NEC Classic Car Show - November

Alfamale

Recommended Posts

In a surprising change of plans, I’m now going along on Saturday. I will be looking for spares support and group therapy relating to unpopular models of Lancia, Renault, Talbot and Lotus (see sig) plus Mk2 Granadas.

In an unsurprising further change of plans, I woke up feeling like seven types of shit with a cold so am staying home. Shame as I was looking forward to catching up with some folks from here, and maybe also doing some random autojumble shopping. Oh well.

Post pictures, people. Need cheering up.

I went yesterday.

Went into the press office and bumped into a miserable bastard dressed like an extra from the Shawshank Redemption, gleaned from the "how to dress like a writer for C&SC / Octane" etc handbook. I said hello, he replied with an ignorant grunt. Fuck you then.

Wobbler strode speedily about all day, on a mission.

The show was huge and an utter shambles as it always is. Lots of great cars on club stands, eye wateringly overpriced stuff on dealer stands including an immaculate 1988 635CSi Highline for 35 grand with rusting wings and arches and elsewhere, a 1968 Almond green Cooper for 25 grand that appeared to have had a body restoration by Torvill & Dean.

Five white Escort Twin Cams on the AVO stand, four of which were ex works cars. Badly tonced up Minis and over restored Cooper S's. A very average auto jumble. Two Gullwing Mercs, one of which the owner allowed me to sit in. Lots and lots of really, really nice old Mercs.

Two Jaguar clubs:

The JEC with a priceless 1963 Linder/Nocker racing E Type that you could walk up to, touch, and admire. Nice people.

The JDC with their usual roped off/fuck off, peasant stand and their disdainful attitude. Bunch of arseholes. Who the fuck do you think you are?

Kev Davis and the lads on the Princess club stand. Nice display, thanks for the effort promoting a great car. Appreciated.

New cars on the Alfa club stand. Righto.  :?

BMW Club stand looking very professional and corporate with a couple of hotties selling insurance, nice club people, really keen and chatty.

Some utterly lovely Mark 1/2/3 Consuls, Zephyrs etc including my car of the show, a red 1959 Zephyr II on wide steels and packing the straight six but with throttle bodies and injection. Just stunning workmanship.

Ignored the celeb shows (Ant who?) and laughed at the bloke from Silverstone Auctions and their 20 quid entrance fee.

Walked 6.5 miles between 10 and 6.30.

For the first time I felt like I needed two leisurely days rather than one hectic one talking to folk. A great show despite the flaws.

The BMW Club stand was a little confusing for me, only M5’s on there including £110k worth of new metal. Alfa were not the only ones guilty of displaying new cars, in addition to BMW there were new motors on MG Car Club & MG Owners Club too.

Although I did think that new MG ZS was particularly nice, future shite right there.

BMW UK provide the club with the big trailer type outfit so they lent them that and a new M5.

The new M5 isn't really my thing but they wanted to do an M5 themed thing this year.

+1 on helpfulness from the BMW chaps. They went out of their way to put me in touch with people who can help with the New Class 2000 I need fixing, couldn't have been friendlier.

I did like how everything stopped at 11am for rememberance silence, it was quite eerie as you could've heard a fly fart it was that silent

met fuzz townsend by sheer chance as we were passing the Carole Nash insurance stand at just the right time, comes across as a humble top bloke

Yep a good day out... now on the way home.

Good stands from loads of clubs... and a few knob clubs with roped off areas.

Saw some beautiful cars and some ugly as hell but intriguing motors...

Had brief chats with both Dollywobbler and Sam Glover which was nice, and helpful folks on the MX5 and Saab club stands helped with a couple of questions i had....

And I saw an Allard Clipper. Which was worth the entry fee alone!

So all in all a grand day out gromit!

Looking forward to this tomorrow. Showed my FiL dollywobblers live videos and got him rather over excited.

If I see you tomorrow DW, I'll try and make sure I say hi! :)

Can be my claim to fame this weekend. ;)

What's up with it?

Clutch slave cylinder is leaking badly. Ordered replacement part (which according to the BMW parts system is correct) from the states but doesn't fit. Suspect it's had a replacement box at some point from a different car but. I idea which. Got a part number off the gearbox but can't trace it backwards. Guy on BMW stand suggested a few forums to try and also the phone number of a specialist who should be able to help.

What year and model is it? These arrived in '66 and ran until the E12 was launched in 1972. 2000, 2000Ti or Tii? Should be a Getrag, either 232 or 242.

It's a 1969, 2000 sedan. Imported from South Africa so history is sketchy. I need to get it out of storage tomorrow and have a better look, but I reckon it's a much later box, probably an upgrade to 5 speed, possibly off an E21.

It's a gorgeous car though, please excuse the slight thread hijack

That Multipla was lovely. DW, if you see the black Sierra Cosworth 500 from Edmonton, could you have a look at it for me. It looked ace at the traffic lights but I would love to see the interior. The chap has owned it for 20 odd years.

Thanks

I went with my mate yesterday and had a great if knackering day, felt funny to see my Dolomite there, especially as the car polish stand it was on was bemused that the new owner had left it there and spent all day telling them what he haf done to it (basically paint the exhaust silver...).
