Is it still possible to buy a "nailed on" classic car for less than two grand?

One other option is to go get what you want from somewhere that thing isn't as desirable.

You want a Cortina.

Yeah it's not actually a Cortina but it's pretty damn close.

Just a simple train or ferry trip away, then drive or trailer home. Back in time for dinner!

Does anyone know how easy it is just to buy and insure and France and drive it back? At 2k that Tina is a bargain compared to over here and I bet there are loads of others. What paperwork is needed to register over here?

A good CX is definately something I'd want to own at some point.

So do I, and I’ve had two!

Rot, rot, rot- the sound of metal moths at work on the floors and subframe!

Series two DTR Turbo 1 saloons are rare - according to how many left I had the only one on the road in the uk for years. 80mph and 45mpg simultaneously. Turbo 2 were a lot more clattery if faster, most had porous block problems sorted under warranty.

How about an old merc coupe? I love mine and I think they’re increasing in value now, I’ve had it nearly six years and forty thousand miles and it’s now 23yrs old. SECs are worth more, but more costly to buy and run.

It can't be that hard. Especially while we're still in the EU!

There's loads on Leboncoin like that Taunus too. I don't think the old skool Fords are valued like they are here. There's all sorts (incl Capri's!) and the only thing to consider is left hand drive. Which doesn't bother me at all but some people don't like it for some reason.

If your going I'm coming too btw!

Ave sum moar!

This is nice and a good spec.

Not quite as nice but still very good, and worthy of a place on my drive.

P6 V8, I can't read much French but looking at the pics it's pretty sweet, just needs a bit of finishing.

Sir would like a CX? Left hooker for that authentic French experience?

How is your French? Sounds like a great idea for a road trip. I looked at Capris but they all seemed fairly heavy prices. I tried looking at escorts but they were all mk5s, I bet there are some mk2s but my French is VERY limited.

My French is merde!

I'm sure we'd manage though, just wave wedges of cash around!

I'd be well up for doing it anyway regardless.

Escort you say?

Bloody hell, those Taunus's are so cheap compared to over here.

If there is an Autoshite French trip you can count me in (be warned that my linguistic skills stretch to a B in GCSE French).

I'd say that makes you the Autoshite translator!

If it's the right price then just wave the right amount of euros in front of them and it'll sort itself?

Don't forget the exchange rate either. That last Escort I linked above comes in at just shy of £1600!

Even if it needs a bit of work once it's here it's still cheap.

Plenty in France and Germany but I've had zero luck in france, Germany is a dodle though

Too right, I dropped French when I was 14! Any nice ones in the north that wouldn’t be too much of a tow/ push if it all went tits up?

That black mk1 is lovely, as is the Somerset.  I wish I had money and a yard!

If there's a more perfect replacement for your Volvo, I can't imagine it.  Are we going in Huggy or the Mercury?

Depends who gets the Plymouth!

Has the world gone doo-lally,

or are even mid 1980's cars now fetching far more of a premium than 1970's cars were in the 1990s?.

No

Yes

Mainly because

1) 80s cars are so much more usable

2) this next generation of buyer is credit rich like no generation before

3) interest rates like no generation before it

Well it would be an equally suitable replacement for Giffer, I suppose!  Oh, decisions, decisions......

You can still get a fairly nice mk5 Cortina for 2 grand. I've seen a few in low spec but pretty clean go for not all that much,

I was looking for something 80's hot hatch is for around 1500 quid. Xr3i forget it, Astra GTE's and Peugeot 205 GTI's not a chance. I paid a grand for that scabby Maestro all be it with a years ticket. Nice ones are over two grand.

There are some bargains on that french site but it seems like a ball ache to me especially if your up in Scotland. I'd rather spend a little more on a rhd UK car and have a conversation in a language I can understand. Failing that English.

Ah! a ladder......how much?

The two Taunii look good, nice straight cars as opposed to the molested old shit you find over here for 13 times it's 1989 auction price. Taunii were also German built by Ford Werke AG and are rarely the sorry rotten old teabags the Dagenham shitheaps are. I can see these are 2 grand cars - not my two grand but if you wanted a Cortina......the 1.6 GLS is probably a sweet enough drive as well.
