I don't know if it's a sign of getting older but I also appreciate a quieter exhaust most of the time. A bit of a V8 burble in the background is nice but at motorway speeds I prefer the engine to be silent and the stereo to be good.

Excellent work, I look forward to your fleet expanding exponentially now you have a trailer to drag dead stuff home with🤣

On the Jag have the back boxes been chopped off so the exhaust is exiting under the floor? If so even a straight pipe to the rear of the car will make a big difference noise wise.

I think its very much the case of been there, done that. In the case of the Jag the drone is unbearable though, it drowns out any burble there might be above idle. I might deploy the fix @HMC had done in the same situation and slap some extra pipe on it.

Checking the bookpack that came with the car, turns out the first owner lived in Ayr. That might explain the less than ideal MOT history filled to the brim with corrosion advisories and fails (not like there are that many XJs that wouldn't look the same underneath). No Jag to be found at the address but check out this dude's drive down the road!

His and her's Porsches and a Stinger GT as daily, very nice! Mentioning Kia Stingers, they should get pretty cheap relatively soon as well...

The dealer (Inglis of Ayr) who sold the Jag back in 2000 seems long gone as well.

Not much service history either, it racked up the miles very quickly in the first couple of years judging by the service book. No receipts other than brake pads and filters, plus a few expired McDonalds vouchers. Can't win them all!

cant ever remember a jag dealer in ayr apart from parks and that's my territory, unless it was doonfoot.. aye the air in ayr is salty being on the coast

what would happen in the last pic if you got them all warm then bounced them off the limiter together :D

I remember Inglis, I think I know where they used to be but the internet isn't helping. Have asked a friend who might remember.

It's probably safe to say it didn't spend that long in Ayrshire if it's still alive, that area kills cars with salt water and rust.

I can also make a pretty good guess as to where that house is, down the south end of Ayr/Alloway by any chance?

HOWEVER, this was not the only car I agreed to buy while away. As many know I'm seemingly absorbing the entire market for bottom dollar luxo barges in the forum atm so it was only the right thing for Scaryoldcortina to ask me whether I was interested in this Jaguar XJ8 he got offered as a trade for his junk LS400:

Would that have been my old Mk3 LS400? If so presumably it's on its way to the oval?

Thats correct, good eye! According to the address the dealer was along this row of shops, presumambly where the Sports Direct is now?

I think so yes. The car was bought as engine donor, its been sitting for so long (and needed suspension bushes) that it's probably the best use for it now. I'd assume that the buyer will sell the shell to a banger racer eventually. Bit of a shame really!

Quick update on the Audi A8: Since the electronics going mental make driving the car a bit of a challenge I set about to find out what the issue might be. I quickly ruled out the battery and alternator so it was clear that a power supply control module or poor earth point/short would be the culprit for randomly limiting the voltage sent to all kinds of systems in the car. I've had a look underneath the driver side carpet today since I knew water ingress must have been an issue in the past.

Well, lets just say my intial suspicions were quickly confirmed, water made its way underneath the carpet on the driver side (the passenge side is dry, thank god) and drowned this control module, which happens to be one of the modules responsible for supplying various systems with power...

I dried it all with towels and my heat gun and most electrical issues seems to be gone already. The module, which is also responsible for opening the MMI screen, is dead however despite my best efforts to clean it. Good thing you can get them for 15 quid posted straight to you!

It should arrive towards the end of the week. If this is all it needs to resolve most of the electrical issues in the A8 then its even more of a steal than I initially thought! There's still an airbag light on the dash and I'd be surprised if there aren't more hidden issue lurking somewhere but its a good start, and cost me next to nothing.

@Schaefft Yes, that's exactly where I thought it was!

I grew up about 40 miles south of Ayr and a trip there was a big day out for me as a young lad😳

One of the highlights was driving past that dealers on our way into town.

And yes, I know the area where the car lived well, as that took you down to the A719 coast road which was a favourite of mine back in the day when I'd passed my test👌

I always remember a MK4 Escort rally car used to sit outside a house around there. Crazy how these things stick in the mind.

You may already know this Schaefft, but the drains below the cabin filter can get blocked, leading to all sorts of water ingress... Mine came in via the blower, windscreen wouldn't clear in the end.

