JohnK's ULTRA Autoshite - Talbot Horizon

Not a collection thread - but a delivery thread!

A number of weeks ago, RichBraith identified a car for sale and indicated I needed to buy it. I disagreed but it registered on my mind. It re-surfaced a little later at a slightly lower price and I made contact with the seller. The price was too tempting for my liking and was definitely achievable so I backed off slightly.

Fast forward to yesterday and I had to go meet KruJoe and SambaS at the top secret SambaS barn where he was moving a couple of cars to. RichBraith and I trekked down in the 19 to give Joe back his A Frame that I had stolen and whilst there we got onto the subject of the car that had been brought to my attention.

I can officially say that KruJoe and RichBraith are cunts. The general conversation was around JFDI! So I did.

I am celebrating this new motor with a fresh MOT on my daily - which I've just collected and will be used as part of this mission

JohnK is a cunt.  He deserves this.  He was made* to buy a Horizon (arm up the back stuff, you should have seen the force with which he tried to resist*).  And now I can occasionally drive it :)
This car is robo awesome.  It's cooler than Rolf Harris's reception on a Mumsnet discussion post.

Brings back memories - 1st legal car on road after passing my test was one of these in ls flavour.

I'm not gonna join in the name calling... but John you're a bloody legend, top man!
But FFS mate you're SO predictable, and SO easily lead - I knew as soon as you had a look at the goods Edd had on offer, you'd be away with one of them at the earliest opportunity!

At the front of the line-up when John and Rich arrived was the Monza and the Horizon, and he just went weak at the knees :D

I must say, yesterday was my first chance at a good look around the Horizon, and it is properly minty-fresh, way better than any photos I've seen of it. Just a few little touches and it'd be a show-winner. I reckon John's got a real bargain here, it would sell on Car&Classic for double what he's paid.

PS, RichBraith, nice to meet you yesterday, and to put a name to the face (he looks just like his avatar, folks!)

And that little green R19 of John's is a beaut. I drove it about 12 yards out the way to back my trailer int' shed.

Wow. Much squidgy seats. Many Frenchness. Such nice. Comfy.

Twas nice to meet yourself too!  That is one heck of a barn.  I wandered off into a corner and had a look in that Fiat 238, and just quietly giggled and a bit of saliva came out.  Nice.  I could just sit in there and relax.

The Lada Riva 1600 in the corner reminded me of my days working for a Lada dealer (I'm older than my youthful looks suggest).  Hard to beleive you could buy one of those things new in my, ahem, adult life.  Why do I want one now?

Well bought John, that Horizon is a mega hunny, hopefully we'll be seeing it at Shitefest? Nice tobsee my old Toledos passed the mot too!

You're still a knob mate. Taking advantage of me in my vulnerable state!

Just a steering rack gaiter needed for the MOT which was pleasing, she will be serviced at the weekend. She is going very well.

It's either this or the Solara for Shitefest, undecided which as yet.

Another Horizon picture for now until I have it properly cleaned up

Just had a Eureka moment reading this thread.....I never previously "got" the model names.   Sunbeam, Horizon, Solara.  Much celestial theme-ness going on which eluded me 40 odd years ago.

As you were....cracking tale, this.

Would be rude not to use it for my commute today I guess

Does Tagora actually mean anything, then?

Looks absolutely bob on John with those graphics and alloys. Wonder what else the 'ultra' came with over the standard model?

Pfft! That's still ages away. It'll have been sold by then.

Ha ha ha.

No this one is firmly joining the E23/E34/Cortina/Solara as a long termer. I've owned the E23 for 3 years this week!

The Horizon Ultra added Grey velour trim with red piping on seats and headrests, pop up sunroof, the front spoiler taken from the Xud diesel, radio cassette, full wheeltrims with lower profile tyres,a silver garnished front grille, side rubbing strips and striping with added Ultra badge.

This example has had the side body graphics fitted from the earlier European Ultra and Panini style alloys from the Alpine/Solara Sx. What a peach! :-)

I still have dreams of finding an elusive Silver Fox edition from 82!post-20412-0-83434000-1491324172_thumb.jpg

As Braddon says, graphics were on the EU Ultra but not the UK version and it should have steels and trims as on my Solara

At 46k she's practically a brand new car. First plans are to give her a good clean up throughout and a dose of wax and a good service. Then she will be out and about as much as possible...

Like this a lot. Looks a world apart from the base spec variants. In that there America didn't they do an Omni Turbot?

I haven't commented on this yet as I am insanely jealous that you've got hold of this as I've had a mega horn for it since Julian first got it.

I had that a frame for a bit too, if I'd played my cards right, I'd have been dropping it off.

I do need to have a go in it at some point though if thats cool as my old man was bang into his Talbots and had two of these. I remember a few cars from my younger years but the main one was the blue Horizon FSW 369Y.

That does look a honey.  The only Horizon I've ever owned was a 1.1LE in doom blue which was fucking miserable, but yours looks like a rather more pleasant way to get around.

Now on 126k, continuing to run very well but heading towards cambelt replacement at circa 130k. I had debated selling it but for a commuting car it's ace and not as bad on fuel as I imagined it to be. For a sub-£1k commuter it still looks fairly smart turning up for meetings etc and allows me to blend in on days when I don't want to stand out in something old.

It the figures are to be believed it's running between 210-215bhp following re-map. I like the fact it looks so understated.

So no, you can't have it back 😆
