MPG shite

We have 3 cars......

2006 jag S type 2.7d 40mpg

1998 Mgf 1.8 40mpg

2015 abarth 595 1.4T 40mpg.

Mpg has no impact on us.

I just drive other peoples cars as much as possible.

Best way to ensure good MPG - leave my car on the driveway.

I think my TD ZX did 280 odd miles to £22ish of diesel yesterday, mainly motorway driving. Not bad really. Also not bad given how many hills/narrow country lanes and stop/starting on the A303 there was.

But apparently my new secondment at work covers fuel costs, hence me getting a larger, petrol engined automatic....

My P6 V8s are decidedly frugal with the old pez.

55 litres last for a full 250 odd miles!

Unless your sump holds 10+ litres of oil or you are just doing continual motorway work 20k miles between services is only going to cause early engine failure.

Have some oil analysis done every 5k miles to see how it's breaking down.

Who does these in the UK?

Posted

I've managed as much as 750 miles from a tank (with a bit left over) and not hanging about too much, and as little as 350 miles on the autobahn, really not hanging around.

When the tank is 110 litres even the best of these isn't great but the worst is terrible.

My old goona2 was an 18k schedule.

Obviously you'd change the engine before the oil in most cases, but that was the theory

I get 600 miles out of about 36 litres. Crazy to think that if I took it easy every day I could stretch that out to well over 900 miles.

Sorry I should have been more specific, I meant who does the oil analysis?

I get about 20-23mpg out of the truck driving it gently (never really gets above 1500 rpm, high gearing). This is considered acceptable.

*Considering if you plant the throttle, it'll drop the mpg meter to 1-2 mpg and keep it there quite easily...

I've found the best way of getting decent mpg out of any of my cars is to leave it at home and get the bus or train.......

On the moderns the 'big' Kia hybrid does about 58mpg in normal use, the 'little' FIAT does about 37mpg because it does mainly short journeys (and it's underpowered with an emission strangled engine).

The DS was doing about 28mpg just before it broke*. I have no idea what the big Austin does as petrol was about 5 groats a gallon last time it was on the road.

Actually I don't worry about mpg at all, I just find filling cars with fuel a hugely boring waste of time. What's great is the the Kia does over 500 miles on £40 to £42 worth before it asks for more.

Oh sorry.

Dunno, but I know some trucking companies get it done.

The lowest I can get mine to go is 12mpg when I'm doing 0-fast in as few seconds as possible.

So funny that people own 3.0 and above engines so drive at 50/60 to save fuel.

Honestly, what is the point?

Better MPG is easier if you get a car that can do reasonable mpg in the first place!!!

I bought a cheap Leon for that very reason and even on 4speed at the moment (as I broke 5 th) it STILL averages 45/47, best I had was 54 so not a massive amount in $$$ for the heartache of driving below 70 on the motorway.

I try to stick to 80 plus or minus 5 mph for hills up and down.

Mines an early non pd, no ideas what the 6spd PDS are like but everyone I know gets at least high 50's/60's.

Our 6 speed PD gets low to mid 50s average, high 50s on a run and will touch 60 if really careful. It is a Tournament though so has the aerodynamics of a brick, and is often full of absolute shite like camping gear

My 5spd pre-PD Leon was alright, although it was my first turbo diesel so I drove it everywhere in "hoon" mode. Probably got mid 40s average.

Stag 3.0 V8 on strommies will do 30mpg on a motorway run at a nice steady 70mph. being a hooligan on a run will see over 26mpg. round town no idea

Range Rover on the other hand running on LPG. middle and outside lane Motorway driving 60litres of LPG should see 200miles (15.#mpg), round town it is nearer 160miles (12.#mpg) Average typically 13.somethingMpg.

I have to venture into some serious truck bothering to get anything more

I just keep the tyres at the right pressure, service them and drive em

Best I ever managed with our rangie was 19mpg on LPG on a long clear run into Cornwall.

3.5 carb'd V8 and 4 speed, should in theory be better now as it's got OD and high compression 10 bolt heads but it's been retired from long distance services.

Had a Schuler Super Ranger with special auto box that never bettered 14mpg on LPG, I've never driven a nicer handling RRC though.

305 van. 470 miles, 9 gallons = 52mpg. 90% motorway doing 85mph. At 70 get 63mpg. Not bad for a 70s designed chodlette. That's french for any old, erm , french chariot and is the female form coz all french cars are like them wimmins and only let you do certain things when they want you to, not when they should. E.g. work properly n stuff.

This is hauling nearly 2.5 tonnes from a standstill to 60 in a little over 7 seconds though. Also, consider first gear is high enough ratio to bring you to 45 at about 5500 rpm... Second gets you to 65 and there's three more ratios left after that*.

It's a heavy lump but it'll shift if it needs to.

I don't know the actual MPG figure but my jalopy Fiesta 1.3, for what it is, is shit on fuel. I think it's slightly worse than my old 16v, 1600 Escort.

Probably because it's so slow I have to floor it everywhere just to get it moving. It's not so bad when moving and will pull 90 on a private test track without drama, but slotting into an "ambitious" round about space can be butt clenching......

Chuckle. All my cars/bikes are also female for the same reason.

Add a few years of neglect in & it explains why my Bonnie is called 'Stroppy old tart', looks great but it's all on her terms.

Probably dividing miles driven by gallons of fuel used?

I am retired, I don't really go anywhere but somehow have managed to clock up 13,000 miles between MOTs in the Land Rover it does less than 20mpg so that is about four grand in fuel. I did have the C15 van for a few months at the beginning of the year to do the rubbish shifting for my sister, that was doing about 50mpg, so I could do three trips to West Wales in that for one in the Land Rover. I stupidly replaced the C15 van with a C15 camper I think that still does about 50mpg, it's difficult to tell as I never get to drive it as it spends most of its time being mended.

Something's gone RONG because there's no way a 305 diesel van is that fuel efficient.

I did a round trip a couple of weeks ago from Duddle of ay to Rice of Lip then Pit of Wool in Sufferoakshire and then a bit more local until i got back down to the half full mark which I started off with. I put £25 in when I left and a further £25 during the mission. Which makes a total of 42 litres at the price I was paying. The odd meter reliably informed me, as reliably as a 30 year old odd meter can, that I had progressed the distance of 800 meters of the kilo, which as far as I can work out is 470 of your Imperialistic miles, and 42 litres, of the proletariat measure, equals 9.2 of your imperialist gallons.

O.k. Its actually 51.0869565 mpg. So I was exaggerating. I have had 48 urban, but it was boring, and 64 on a run, also boring at 65 on a M/way. Much more fun in the fast lane with Aldi's etc, doing 90 in a 30 year old van. I mean, come on, who wouldn't ? Ay ?

I'm sure I will be corrected on my calculations. Bloody pedants ! I would fart on their leg, if I was close enough !  And coz i'm on medicstation for a stomach disability my farts at the moment are huge and loud. although very low on the Richter scale of smell, which is disappointing.

P.s. Its a xantia engine, to be pedantic, if that makes any difference.
