Just sold our Picasso on eBay - strangely the winning bidder is in Poland. Don't think he's a 'phantom' as he asked alot of questions beforehand then used the 'buy it now', but begs the question why someone would want to travel most of the way across europe for an 8 year old car, which once taken there will have the steering wheel on the wrong side???Are these sought after in eastern europe or something??

Actually, just looked on ebay.pl auto - similar age / spec / miles: 18000 euros.:shock::shock::shock:

Is he still in Poland or It's it just the account that is?you might find they have moved to England but not updated the account.

In his questioning he said he was in Poland & asked if it was OK to bid.... I guess even if an RHD is worth a bit less, he's still in clover by several grand.

Ha ha ha! I remember just the other day I was sending you hassle over the eBay "Ask seller a question" feature pretending to be a foreigner, now you get a real one!

Yes, but your attempts to be either a faux-pikey or posing as the World's Greatest Idiot are always transparent. Amuses me no end though.

I shipped a Nissan Pulsar GTiR over to Norway for a bloke a few years ago. It was £3k here which was actually quite pricey for one at the time but they were going for £10k+ over there then. I know when I was last in Finland new or used cars up to about 10 years old were really expensive. I suspect that may be the case in other eastern European countries.

Reminds me of a mate of mine who recently sold his clapped out Vauxhall Frontera to chap from Poland. My mate was convinced it was some kind of scam when the bloke said he was coming to look at it, but he was along distance lorry driver. Turned up the night before agreed meeting time in his rig and slept in it round the corner, knocked on my mates door in the morning, paid the asking price, loaded the car into his rig and celebrated the sale with a beer. Turns out this fella and his mates like to race them round muddy fields back in his home country! I guess they never sold them there?

Maybe the price difference allows for an LHD conversion making it worth full money over there. I used to sell Octavia Diesels and the odd chrome-grilled Felica to a Czech, who used to get a cheap flight to leeds-Bradford, a train to Dewsbronx, buy the car and have it in a container at Hull docks that night, and he explained that even with the LHD conversion which they would all receive there was still an enormous margin - even though they were made there they still couldn`t get enough of them.

france can be ruddy expensive for secondhand cars too

My Grand Voyager (which even though it had 174k on it all worked) was bought cash on the spot by 3 poles, who even took there shoes off when they came in my house - couldn't be an easier sale. As an aside, the place my Feletio ended up in Prague reckoned a LHD conversion would cost 500 euros on most things.

Sad to report that a friend's right-hooker Avantime went to France. The pound is weak, making our motors very tempting - though this was before currency crashes and merely because Avantimes are very pricey in France. Not that odd really - I mean, how much left-hand drive shite is there in this country?

The test station I use at work has a car lot and recently sold a grossly overpriced T plate Jag to a guy from Denmark who exports them to Cairo of all places. He told them he'd buy any they could find!

I bought a White 1993 Astra Saloon a few years ago for £30. It needed a bonnet, headlamps, radiator etc after a light tap. I repaired the damage, drove it around for 6 months or so, and flogged it for £420 to a Polish lady. It's out there now, and comes back every few months on a lend/lease basis with Polish workers who live over here.............seems to be a good way of getting through customs I guess.

Polish man has confirmed he will arrive tomorrow AM...Is there anything special I need to when completing the sale - as it's going straight overseas??Also, as it's being exported, is it possible for me to keep the tax (9 months left on it) AND our man be legal to drive it to Dover?? Seems daft if it's going & not coming back as the tax is effectively useless once he's on the ferry...?

Posted

If you whip the taxdisc out then he can only be "done" for not displaying the disc - so it will still show as taxed on ANPR, and your man is unlikely to be seen by Plod unless they inspect the Dover ferry queues...

Posted

You paid for the tax, you own it and if you don't own the vehicle any more you are within your rights to keep it, if he's not paying for it. As welfare said, the ANPR will show it as taxed until the DVLA get the disc in their hands. Have you got an old one, just for appearances? You could ask him to pay for it, and maybe throw in the information he shouldn't drive without the tax (it could be impounded) but you will keep it or he can pay for it. Make sure you get him to sign the receipt, which you keep a copy of. This is the actual proof of ownership, not the V5. The V5 only states the keeper, but as it has your name on it (until it gets back to the DVLA) it will mean you get any crap he might leave in his wake, like that failure to display or any speeding tickets. I just read the back of the nearest V5, and section 11 deals with export, but it looks like it only applies if you export it yourself. Personally I would treat it as a UK sale unless you see it on the boat yourself.

The law is that a UK registered car has to be taxed even if its used abroad weirdly, I expect out Polak doesn't give a shit about such minor detail though so I would take the disc and cash it in pronto-he won't need it.

I bought my VW T25 from the UK without road tax and drove it for a few days and then brought it back to Jersey, all I would've said to any copper when challenged is "Diplomatic immunity" but in a deep South African accent like that badass dude in Leathal Weapon.

^^^ "You could not even give me a parking ticket!"Just tell him to watch out for cops with only 4 days 'till retirement

Colour scanner set to copy = tax disc that'll do the job till he gets on the Ferry. NOT THAT I HAVE EVER Done this more than once on shite I have sold but kept the tax on ( so the buyer could get the car home). But thats probably slightly dodgey and may even border into fraud and forgery ( though quite why if the car is actually still taxed I dont know).

Tis called forging a government document Father T, smacky smacky wristies for suggesting it! I would not ever ever condone doing such a thing!

you will find the reflective metallised bands each side do not copy well, but other than that, foolproof.I always display a copy on my convertible as (a) it can get nicked easily(B) if it gets wet, even in its holder, it discolors/disintegrates !!!I should add the vehicle in question is a Hondaaaaah.............

Edited for legal reasons

A guy I know who's a graphic designer, he drew a tax disc as he couldn't afford the tax for his car, this was pre DVLA computerisation and ANPR it really was a piece of art complete with preforations round the edge etc., but one of his neighbours dobbed him in and he got busted, when the plod asked him to remove the disc from the car he promptly ate it! Think he got about 9 points and a monster fine..I 'know' someone who upon shipping a VW camper over from the States made up a reg number and got it made up on California plates. Mot'd and insured it with said number, and even got pulled a few times in it. No one ever questioned it..

Yeah, you wouldnt believe that to look at all the UK stuff over here within nothing in the windscreen. Though I will admit to doing that on one of my cars when I discovered that the Jersey authorities don't give a shit :lol:I know someone who apparently got busted for misuse of his trade plates (continually using them on foreign stuff to go down the pub etc  ) so he simply made his own fictitious pair up, I won't give the guy's name away but legend has it that they were of the format BOB 123

The export section should deal with the sale nicely, I know it`s unnervingly short, asking for just a signature and a date but it seems to work, it`s all I ever did with the Octavias, although I had an invoice copy with a name and address on, which is probably a worthwhile measure.Beyond that there may be nothing more you can do, he will probably want the V5.By all means keep the tax, it`s your money, but don`t pratt about with decoy tax discs or ones you`ve drawn yourself or whatever it`s a completely barmy thing to do in the age of ANPR - failure to display is not going to get anyone into any real trouble, whereas a false disc could be seen as fraud which could lead to prosecution...etc.

So.... Has he been yet?

It'll only be flagged on ANPR if pog has cashed the tax in. If he leaves it a week after the car's been sold then it won't get shown up on the police system

When I imported a couple of motors from Japan, I went down to Southampton docks to get them and drove both back up to lincolnshire each time without them even having number plates on let alone tax
