I believe that was the idea - to draw attention to the fact that they used some (obsolete) Merc engines at the time.

I seem to remember Tatas were based on a 190,there were some converted into hearses & one had Mercedes badges

A couple of cars on ebay being threated with scrappage.

Posted Image

Have emailed the seller of the mini

Nice example, why scrap it? If you use it for scrappage you know that's what will happen. If you walk into any car dealer, and ask for a discount, these days you will get it. Get a grand off a new car (without scrappage), sell this one for a very reasonable grand, and the numbers are the same. Surely this makes more sense?

Unless of course the scrappage angle was just a stress inducing marketing ploy?

Got what seems to be a genuine reply

Good Morning fred

Thanks for the complement, the photos dont really do it justice, scrappage is not good news, the thought of it ending this way it is certainly inducing stress into my life at the moment. I sincerely hope that someone buys the car and it goes to a good home, the scrappage deal we did for the new car includes a £1,000 no strings attached discount plus the £2,000 scrappage, you are quite right dealers are trying very hard at the moment. I can assure you this situation is not a "stress inducing marketing ploy" Im trying to sell the car rather than subject it to a sad ending, the car is obviously worth a lot more than scrappage, the problem i have is that the scrappage scheme is part of my sons deposit for his new car, my son has no way of raising the required deposit by other means other than selling the car quickly, time is too short, he only have until the 15th of July. Best regards

Steve

So I replied

Hi Steve,

Have you actually tried to get a discount out of the dealers without scrappage? If I were you, I would play them off one against another, walk into a Ford dealership and say Kia have offered you one without a deposit, or Toyota will give you the discount without a scrappage car.

At the end of the day, the dealers' contribution is only a grand, so whatever they offer on top of that (even the most publicised 2 grand) is coming out of their pockets. They can afford it, don't you believe otherwise. Aside from that, this is a waste of a good car and it's even bad for the environment! Could you not just arrange for the car to ba a trade in, not scrappage? That way they will sell it on, not scrap it. If they want your business, they will come up with something. Point out to them it's worth more than scrappage anyway, so would see a profit as a trade in. The numbers do add up, they have to stump up a grand, so if they get only 2.5 grand they are in profit.

Try it, might work

Fred

I have nothing to loose!

Worth a try Fred, He must be some kind of classic car lover having another Mini, A Morris Minor and a Jag E-Type in the driveway.

Well if it saves one car, it will be worth it. If this works, I will do a thread on contacting sellers to get them to try to sell rather than cash in on scrappage.

That was quick, got a reply

Hi Fred,Yes, we got £1000 off the list price before scrappage, i understand exactly what you are saying, all things equal, we would have done what you advise, the deal we struck included stuff like free insurance and a really good finance package, the car was also a brand which my son particulaly wanted.thanksSteve

And here's mine

Hi Steve,Well there is no reason the dealer can't offer the same without scrapping the car, it's in their interests anyway as they won't get their bit of the scrappage back, but they will get their money back of they part ex the car and sell it on. They have in effect already offered you a 2 grand discount out of the profit, as the scrappage allowance from the government is only one thousand. if I were you, and the car doesn't sell, I would just tell them that. you scrap the mini, no deal!Anyway what will happen to the deal if you sell the car? Will just put the sale money towards the purchase price?Fred

Now I am thinking about it, I am not too sure what the seller wants to do. It looks like he has struck a deal, yet has put the car on ebay.

Think I'll go for that, BIN £25k, I'm really convinced I've got all the information I need from that listing to make an informed decision

Um, I'm selling one of those in that colour with less than 20,000 miles on for £19,995. It's on my website. Doesn't have a private plate, but it's a shit load tidier than that.

This is the one I'm selling.

I like that Marina! Not sure what the crack is with that Royal Nail van, I think there's at least 3 in that livery doing the rounds, certainly that isn't the magazine featured one (Which may have been built by some lad I got a load of mags off once, and which I turned down even when v.cheap. DOH. It had a 2.9v6 mit 4wd)

 Whoops - didn't click on that side - still, i'd roll it for £150 with an old boy repair slapped on there. Class.

regarding that horrific abomination of a 106, it always strikes me as hilarious when a seller has to resort to putting pictures of a grubby seat up. Obviously one of the very few good points. That 600 has quite a bit of rust for an MOT passer, i can only assume said area has been knocked quite hard making the 'metal' fall away. The Mk 5/6 escort also suffers from rust around the arches. The one which our college had literally was knocked lightly on the arch and it just crumbled  Even more confusing was the fact it wasnt even showing itself through the paintwork before hand, and no spray bodge either.

I can't even look at the Rover arch-crust. My BMW has developed a really big bubble on one of the rear arches and I am terrified of prodding it in case that is the outcome. :(

theres a Mercedes Benz e class owned by a teacher at my college which has really bad rust on the front wheel arch, any knocks would make the front half disintegrate

But back to ebay

with Private Number Plate DKE17T - D KEnT

It makes me think of dyke personally.

Hilarious tracking issues

No steering output whatsoever on the wheels.

Nice orange tinged floor, that'll be fun.

At some point I need to drive a TR7, if only to find out if they really are the miserable experience I expect them to be.

the seller for the TR7 says its been sat for a year, but i dunno, looks longer to me.

Lovely Small American Hatch Back

Of all the words to describe a geo storm, lovely is right up there with desirable.

These always seemed really similar to the Volvo 480
