I'm actually in Wiltshire at the moment. Heading back to Bristol area tomorrow, to hopefully find a seal. DTM already on the radar. They only have full seal kits, and there are two different ones, and they want 45 quid for each one. A friend has suggested another old school place who I hope to speak to in the morning.

Can't you drive it home after a fail? I'm guessing I've missed something.

You can if it's not dangerous, I'd class the fuel leak as dangerous - to others if not wobbler

As the tax is on DD, and due to stripping, having painted and then rebuilding my black MR2 in time for my mates wedding - plus about three weeks standing at the painters - I never had time to have the car tested (it would have failed on no rear fog fitted).

I drove that about a thousand miles in five days, including Durham to Somerset and back.

 

I got clocked speeding on the M5, and had a letter in the post from Avon & Somerset plod, so they will have known. The MoT was out by three months at the time.

I then proceeded to use the car on a semi-regular basis until I took it off the road in October. I was happy to do so because the car is otherwise tip-top, and I had decided I was moving the rear fog into the light cluster and titting on with diodes, which I still haven't done...

I have had other cars out of test, some I knew of and some I never, and had traffic cars behind me and nowt was said.

My dad had no test for about ten months on one thing he had. He was unaware/hates cars.

 

In conclusion, Go DW, go!

I've done the same. I have trade insurance but BMW was not in insurance for about six months. Why wasn't I pulled??

This is a new venture for Autoshite, getting a car road legal before putting it on the road when we all know that the law is just about vague enough to drive it back from the MOT test centre several hundred miles away.

 

Will be turning into Pistonheadz soon with loads of powerfully built company directors sniffing around the place with their executive Vauxhalls.

Not sure about getting it legal before putting it on the road. I've already clocked up about 50 miles in it...

 

Anyway, off to a transport cafe for breakfast in a bit. Then I'll see whether I can find a company to help fix the diesel leak. I might then seek aluminium tape to bodge the exhaust. Tends to be good for a quick fix.

The wheels have just fallen off this caper. I cannot get the necessary seal, and the diesel specialist I spoke to reckons it's actually quite easy to bugger up the metering when fitting it.

 

Really not sure what to do. So far, this car has cost me an MOT test. I'm wondering if it's time to cut my losses. Anyone want an Omega?

 

I could just chance a drive home, but then it'll be stuck in the middle of nowhere.

Can you get the pump seal on before the recycling place closes? That way if it goes awry you'll still have time to:

It be a shame to get rid of it but it's the weekend and parts aren't exactly abundant. Guessing there will be someone closer who can tell you any places that you may not already have tried. Isn't there a way of getting it recovered back either?

Drive it to some main road, park up nicely, pop the hazards on and call the aa for a lift home saying it stinks of diesel?

I don't know that engine at all, but can you not effect a temporary bodge up with some form of sealant/ donkey snot just to get you home?

I don't think the AA will pick up if no mot or tax. I'm sure cortinadave got into an argument with the AA as they wouldn't recover his untaxed.

Is there any way to lash the diesel pump up with sealant enough to get you home?

If it looks like the bridge for this old bus give me a shout as I might be able to take it on. I am up in Bristol this weekend with a trip to Shepton Mallet this morning for the classic car thing. How bad is the leak it would have to be able to drive down the M5 for 50 miles without killing anyone. One of the guys in the unit next to me has got an Omega diesel so I am sure he could make better use of it if it can't be saved. Good luck with whatever you decide to do with it, hopefully it can live again.

Drive the bloody thing home and worry about it another day. It's not a petrol leak so it won't blow up, and it won't FTP. You're driving it home from an MOT, but I'd do it sharpish. Damp towel under the pump to absorb the leak - just how bad is it?

You should be able to bodge the leak to keep it at bay long enough to get home I'd have thought

What do you mean by metering head? If its leaking from around the back of the pump where the fuel lines go out that's a bog standard O-ring, should be widely available. It is a FAFF to change but there are various YouTube vids of how to do it from tdiclub.

 

If its the quantity adjuster lid I would still suggest getting the seal off and taking it to a seal and bearing place and getting an O-ring of about the right size and thickness and using that.

The quantity adjuster is not high pressure and the Lucas equivalent pump uses a standard O-ring in that position.

from what I saw its dropping on the ground.

 

The car will make it but its not really considerate motoring. In this wet weather, dumping diesel on the road isnt going to do bikers any favours.

No but is the leak containable?

Stock up on £shop tea towels or Aldi nappies (supa absorbent) and drive home, stopping regularly to change your towel?

 

Just seems daft to ditch it when all it needs is a <£10 gasket which just can't be got today.

This is what the damp towel does though - normal smallish hand towel, get it wet, wring it out and stuff it under the pump. This absorbs the drips - stop every 30 miles, wring it out (not on the tarmac obvs) or replace it with another one. I ran a 525tds like this for a while.

 

The thing to do once home is to degrease and pressure wash the whole area, fire it up and identify exactly where the leak is. The pump should be a 994 and apparently, they're not coded to the key or EWS module.

I say go with Rev BJ's advice, the car sounds like it will get you home no problem and the leak could be cheaply fixed if you had a little more time to throw at it. Plus it will mean you WIN in the end and that will boost your shite confidence even further (not that it needs much boosting). The car looks absolutely great to me and worth persevering with.

Plus, once it's home, you can pop out every 20 minutes*, admire the magnificence, sit in the synthetic/velour cocoon and listen to D-Ream's 'things can only get better' on the factory fit Philips tape deck.

Well, I've attempted a feeble bodge and am back at the test centre. Regardless of what happens, I'll be driving home afterwards. I've managed to slow the leak, but not cure it. Confidence isn't high, but at least they can tick off the spring and exhaust.