They're wee rubber drains, accessible from underneath, either side of the gearbox.  Bit of a reach up to them (I used a welding rod I think), but makes a big difference.  I chuck a kettle full of boiling water down the side of the cabin filter/blower motor assembly every now and again now to makes sure they stay clear.

I believe there are Aircon drains either side of the transmission tunnel that can get blocked too, carpet needs to be lifted I think...

Great fault finding and improving as always, well done that man 👍

I've done both the cowl drains and AC evaporator drains on my D2 S8 but it seems like it's mainly the latter that are a problem on the D3? At least there doesn't seem to be any standing water in the areas underneath the plastic covers of the engine bay.

Would this be it, circa 1999 on Google Earth?

Yes, I think that could be it! Where do you find satellite images from that far back?

Google Earth has a web-based version now. For most of the UK it seems to go back as far as 1999, although in some places not as much detail.

My mate is on the case, he was in various dealerships in Ayr around that time.

He doesn't remember Jaguar being at that location though

@Schaefftis it the original bill of sale from that address under Inglis Jaguar? It wasn't part exd for a Saab or Merc was it?

Sorry/not sorry for the thread hijack 🤣

I am just happy to not be the only one looking up old dealers like this.

Here's the stamp with the address, sold in January 2000.

Thats what i learned when i did mine. Good catch. Were the carpets wet or was it just underneath?

Looking closer I reckon that's the bit Dome highlighted based off postcode and building numbers.

that garage was previously south west saab owned by rally driver neale dougan, if you look on street view its now a kitchen showroom . the former burns statue garage volvo is now a indian buffet place

There was standing water underneath the carpet, partially submerging the control module there.

The replacement module arrived today and fortunately fixed the electrical issues for good, the MMI screen once again rises!

Unfortunately taking it through a test drive through the field quickly revealed the original reason the car must have been taken off the road for.

IMG_20260114_123106.jpg.3aace63122f030a011530d77f0b87ee1.jpg

We can ignore the code for the steering angle sensor (always triggers after disconnecting the battery). 00301 however us a code for an issue with the ABS pump (ABS return flow pump to be specific, which is the ABS pump). While its easily accessible it also happens to be quite expensive. The part number for my pump/module assembly is 0265950061, which is for the early V8 A8 D3s as far as I can tell (so 3.7, 4.2 and 4.0TDI). There's only a single one for sale on ebay right now which is 350 quid. It could be worse but considering the car will need a few other smaller niggles sorted I'm not sure if thats going to pay off in the end. I can't see another non-V6 diesel A8 getting broken for parts either that could donate its pump. It also seems like I managed to mess up the module coding somehow so its now permanently showing a control module defective code (forunately the pump and module come as pair).

The original reason for the purchase of the A8 was as a parts car, if I can't find a replacement pump for cheap that might be its fate after all...

Only the 2nd link would offer the right service. I'll see what prices I get from people in germany breaking these, otherwise a repair might be the best way forward. Although thats not going to be any cheaper than the 350 quid for a replacement.

yes sorry about that was a quick search only ... 😊

The only thing I'd add is the £350 is used (?) where as if you spend same on a repair you have some sort of guarantee etc ...

It's an option but it wouldn't be the first time I'm sending in a module only to be told "sorry we actually can't fix it after all". The warranty is good to have but usually only a year or so.

I've decided to move on to the next troublesome diesel today in form of the forum bike X-Type. It's quickly turning into quite the problem child.

IMG_20260115_172244.jpg.63d7a3af42f15f405cfbcc951a7c5c7e.jpg

Originally I thought it only popped a boost hose after booting it as it's sluggish to say the least (and I'm fairly sure I heard something along a sudden air leak when it lost power). It's pouring out a ton of white (unburnt diesel) smoke. I've had a look today and can't find any of the boost hoses to/from the intercooler loose or ruptured. I felt around all of them and all seems good. Is there anywhere else I should check for leaks that would result in no boost and a reluctance to rev? No codes stored in the ECU.IMG_20260115_172335.jpg.899311c787561a533b15664197c37ca4.jpg

Smoke out of the dispstick tube can't be good either! It sure does a great job at being a smoke machine.

Do these have a pcv system?

I would assume so yeah. The PCV valve might be gummed up but I don't think that'll cause the lack of power. I'd assume the dipstick would become a projectile before that's causing the engine to lack that much power😅

Id be checking the turbo has not self destructed if its smoking like a trooper.
