CX pseudo "cobra head" shift. And no marks showing what position it's in:

Double Mercedes content.

It's really wank, but I love the emblem embedded in the top of the shifter.

This is actually where the thing ought to be.  With modern technology it could be anywhere in the car - so let's have it literally at your fingertips.

Both cars have pointless flappy paddles.

Behold my shiny knob.

Stock photo so not my actual car, my RX is the same just with a fine layer of filth and 300 Aldi car park tickets scattered added

The natural place for an automatic gearbox selector lever is on the steering column.

Do you not have gear position lights on the dash?

This is my S1, but I thought S2 had position lights as well?

Took a bit of head scratching and fiddling with the mouse thing until I spotted the gear selector in one of these the first time I drove it.post-17414-0-44620200-1541404504_thumb.jpeg

To my knowledge the only car to copy the Mopars of the 50's and 60's

Although, no doubt someone knows better...

The Leyland P76 had provisions for left hand drive mounting, on a car that was right hand drive only.

The same T-bar featured on the Aussie spec Marina.

Well there was Bristol, but it's probably the same box.

Indeed it does, in a slightly unusual place because avantgarde design*.....

My word, that's a lot of buttons.

Yes, and I only remember using the gearbox sports mode button and seat heater dial.

Oh yeah for extra points, the gear lever had an orange "mood light" ring in it.

I actually miss that car, it was comfy and went like a bastard.

I cannot possibly imagine how slow that car is. The one I had with the same engine and five speed manual, you had to seriously wring it out. I had to drop two cogs to get up the hill on the M77 heading out of Glasgow at 55.

Also, the road tax for mine was £30, the auto with same engine is £190.

We've had this already, but the image link is dead and it's my all-time favourite - the BMC landcrab.

At the other end of that control is a Borg Warner 35 'box.

Has anyone ever driven an automatic with the +\- ‘manual’ mode and it not been utterly dreadful?

Flappy paddles in my old Saab worked well for hoonage. Pretty instant change & meant I could make it hold gears correctly for corners.

Because you need your gears to be in the order NDLR instead of PRNDL for added joviality.

Drove a 2005 Transit automatic a few years ago, it was horrid.

Check out the "shifter"

The correct style of autobox shifter. J-gates are so natural to use I've no idea why other makes persist with inferior layouts.632b700c48bbbb57e2cc1e964085a764.jpg
