On the West Midlands travel route 140 to pick up a bit of a bargain. Sadly I will not be getting to keep it.

Just stage 1 of a long journey North.

Posted

Stage 2 is a trip to Cannock, Chaseracer's tame mechanic.

If it is too shit then the auction can be stage 3.

Did Cannock Motor Auctions close down?

Not everyone can afford such decadance

I know where you're going! (And if you come back alive and with all the wheels still on - well done!)

From the bus station

I noticed a rather striking car that I was not going to pickup (I hoped)

The best car purchases are done in the most delightful of places

The 10 mile back home didn't require a petrol station stop, but did require a very gentle throttle to avoid very loud transmission clunks

Finally on the drive next to its cousin, they share warning light clusters don't you know.

So the car is a modified Clio 172 with a least one drive shaft in a not very happy state of mind.

Sharp left turns are met with a lot of unpleasant noise, so kept the journey back under 40 mph (as that was the speed limit).

Apart from that, it seemed to steer straight, brake straight and the engine and box are smooth.

If it is a simple fix then 320 touring may have bagged himself a very good bargain though.

Looks much better than hoped- thanks again chap!

I'll hunt down Tame Mechanic on Monday morning and we'll sort out a transfer Cannockward.  Might bring it north for you myself, Neil!

The transmission clunk might be the engine hitting the bulkhead- IIRC from when i had mine you can loosen the upper engine nount bolts, get an assistant to hang off the engine and yank it forward as hard as possible while you retighten everything.

Also the bushes go in the gearbox "dogbone" mounting.

Cheers for the info - we'll see how she gets on at the garage next week and take it from there

Having spent the day at Bo'ness hillclimb, I may see a certain future for this car...

Still struggling to get a hold of the tame mechanic for this- I may need to look further afield for options..

It's pronounced smerrik.

What, Halesowen is pronounced Smerrick! Bloody local twang really confused sometimes

Yeah, they moved it wholesale closer to Oldbury when the combined authority was created in 1973 and called it the same as Smerrik.

Have some disappointing footage of the oily bits of a Clio.

I not sure how much slack there is meant to be in the prop-shafts while the car is in first gear, bit I was surprised that it was so much.

The boot halfway on the drivers shaft was well and truly shafted as well.

Initial findings from the garage..

It has potentially stripped the diff, so not engaging all the time.

Could be a new gearbox shift..

More to follow:(

After driving it the 20 miles from Birmingham to Cannock, that was my vibe,

The gearbox was good but something in the transmission was moving/out whack when steering put a side load into the axle shafts.

There was much coasting off power on roundabouts and using as little throttle as I could elsewhere.

The obvious culprit is the diff, either the actual cogs or the bearings that are meant to hold it in place.

Rare that a diff will go before a clutch or gearbox I'd have thought, but should be cheaper than a full box to replace.

A second hand box is not too bad, real issue is getting the box off. Think its a subframe off job

I am weighing up my options the now!

Wonder if some previous owner was a burnout fanatic.

Get down there, get in it, call AA/RAC to tow you home.

Fix at your leisure then GLF
