Not sure DW, I'll take a look this evening to see if it does.  The budget tyres probably aren't helping, but my guess is front shocks are well past their best.

The service book is stamped up to 2003 and 128,000 miles, so lord knows what's happened to it since then.  The first owner seems to have been that purveyor of shit furniture...

Part of me would love one of these, but I don't know if I could stand the tension.

I'll run it for a few months as a sort of PDI, then you can have it mega cheap!

That might be the only way I'd be brave enough to try one!

Has it got a Daimler grille fitted? If so, this will need rectifying.

Well spotted, yes.  But changing it would be non-essential expenditure so it's staying!

Simple, Buy cheap Jag grille and sell Daimler grille for MASSIVE PROFIT QUIDS IN M9

Also, your signature needs updating to show off how you are better than everyone else. Period.

I keep coming back to this to see if you've decided to sell it yet.

Well done Rob, I don't think I've seen one in that colour before, looks sharp.  Got to be better than the last cheap Jag you bought, surely?  I shall be completely uninterested when you come to sell it, incidentally.

Yes but should he boast it is a Daimler or own up it is just a Jaguar!

Thanks Phil. I did view this before buying it, so not quite a balls of steel blind purchase. Yet despite knowing the issues I still bought it! If it was a keeper I'd get the ride sorted out, as that's pretty much the point of these waftaloons isn't it.

Well, just make sure you sort the ride before you sell it.  Just saying, you know, in case someone else is interested in it.

I have never owned a XJ40 either!

I can highly recommend them, they're great, when they're not kicking you in the head and stealing your wallet.

Well done Rob, hopefully this one will treat you better than Dolly's one did him.

It certainly is a lovely looking thing. Colour and wheel combo did for me when browsing eBay...

Two spoke steering wheel win. Much better than the gopping airbag effort.

Fist sized hole in the boot floor. Needs welding/wobbing.

Well this thread turned in a most unexpected but welcome direction. Such a square jawed and handsome beast!

This is the same 3.2 litre Sovereign model as mine, in a very similar colour combo and registered almost on the same day - but yours is one of the last of the earlier battery under the bonnet versions, whereas mine is one of the first battery in boot types. Your version is a bit less rust prone than mine. They're both pretty rare - the Sov 3.2 was one of the least common versions of the XJ40. Unfortunately rare doesn't make it more desirable though!

Incidentally, yours is the 291st from last battery under bonnet car made (last one was 667827) - but the engine number is only a couple of hundred before mine. I suspect it went down the line on the same day, just a few hours earlier!

Someone has spent a good deal of money on it in the relatively recent past. Those headlights look to be in excellent condition - fairly new even. They're VERY expensive (well over £200 each new) and since the Fishtanks are prone to the reflectors rusting, good ones are rare second hand - which is one of the main reasons why people fit the quad type round headlights. Even second hand in good condition like this they're worth a good bit of money, so a useful 'insurance' against anything mechanically tragic befalling the old thing...

The windscreen wiper is parked on the wrong side - and most probably will misbehave when you use it. This, whilst not common, isn't rare and is nearly always a blown inline fuse in the wiper park circuit.. Junkman's Sov had the same problem.  If you remove the passenger's side cover under the dash (the big one under the glove box where you knees are) you will find an inline fuse (iirc 7.5 amp). This will have blown. Replace it and your wiper will behave itself.

The fuse fail message will tell you which fuse it is - if you have the handbook! I think Junkman or Mr Conelrad may have one so may be able to look it up. My car's electrical are different, so the fuse number may not be correct. I'm not sure that the wiper park fuse will actually trigger the message - it may be too much of an afterthought (added to prevent the wiper being damaged when frozen on to the screen in very cold climates)

The old '40 should ride well - better than your X300 Sport did. Yours may or may not have the Citroen inspired self levelling suspension. Not all cars came with it new, and of those that did, most cars had the rear springs replaced with the conventional type a long time ago - mostly under warranty. It can be very troublesome with problems centring on the height level 'switch' sensors on the rear suspension. I would be amazed if your car still has them at this mileage - absolutely astounded!

