Dave wants a 4x4.

I recommend a disco 2. They're cheap and fixable.

I've had one and it was good. I've also had an L200 and currently have several series LRs and a land cruiser which will be for sale but has had some electric shock treatment.

I looked at a few ford rangers last year and will almost certainly be trying one out at some point soon.

Navaras aren't much fun

I had one briefly, suspension too hard.

Unladen driving is very tiring due to all the bouncing

Buy a Shogun, this is the answer to most questions. Yes its thirsty but it just doesn't go wrong, I've saved a fortune on repair bills whilst doing 24mpg on a run and 18 or so towing but its worth it

I know it's not a pick up or a 3 Dr, but no one has mentioned the WJ Jeep Grand Cherokee.

I love mine and just thank god I got one with LPG as 4.0 is about 16 to the gallon around the houses, more on a run.

We sold a very nice Pajero/Shogun where I used to work.Always a very well looked after vehicle and with low mileage.Whenever I see the man it got sold to he tells me about a new bill he's had to pay.Whereas 3.0 D4D Land Cruisers go for years without needing anything other than servicing.

A Land Cruiser is on my wish list

A bit pricy, although I suppose you get what you pay for

Lexus rx300?

We've had one for 3 yrs and 40k miles and it's been great but it does like a drink (23mpg ish) but other than it's cost v little to run and has never suffered an ftp - no doubt they'll now be a significant ftp

This has quarter of a million miles on it. It also has 30 stamps in service book. Probably 2nd class postage stamps but better than nothing.

The seller also has a Dave numbers user name

A friend of fatha somewhatfoolish has one of these for sale in reasonable nick, albeit with some ghastly chrome/stainless steel tat bolted on; I think it has a tool chest bolted to the load bed though, which would be more useful. I could enquire a price and take some pics if of interest?

RXs don't have 4 wheel drive capability or the ground clearance to be useful in Daves job but are pretty good in most other ways.

Isuzu TF or one of its many derivatives would be a good call, the issue being that they generally get sold for export, I had 2 exporters competing to buy my accident damaged Brava and you rarely see them for sale any more as they are all having M2 Browning bolted to the load area.

Short time remaining on this one on Ebay, got a few panel dents so it looks like no one wants it. It also has the obligatory bonnet edge rust rubble, it's the only place mine was rusting when I got rid of mine (Y Plate) 4 years ago.

The mystery pickup that was posted earlier is TF based if you look at the shape of the body from the front wings back.

The land lord of the local pub is selling his Hyundai Santa Fe, would that be anywhere near spec?

I know where there is a nice Audi allroad for sale which is 4 wheel drive, and very good at it it is too.

Chop the back off and make it into a pickup.

I have been looking at Delicas but it seems like pot luck on condition. Poor MPG isnt toooooo much of an issue, but I think these are beyond poor and into terrible.

I have been looking at Great Walls too....I am no bufty, but I really do like the look of this metallic pink one.

GreatWall = LandWind links. Essentially a ripped-off/licensed then "DENY IT JESUS CHRIST PR DISASTER!" Frontera/Isuzu. At gunpoint, maybe. At least the Musso/Ssangyongs were genuinely the result of a Mercedes technology-sharing deal, the original Musso/GX220 was a great thing let down by inept, rural, pennypinching/see you coming dealers.

Delica L400s are not as bad on fuel as you might think comparably. I used to get 28mpg average from mine and I drove at 85 regularly - 2800TD auto LWB low-roof (no crystalite). However, they DO go wrong, diesel pumps, stretchy chains, rusty chassis members (not actual chassis on L400), cracked bump stop contact areas. Fantastic cars when they're working and bought patiently and wisely. Getting to the age where shit breaks and is expensive like dual-A/C systems which of course, involve coolant pipes meandering under the car.

FWIW Discovery 1/2 are not fetching insane money, are easy to fix and don't hide their rust particularly well - easy to buy on sight/condition.

XK Cherokee - only bother in 4.0, springs sag, they rust, they can be bad on fuel but aren't actually BAD - they do, however, have a very small driving area. 4x4 aspirations, Escort Mk 3 estate dimensions. I love them for precisely that reason. Numbers are thinning and most have grotty LPG conversions and are going miserably wrong. Grand Cherokee becomes tempting, but transfer cases made of cheese on 2000-2001 models.

Rangers seem to be the cheap-pickup-hack of choice but most I've looked at have HGF now.

Possibly have a spare Frontera in need of a clutch slave cylinder. 2.8 flavour

Ok, stand down everyone....A commitment has been made.

Its not fantastically interesting Autoshite material, but I will blog it anyway and write it up when I get home. Up to you if you read it or not.

How does London work? I need to get from Victoria to Euston.

How does a country bumpkin use the tube? how do you pay? buy a single ticket or what? Im frightened.

Posted

There's a machine. You push buttons.

Or if you've got a contactless card, just tap the oyster thingy, but remember to tap out when done.

Posted

Victoria to Euston is an hours walk if you don't fancy the tube. Otherwise you can buy a ticket or you can use Apple Pay instead of the contactless card.

When I was looking for a 4x4 the Kia Sedona caught my eye, a proper 4x4 with either a petrol V6 or diesel 4 cylinder. Apart from rust on the rear axle bracket (Kia recall) they seem alright

Vic-Euston is a short hop of a few stops on the northbound Victoria line, you can buy singles on the ticket machines. TfL destaffed all the ticket windows though so you'll have to find an attendant on the ticket office floor if you need help. Everything is nicely signed too. You can just tap a contactless card on the yellow reader on the gates alternatively, that lets you in and out, and it charges you at the end of the day. IIRC contactless is cheaper too.

Oh aye, that Range Rover would look grand with a strimmer across the back seat and a chainsaw in the footwell leaking bar oil into the shag-pile as I drive it through bramble bushes the height of the door handles.

I want that 203, but not for the ridiculous coin he's asking.

Is there a scene tax on old Pooshows in Portugal?

Vehicles in Portugal (10 million peeps and av income 846 euro a month)  are generally expensive with a mossive tax if you want to import a secondhand motor so normal peeps have and use older cars (AX, ZX, 106 etc) then the UK. Salt is reserved to adorn friets and not to rot cars. Cars older then "useful" are usually not cherished and restored but often just left somewhere as there is not a market for them and random bits get recycled.  Any complete ones older then the "left somewhere" phase pop up in vary used original condition with random pricing (hoping for some foreign buyer). There is no obvious place to flog/buy this stuff,  E*** was banned from Portugal. Flash Harry UK bloke up the road tried to start a Renault 4 car sales room a couple of years ago as he could buy them cheap and ponce them up but people here with little money don't buy bling. The 203 says  Negociável    so sling in a message and see how it goes, though i expect you have already done that.
