Who's good at maths ?

I'm hopeless , really number blind I kid you not...

 

I want to build FiL a small garage .. 16ft x 8ft  i assume a mk3 astra hatch will go in, just ?

 

I've got 323 linear ft of 3 1/2 " t&g  and

 

            401 linear ft  of 4 1/2   t&g..

 

 

I have 4 off  windows in frames   37" long  x 31" high 

 

and a side door 29" x 77"  that could be used too..

 

Assuming i can use existing double doors on one end ...I want 2 sides and one end,  and the end   is pointed for a pitched roof...

 

I have tons of 4x2  an 6x2  and 1" ply for the roof..

 

Have i got enough cladding? 

Doesn't matter if the cladding is vertical or horizontal..

if we know the height then it's easy to work the rest out, would be even easier if you would use modern measurements instead of ancient arcane measurements. (also known as what is it in mm please)

Is that why I'm stuck?    Hang on I'll find a modern ruler ...    31/2 " is 90mm  4  1/ 2  " is 115mm  that's what it'll cover without the tongue.  8ft is  2440mm  16ft is double that.. ah 4880mm?  Say 1800mm to the eaves

a door 750mm x 1960mm

 

Apex shallow ,I could probably find some wood for that if not enough t&g

16 foots by 6.6 foots  is  4.9 x 2 metres so about 10 squ metres

16 foots by 6.6 foots  is  4.9 x 2 metres so about 10 squ metres

8 foots by 6.6 foots  is  2.5  x 2 metres so about 5 squ metres

 

 

 

apex, one at each end so    2 times         45 degree 45 degree 90 degree 

 

8 foots by 6.6 foots  is  2.5  x 2 metres so about 5 squ metres

 

Totals about 30 squ metres

 

 

 

Woods

 

 

0.09  (3 and a half)  x  70m  (232 foots)  =  about 7 squ metres

0,115  (4 and a half) x 120m (400 foots) = about 13 squ  metres

 

total about 20 squ metres

 

 

so wood alone not enough .

72"/3.5 = 20.5 round up to 21 - 21 x 3.5" high

 

21 x 16ft = 336 ft of 3.5" per side

72"/4.5 = 16 - 16 x 4.5" high

 

16 x16ft = 256 linear ft of 4.5" per side

 

Rear of shed Assuming 7ft apex

 

7 x 12" = 84"

 

84/4.5 = 18.6 Round up to 19

 

19 x 8ft = 152 linear ft 4.5"

 

I'd put windows and doors on the 4.5" cladding side to save more for the back, you might still be short though.

 

 

If your not sure take some timber and make some story sticks, mark 6ft then mark off 3.5" down the length to see how many pieces you need to get the height you want, then times it by the length of your shed in ft.

We have all done it differently, mine doesn't allow for a peaked roof and personally 1.8m is a bit low but your not far off. *My maths may be slightly off*

 

Very roughly:

Length of walls needed:

2.4m + 4.8m + 4.8m = 12m

Height 1.8m to eaves leads to 12 x 1.8 = 21.6 meters squared.

 

you have 4 windows which are an area of 2.93 meters squared

1 door which is 1.42 meters squared.

the 3 1/2 inch cladding is 8.85 meters squared

the 4 1/2 inch cladding is 14.03 meters squared

 

Cladding you have 22.88 meters squared and with the door and windows you have 27.23 meter squared

 

Edit also no wastage allowed for!

Aye you will have a bit of wastage as well, i usually allow 10% for timber faults/inability to cut straight.

 

I haven't accounted for windows and doors either in my calculations so you will save a bit there. 6ft is a bit short though unless your a family of midgets.

Wood is perfect , high quality cladding  20mm thick brand new .. but in lengths ranging from 5ft to 8ft   

 

£15  "  wood lengths "   on ebay  ..I was the only one to bid !

 

Loads of joists  free from local chapel refurb , and 5  sheets of 25mm ply  also free from a car port demoition.. I had to pay 50 quid for half a ton of new marley slates, there's not enough of them i do know..

4x2 frame and 6X2 roof trusses at 450mm centers will take a fair bit of weight if built well enough with decent triangulation.

 

A bigger concern is that the roof will not have enough slope to use the tiles and make it drain well, you might want to check before you use them Christine.

I've got grade  A    O level GCE in Physics ( and very proud of it too, but we were the first year to be allowed calculators 1978 ? and had a fantastic teacher " Suck squeeze bang blow  , boy !" )

             grade A   in G.C.E. Metalwork

             grade B    C.S.E  in Woodwork

             grade B      CSE  English

             grade E      maths              I just can't do it end of..

 

My father , was a super mathematician would have worked it out in his head in seconds, sadly not I.. He could do a Rubic cube too   but then, he couldn't fathom how a jet engine  could possibly work !!! Used to get furious with me when i couldn't do my maths homework 

 

Mum made this bowl. She had to leave school at 14 and work in grandads shop.  First attempt at metalwork evening class 1978.

I'd still be trying to make it now. I've sod all idea what marks I got at school but I know I didn't get anything maths and I never went to the English exam.

 

Made up for it now as I have an equivalent A grade by passing functional maths and English level 2 last year. They're free I bet you'd piss them.

Yer doing it wrong. Dont piss about working things out on the back of an envelope and scratching yer head.

 

Just start building it, realise about 3/4 the way through you havent enough wood, patch it with some chipboard and say "I'll get some more next week" and then leave it for 10 years.

Running the timber length ways would result in less wastage, but timber may rot sooner.

Windows help take up space in the walls, but are very helpful to Burglars.

25mm ply is heavy, my roofs about 14mm.

Roofs are a pain, I'd maybe use a single sloping roof rather than pointed

If short on timber buy some more.
