no Palm Beach winner anyway. At least your lock should fit unlike my 1st one.

Yesterday was BMW delivery day to Anglia Car Auctions.

 

I'd decided to sell this way as a little experiment, and also not really knowing where prices are at the moment.

 

So as it's 300 miles from me, I investigated getting it Shiply'd but the cheapest quote was £190 from someone with no feedback and all the way up to the thick end of £400.

 

Clearly it was time to man up, tax it and set forth.

 

I did contemplate doing a delivery thread, but somehow it's just not the same. In fact the worst bit was getting caught at some temporary traffic lights between my house and the M5, the first 15 miles took 45 minutes.

Once on the open road it was easy (save for the numerous long stretches of 50 mph average speed roadwork sections on the M5).

 

Anyway here is a rather uninspiring shot of it in the yard at ACA.

All in all, road tax (for the month) + fuel etc.  came out at £75

 

So I take that as a £115 win for the shite fund.

I did mine by taking out as much as I could with the Pela pump, conveniently this turned out to be 5 litres, and refilling. I did that four times with a few days driving in between and the fluid seems clean. I used 5l cans ECP Dexron III that I'd bought on a 30% off day.

Since the demise of the disco, my current daily is a Hyundai Santa Fe.

It was one of the purchases I made when I went to an auction to get a van and came back with four non-vans.

 

Initially, I thought I would keep the crv and sell this, but have since discovered the Honda is an utter lemon.

It hadn't been MoTed since march but hadn't failed either, so my pre-bid reckoning was that it had sat in a dealer's trade-in yard because bodywork scratches.

 

Shoved it in for the test and it only failed on a bulb, wiper blade and a shock absorber.

 

I have to confess I like it. It has leather and cruise and even a ceiling mounted DVD player for the sprogs.

 

It has this weird Traffic master thing. Just an innocuous button on the side of the steering column. I pressed it a couple of times and first of all it started it giving me directions via the speakers to a destination 92 miles away. I know not where and I didn't follow them to find out.

 

I pressed the button some more to make it stop, but instead of stopping, it started phoning somebody!

In the passenger seat was my wife, on her phone, speaking to someone at the time. My daughter, who was in the back seat, and I both checked our phones in case something bluetoothy was going on, but no.

 

THE CAR HAS ITS OWN INVISIBLE PHONE!

 

A man answered the phone and asked a question which I didn't catch, then he hung up before I got my shit together to speak to him.

 

The car hasn't tried to phone anyone since, which is a relief.

 

It didnt have a tow bar and I need a tow bar. I contacted three outfits that do tow bars, but only one (a trailer company) replied. Their quote was £500 inc vat. I thought at that price it should include a trailer.

 

I bought one off eBay for £79 plus £16 for a relay thing and fitted it yesterday. Well, I fitted the tow bar and will have a go at the electrics tonight. Fairly straightforward so far, although I sheared a bolt removing one of the exhaust back boxes. My new Kielder impact wrench has been useful and also slightly disappointing. Needs more oomph.

The missus had that on her Scooby. It's like a concierge service. They'll set your sat nav destination for you, book hotels, they've even let people know She'll be late for meetings. It's all included in with the tracker.

That's the newer one, some have another row of seats. Really wanted one of them but could not afford one when i was looking. Nicer shape as well. Only think i don't like is my ocd cant cope with the off centre rear numberplate

Well I changed the ignition barrel just now- slightly nerve wracking and a bit fiddly. Used some GC gas piping in the end. Problem with the old was was that the face plate had broken away.

I messaged a chap on Facebook AGES ago about the Honda S-MX he has for sale. He has just replied...

 

But, if anyone has been blown away by my reportage and now wants one, it seems decent enough, is in North Wales and he's only after £650 for it - and I reckon he'd take an offer on that. It's a silver 2WD I think, so slightly taller than mine, without the stupid bodykit. Lacks orange interior bits though. Does need front discs and pads, which'll cost you £100. He's been trying to flog it since August.

Following on from yesterday's success with the Mercedes I have just managed to change the main jet on the 2cv's carb to 107 from 105 (whatever the numbers mean). It's a recommended increase according to Ken Hanna (well known 2cv guru, although his habit of smoking whilst playing with the carbs is a bit alarming!). It's getting a decent run tomorrow to a 2cv duck race in Farnham so I hope to see some improvements!

got to pause now to help move a sofa. fuel pump is locked, no idea where the crankshaft hole is though, nor have I locked the flywheel. if I remove the cambelt now and then lock the crank, would that work? I'm assuming it won't all line up atm anyway. what's best to lock first? crank or fuel?

Lol i wish i could take the engine out. Back now from sofa collections, may see how to take the starter off and get the bastard locked. Will unlock the fuel pump and lock the cam, then the crank. Need to work out what position the cam locking holes are though
