HMC Posted April 4, 2019 Author Posted April 4, 2019 During my dredge of the cheapest running driving mot’d mercs I saw a lot of rust, and one car that I found oddly appealing, even though most would run a mile..... My enquiries didn’t progress far..... Maybe they thought I was taking the piss? Or tripping at the time? Anyway a near miss. Marm Toastsmith 1

HMC Posted April 7, 2019 Author Posted April 7, 2019 Bump Anyone fancy my merc camper? had a bit of interest originally, a friend said he’d have it locally but after a while that doesn’t seem to be happening. It’s a 1998 Mercedes 208d MWB. Originally a minibus (401k!) and fully trimmed etc, it now has 6 seats and a raised double bed with large storage under, Down as a motor caravan on the v5 It’s pretty tidy for an old sprinter - underneath is good but the corners of the door bottoms, bits around the front screen and a couple of the wheel arches are rusty, zoom in on the pics. It has a non turbo 2.3 om601- about 70 something bhp and it is SLOW. I maxed it at 75 mph which is it’s geared maximum reading a brochure. I must say I’ve got used to it and once it’s wound up it’s not so bad with the benefit of simplicity and bombproofness compared to the CDI generation of sprinter power units. Seems to have an off beat idle when hot but that might be an engine mount? Done 600 miles in it over a few weeks and it’s a reliable old slogger that is on the button. The brakes clutch and gearchange are good. Factory air con which doesn’t work. A remote heater for the rear which is plumbed into the cooling system- it’s fan doesn’t work. It’s pretty basic as a camper with the raised bed, a stowable rail mounted table and a solar panel charged separate battery with inverter and normal 3 pin domestic plug/usb point and an opening skylight. MOT to September if memory serves- for the purposes of a swap I’d be happy with a straight swap for something worth 500-1000. Alanism, scdan4, Cavcraft and 4 others 7

HMC Posted April 9, 2019 Author Posted April 9, 2019 The merc sprinter camper has found a new home, and today I sold the merc e280 I had last week for what it owed me. That drove lovely and was suprisingly good on fuel for what it was; and for what it was wasn’t too bad rust wise. I collected the e280 replacement this afternoon. Less rust (obviously) More miles, lots and lots of history, drives nicely with a sweet gearchange that reminds me of a carina e I used to have. It has less soft touchiness in the interior and how things open and close etc compared to the Benz. But I suspect Toyota put less emphasis on perceived quality; my gut feeling is this will just keep on keeping on being a Toyota. It certainly feels very competent and bombproof. There’s a strange little fabric pouch in the boot which seems to have toyotas late 90s attempt at sat nav in it Taxi!!!! Dick Cheeseburger, Datsuncog, jumpingjehovahs and 16 others 19
The Moog Posted April 9, 2019 Posted April 9, 2019 Always liked the look of the estates ... Wouldn't want one but came from the same blobby mould as the scorpio.
HMC Posted April 12, 2019 Author Posted April 12, 2019 Did Einstein state that? If he did, his opinion would gain new credibility as I set out tomorrow on another collection. mrbenn, Marm Toastsmith, Six-cylinder and 3 others 6

HMC Posted April 13, 2019 Author Posted April 13, 2019 Came back over the moor, it’s done about 90k and had long term giffer owners. It drives well and the rear suspension still works! The interior is really tidy, the body not so much. At 80k and 16 years old (2016) there’s a bill for recovering it because one of the Achilles heel front coil spring perches had rotted and the suspension on that corner collapsed. Piss poor (unsure what that translates to in German) and it’s got the usual wheelarch / boot corrosion. However it was dirt cheap and it’s got full history and 7 months mot so can’t complain. It’s a bit of a dud in the range engine wise- the e240 v6 has about 170bhp. It’s oddly very marginally more thirsty than the 280 (200bhp) and on a par with the e320 (220bhp) and not that far off the e430 thirst wise. At least according to the sales brochures it came with. Yes let’s buy that the stats have won me over. It is geared for 3000rpm at 70 rather than the 280 which is more like 2400 so maybe in an effort to make it less slow they geared away the economy? Maybe it was there to attract company car sales? Dunno. Here it is on Dartmoor..... gadgetgricey, Shirley Knott, somewhatfoolish and 18 others 21
The Moog Posted April 13, 2019 Posted April 13, 2019 I am now disappointed that more collection threads don't contain button and felt tip on face. I expect Bramz/JimBell to up their buttons/felttipface game. HMC, tooSavvy, Pillock and 2 others 5