I guess it could be a number of things: worn bushes, shocks, tyres out of round if the car has sat a long time? The prop could be out of balance?

That hole in the boot floor will be down to the tow loop attachment/tie down loop welded to the floor side by the  right hand exhaust back box. They rust on the weld and I imagine it along with surrounding metal will have dropped out at some point!

The non airbag wheel is a lot better than the plastic monstrosity my car is lumbered with!

Stick the little round Growler grille badge on it like they use in the USA - and say it's a Vanden Plas!

Thanks for the information MR, that's really useful. I've got a Fuse 1 fail message, so will check that out tomorrow and see if I can get my wiper to park properly.

I took it out this evening to do the weekly food shop, and it felt very decadent using it for such a mundane task! Top deck of the car park was busy as usual...

post-5013-0-41821400-1499470328_thumb.jpeg

It drives better than my X300 did with half the amount of miles. The engine in this feels more eager, despite it having an exhaust blow, and the underneath is less rusty too. So it's clearly been looked after in the past, although it's probably been a bit neglected in the last couple of years (hence why the issues have stacked up).

I'm off to Reims next weekend, and I'm tempted to book this on le shuttle for next Friday. But once this bottle of Côtes du Rhône wears off I'll probably see sense and take the trusty Astra dizzler instead!

This looks brilliant & reminds me I NEED another Jag.

If memory serves, Fuse1 is a blown fuse in the fusebox located in the LH footwell. Fuse2 is the RH footwell & Fuse3 is the armrest.

Gave this a proper look over today. Yes it's shabby, but it could also be a lot worse.

Engine bay may be grubby but it runs really well and starts instantly, so I just checked the fluids, tightened up a few jubilees and left well alone so as not to bugger it up.

It has the self levelling suspension, and I assume the sphere in shot is the accumulator. So perhaps this is causing the ride issue and not knackered shocks, as it has a bounciness akin to a Citroen with a tired set of spheres.

Steering gaitor fail. At the very least I'll get that fixed, probably...the lock on this is shit BTW, which is annoying for such a boat sized car. The X300 one was better.

Badges have fallen off at some point.

Grubby kick plate and surround pretty much sums this car up!

Shame no picnic tables...rear seats are near mintola though.

It scrubbed up well after a quick wash. It looks too high at the back though, so perhaps the self levelling is borked.

What kind of buzz is it?

A constant annoying one, which gave up after a while but was replaced by the ABS light.

Just had to do the XJ40 thing before all the cheap ones disappear.

Excellent.  This is where I was at last year, what with all the covereage in magazines (especially Dollywobbler's excellent tome),

and purchased this blind on the 'bay

Cazana reckons yours is worth a splendid 594 of the Queen's Pounds!  A bargainous bouncy barge with knacked sphereage and theyalldothatsire leaks from somewhere steering related, one that you could part-out for plenty more if it does a Renault.

The first thing I was advised to do was re-seat all the fuses one by one.  That worked, and for the whole year it was pretty-much trouble-free, re-seating/replacing the odd relay cured most snags.  Polished the life out of it and sold it on with a good tickle too. This Daimler was today's equivalent of £78k new!  It's a shame the build quality is so similar to a Fiat in places.

A bit of rust converter and some glue on that wood would start tidying it up.

I keep reading the PLP number plate as parliamentary Labour party, i.e. two Jag Prescott!

I'll do that, thanks. I did replace one fuse yesterday which solved the fuse fail message, so I now have Power Wash ability.

Based on that valuation I'm quids in then by the tune of £44. I'm sure that'll soon evaporate!

Your under-bonnet sphere is for the braking system, acting as an accumulator for that. Bosch as I recall, but clearly influenced by a certain French manufacturer...

Posted

Thanks DW, I did wonder if it was brake related, and I've just googled the hydraulic system and the accumulator appears to be buried deep down somewhere else.
