Sunday morning musing... Which autoshite bahnstormer?

You're to go on a driving trip across Europe, but you've yet to select your vehicle. It's got to be under £1k (no speculative eBay auctions that are obviously going to go way over budget!), be presentable & the sort of car that you could soak up miles in. No other rules - running costs not an issue. What would you go for?

XJ, no question. Preferably a ropey XJR, but I doubt they are that cheap.

Omega 3.0 or 3.2  V6 without a shadow of a doubt

S70 or V70. Must be T5 flavour though. The best seats in the business and will happily cruise at 140.

for the last few years I've done exactly this, just not with such an extravagant budget.

2014 Rover 600 - £100, 3 of my daughters took it to France for 3 weeks. On their return I MOT'd it daughter no.4 then used it for 2 years. Sold for £75 still running perfectly but with big dents front and rear + smashed headlight that would have posed a problem for MOT.

2016 Mercedes C200- £350 . Oldest daughter and 3 friends did similar 3 week trip then passed it on to Roverkiller. She got £525 and kept the car after minor accident( not her fault!) Sold a couple of weeks ago when MOT ran out for £200 for export to Ghana.

2016 Audi 100 Avant - £350. My turn this time. Took it for family trip touring France- didn't miss a beat. Sold for £650 on Car and Classic on return , kerching!

2016 BMW 520 £250- decided it was too small so bought the Audi , mYbe use it this year, but I consider it cheating if you buy holiday car more than a week before the trip!

My pictures won't come out of the cloud, will try later.

Is the plan to abandon the car in flames at the end of the trip to your Euro destination and hop a Ryanscair home, or is the heap supposed to get you back as well?

There and back. Something the valet parking chap wouldn't baulk at...

...too much.

I've done this in a few BMW e34s- an m50 pre vanos 520 touring (still good for an indicated 125 but took 2 weeks to get up there) and a m20 525 ( much more long legged and relaxing) and a few mercs. The w123 300d was relaxing but smokey and slow, the w124 broke its self levelling rear suspension ( bouncey!) all these were sub grand motors. My fave was my old black w126 420se that really felt perfect for the trip. It also didn't mind firing up from -15 although seemed to only manage 20mpg if you stayed at 80-110. Happy days!

Too cramped.

Nah.

I'm 6"1' and not skinny. Lwb for rear leg room. Win.

Not that I'm biased.

did a road trip to Spain and back last summer to pick up a mate's stuff from his ex's, in my Kia Sedona, 2004, 2.9 crdi, auto - not so bad, but think I'd rather do it in a petrol - automatic for sure is far more relaxing when driving on the wrong side of the road, and the lack of aircon was not good the further south we ventured

I do love a people carrier for this kind of trip, but I second the LS400 vote for the saloon option, if fuel costs are no problem 8)

Omega Elite 3.0.

Don't do it in a 1965 Fiat 500  -  ask me how I know

Did do it in a Honda CRX though which did the job splendidly.

E30 six pot.

Mind you the prices on these is rising so it may be a bit of a dog for a grand.
