makes it look like there is a centre diff going out to the centre wheels, and longitudinal driveshafts to the front and rear wheels...

Seems to me that the simplest solution for road driving would be to just remove the longitudinal driveshafts and make it 2wd with only the centre wheels driven. That would enable you to commute in it/drive into the ULEZ.

Put them back in for off road excursions.

Looking at this detailed* engineering drawing fitting viscous couplings might be possible fore and aft of the middle axle, or even some kind of air or hydraulic locker.  Not a trivial task though.

It does give me some hope that there are still places in this joke of a country where I can afford to buy a house and which aren't at latitudes such that I risk having my daffodils nommed by polar bears.

Bought myself a genny 😀 Should hopefully run my welder. It's 3.4KVA.

Starting to take YouTube more seriously again.

Generators always fun to have :) 

but Im not sure if you are aware, but it might not work for welding sadly

I wont get into the details but as @Six-cylinder and @Talbot (IIRC!) found out recently, when you try and weld on one, the generator cant react fast enough to the sudden and large on off load a welder has, so the welder is never able to strike an arc properly

from discussions in the Virtual FoD Zoom calls we think a large bank of Batteries and a Large big fuck off DC to mains voltage inverter would be a better bet for welding away from the grid :)

If Tig, possibly.  If Mig, I very much doubt it.  The extremely choppy on-off nature of the load is incompatible with a smaller generator.  It's nearly impossible to strike the arc, and when it does strike, it's like welding at 20% power.

Surprising that they didn't manufacture it in (switchable 2wd or some other way of avoiding driveline self destruction when driven on a road) , but as someone said, that's military procurement...

Never intended to go on road.

Used to supply BAOR/Allies when the USSR took all the bridges out. Bear in mind 'wind-up' is really torsion followed by shear. Stuff will break. Quickly.

Yes, "wind-up" does sound quite gentle. When I looked up what it actually means, the thought of those gears and shafts stressing against each other actually makes me feel quite anxious.

You could fit seats in the bed and re-register it as an open top bus, then you could drive it on a car licence.

amusingly while somewhat understandably GSJ413 is registered as "Special purpose" 

GVO282J is actually registered as a crane :)

wonder where that puts it on the the ole licensing/Road Traffic act spectrum!

I doubt its a problem, and may even be advantageous  if cranes do have exemptions from certain licensing requirements, but I have not looked into the what the rules are for cranes, so I cant say whats what exactly

but if it does turn out to be a problem I doubt you would have much problem changing the Body type to "Special purpose"

(Id like to see someone try and argue that a stalwart is NOT a special purpose vehicle LOL)

It's for riding the Jet Ski I am currently high bidder on. I can lift it in and out with the HIAB* 😀

*To be pedantic to myself it is actually an Atlas crane not a HIAB.

I got outbid on the Jet Ski, not prepared to pay over £500. The Stolly isn't going to be swimming for a while so I will just get one later. They are probably cheaper in Winter too.

There are such things as welder-generators, which would be a pretty cool thing to have.   Most of the ones on eBay for sensible money seem to need a repair, which suggests they either lead a pretty hard life or they're unreliable things.  I suspect it's the former.

You were all right the generator I bought is no good for welding 😞 Still going to keep it though as I like it. Yes there are welder generators.....

They're specialist and complicated bits of kit and priced accordingly; probably better to just get a big enough ordinary generator to cope with your sparkly stick.

I think I would go with the Large bank of DC batteries and a really big 5-8kw Mains inverter

as that is a lot more versatile then a dedicated welder generator

for example once your done welding you could plug in a kettle and make yourself a nice cup of tea :) 

(and if it all blows up you could probably use the string of batteries themselves as a crude arc welder LOL)

The windows open on a MK1, MK2's have bigger windows and wipers for all three. MK1's have a gated shifter etc....

I would like a big bank of batteries in Stolly anyway so I can operate the crane without running the engine (currently not possible, will be modified) for a good period.

So on board welder?

There are kits available for PTO welders(really just a big alternator with a box of tricks) or the DIY-inclined can monkey about with lorry or bus alternators.

They are quite complex things, and I believe have some fairly clever control system in them to ensure the choppy nature of welding is dealt with.  I'm sure I heard once that they use a bank of very large capacitors on the DC side of system to cope.  I'd bet that newer ones have a fairly decent inverter in there too somewhere.

Pricey.  Cheap ones are cheap for a reason... they usually need a very expensive repair.
