Excellent culekshin fred. I think these 172's will be the next collector's item along with the Saxo VTR/S, give them 20 years and people will snap your arm off for them.

I saw this 172 Exclusive in my local breakers a few years back. It was number 116/172. IIRC a lot of them had 'Y172 ###' plates that were assigned when they were first registered.

My brother came over this afternoon and we set to looking at what I'd bought.

This was the first time I had seen it in the flesh.

Initial viewings appeared positive - bodywork and interior both in decent order

The boot provided some foreshadowing of findings

Missing spare but full toolkit

The engine bay showed some signs of barrying, plus some evidence of a fairly long layup.

Preventative measures had been taken to stop ECU/water Congress

We knew it needed new front indicator bulbs -access was (as usual) spectacular*post-17572-0-12084200-1511126582_thumb.jpg

And then it was on to the 4 corners check.

All 4 tyres are spot on, wearing a pair of Fallen Ziex at the rear, and a pair of Hankook Ventus at the front

This is most welcome news!

The brakes at the rear, however were a different story.

As is oft the case with the 172s, the rear floating calipers were very stiff, and the rear discs looked ropey. I expect a fail for lack of force/imbalance and handbrake at least.

The sills seem solid, and the exhaust looked ok.

The front had better news re brakes - discs and pads looked about 1/2 worn

All balljoints/track rod ends looked ok, and CV boots seemed intact.

There is one spring missing a section, so 2 front springs may be in order

We'll see how big a list she gets.

rear discs on shappin list first without putting them to a test

No point buying owt til I know it is worth fixing:)

The rear discs and pads are phuqued

Posted

Someone’s fitted the anti rattle springs to the rear pads upside down too. Rear discs, and a spring isn’t too bad considering the it’s age and miles it’s done, especially if it’s still solid in the sills etc

We shall see:)

Fair point re the springs- I shall sort them if sorting it out:)

What will be your plan if you find something ominous? Breaker/keep for spares for your other one

Good man yersel. I am unaware - expecting sub £400 fully comp with business use when I swap it onto the E36 ins )assuming no spectacular MOT fail)

Posted

It's also on the MOT trail just now- can hear it growling away on idle.

Which reminds me, that backbox needs swapping

Posted

fingers crossed.......... looking forward to #shockfirsttimepassomgtheyllneverbeleiveit news.

Long time ex had a Clio (Mk1) - loved throwing that thing around. With these engines they must be absolutely mental to 'play' with.

The insurance quote I got a friend got was cheaper than the Alfa, nearer the cost of the Volvo 940 I had!

Posted

Well the scores are in...

A fail as expected - but only on

1x front spring

1x handbrake cable which failed under test.

I'll fix those and get an MOT:)

Posted

Is that the standard air box setup? looks like them v6 airboxes the cliosport crew go mad for. Or maybe its just what the early 172's had.

Yeah even a 1.1 RN is a hoot if you can keep the momentum.

The 2.0 F4R makes that a bit easier.

Lovely once you get the heid round the idea that they ain't RWD.

Nope. MOT first, cosmetics later. I'm not one to be offended by such things
