Second Car - I would like a 75.

Afternoon all.

In a few months time I'll be looking at buying a second car. I have always had a soft spot for the Rover 75. Ideally I'd like a V6 petrol version (is there such a thing) ? What I'd really like is a tourer!!!!!

In reality, what are the 75's like to live with ? Which is the best engine to go for ?

Thanks all.

Eminent Rover 75 enthusiast ESSDEEWON is your man.

I've had 3x 75s, and the v6's are the correct engine for the car.

They require a little bit of tinkering and looking after, but most of us enjoy that in a car - it certainly makes ownership more rewarding.  The v6 in 2.5 180 tune is a thing of pure joy; a glorious companion of sonic perfection.

Enough prose and praise, go and drive a few.  Just find a good one where the VIS motors give you a healthy shove at 3,000 rpm.  Otherwise it'll feel as flat as a Witch's titty.

Diesel Tourer Auto.

Manual Boxs can be costly for the clutches and the auto's just seem to run and run.

Diesel's can be easily reflashed to 160 bhp (both the 115 CDT and the 135 CDTi), I think you might also be able to add a Rover Ron box on top to get 180bhp but not sure.

Really love mine

Can I get a V6 Petrol version ?

I'm thinking in case tax absolutely sky rockets due to upcoming possible regulation about banning diesels....

I wouldnt mind an Auto if im truthful. An auto Petrol V6 Tourer would be nice.

What are they like to run (not that im that bothered) ? Good on fuel ?

Fell in love with the 75's when I worked at Reg Vardy Rover years ago.

A v6 auto is the least popular with "peoples" - so I'd say they're the best bet.

I could, easily, get 35 mpg on the M1 in my 2.5 auto - mid 20s around the doors - my combined was always about 33.  Very agreeable.

Now that's pretty much the golden rule of this place! Having owned a diesel manual, V6 auto seems a much better idea. Far more suited to the ambience.

Keep your eye on the Rover 75 forum, some bargains can crop up there.

Also if V6 is your bag, see if belts have been done recently as think its a ball ache of a job.

My S Type was a V6, loved the power and the sheer easability of its drive... A because it was a big engine and B it was an Auto.

I think Auto in the second car would be ideal, the wife would probably enjoy it too.

NB: Belts is something I always religiously check anyway. :)

Doesn't necessarily have to be a V6, but something big would be nice. And Petrol. But must be Auto.

I'll keep my peepers on the 75 forums.....

Thanks

Another forum favourite, and rightly so, is the Jaguar X300. Now's very much the time to buy.

Been there - well I had the S Type. Lovely car probs the best I've had so far but drunk fuel like it was the last car on the planet... not that I complained.... Smiles per Mile.

However, now isn't the time for me to own a 3.0 V6 again, though a mate of mine has offered me his for dirt cheap. It wouldn't be practical for the missus when she wants to use the Auto.

I did a bit of research before I bought mine.

V6 petrol sounds best and goes well.

Can be problems with thermostat leak/head, or whatever.

Clutch is expensive if it fails, may need DMF, difficult access to master cyl, slave cyl prone to failure and is inside bellhousing.

I prefered a Tourer, so decided, Diesel, auto, tourer, to avoid some of the problems.

Bought Diesel manual tourer because its nice and was the right price.

There are many about at around £700, much less if you buy one with problems.

To me its a throwaway car, if its costs a lot to fix I'll buy another. They are nice.

Classic insurance is available at Peter Best.

If you get a Tourer check the Stays on the rear door, mine have just ripped out at the body end. "They all do that sir".

Forum is free to join, but £10 if you need a full membership number for classic ins.

I find them a bit stuck up, they let you know when they have washed it etc.

EDIT be careful with the tax band, not sure which model, but some are very expensive.

Engine-wise, the 75 came in 1.8 NASP and 1.8 Turbo. V6-wise were 2.0 and 2.5, both made a nice noise but the 2.5 was more preferable, bigger engine pulling a car around the same weight as a 2.0 75 but using less fuel. There are the Diesel options too, 2.0 BMW engine not a bad engine as I recall.

Never had a 75 myself, though have many Rover 800s. I've got a Sterling with the KV6 engine which is still happily running despite a rotted radiator and dead battery. Still makes a nice noise.

Careful of the KV6 engine, they have no less than 3 cambelts and are a MASSIVE chore to do. You need a special cam-locking tool in order to do the job correctly.

Avoid manual 75s. Clutches are expensive and a chore to do.

Nothing constructive to add over what's been said but these are mine....post-4673-0-40102200-1494006675_thumb.jpg

I suppose it's worth saying it's one of those cars where the difference between a semi fucked one and the best presently isn't much £ so save yourself hassle and get a good one. Of course, I didn't follow my own advice but where's the fun in that?

Oy, back of the queue behind me!  You've just described my ideal spec.  Having said that, there's way more chance of you finding the money than of me doing that, so leapfrog will doubtless ensue.  Just remember to Roffle it here when you've done, that's how I wound up with two manual saloons (a 2.5 ZT and a 2.0 75)!

After those experiences, I can definitely say auto is the way to go (not that I'd have said otherwise before).  If economy matters, buy the diesel, because the V6s just don't know the word, but oh boy, on all the other fronts they win hands down.

If you can find a halfway decent V6 auto Tourer, I can't see you doing anything other than fall in love.

Mine are both V6 2.5 petrol...

Not much to add to what has aready been said though. Generally very reliable engines if PROPERLY looked after, although check the rear suspension and springs, as they can rust badly. Although many are either fine or repaired.

The MG ZT has had both rear upper arms, bushes and springs replaced recently, as one of the arms and a spring succumbed to rust.

Cooling system needs the OAT coolant and bleeding carefully, the plastic thermostat housings tend to leak with age but unlikely to fail dramatically unless ignored.

Generally body rust is not an issue. Both of mine have none visible.

Thanks for the advice all, So looks like im going to go for the... V8 Mustang version ;)

Joking.

V6 Diesel sounds ideal then and definitely with an Autobox.

Wont have the money for a while yet as I have my 3rd child due in 7 weeks (this is the last one I can assure you all) - but maybe in a few months time unless something pops up in the roffles..

Last time I drove a 75 was back in 2009 when working for Reg Vardy Rover. Some where brand new. I remember the drive well. Shame I know no one who owns one locally - might of been able to borrow one for a bit.

Thanks for the insurance advise.... sounds great!!

I've had a diesel auto tourer and it underwhelmed me to be honest.

I have a v6 auto and in my mind suits the car much better. On a run my on board computer says 41.2mpg but in real terms doing brim to brim was 38.9mpg. Around town I see 27mpg. Lovely cars the auto v6

^^ the diesel isn't a v6, it's an I4 BMW sourced unit.
