Cavcraft 2017: Another day, ANOTHER Rover!

Under the drivers side rear passenger floor there's a rubber bung, pull in out, if you are careful with the snips cut out in a star shape, peel the metal back and knock the pump locking ring round and take the pump out. If you are especially tight you can just swap the internal pump itself for a few quid. Probably a 45 minute job tops. Covering it back up easiest way is to sikaflex another sheet of steel over it with some rivets. Bit of a bodge but beats taking a tank out any day.

You can see if it's the pump if you swap the dead fuse, usually it'll run again for a bit until it shorts and blows the fuse.

Erm, is this some sort of cut price Reg Bo110x retirement barn lock up of dreams pregabalin induced hysteria?

Thanks, doesn't look too bad a job that so will have a bash. I've only just got into the car and the driver's door pocket is rammed with fuses and relays, so someone's been having some fun! It actually started for a split second twice, then died and wouldn't go again, so some improvised Easy Start (£1 Shop deodorant) and it fired a few times, leading us to suspect the fuel pump suggestion is smack on. It's actually a fairly tidy car, the gopping alloys and front and back tinted windows spoil it though. I'll Google the standard wheels and see if I can find some cheap somewhere.

The Astra has been ace so far (about 15-20 miles) and I'd forgotten what a diesel should sound like. It's as 'not fast' as I was told, I thought it might have had the edge on my old 306 n/a diesel, but it does seem a bit slower. It's not a bad thing though, nobody in their right mind would buy an old diesel Astra estate as a sports car.

Billy that photograph of your fleet looks so utterly fucking depressing it should be adorning the cover of a smiths album.

Thanks, chief, that's a great tip so will try that, nice one.

Did the same with my last Cougar when the pump died..

Fucking astonishing thread title BTW.

Well played.

+1 on the fuse suggestion. Exactly the same thing happened with MIL's Focus 1.4 - the pump fuse kept blowing all the time so we just carried a bag of 15A fuses about with us and then replaced them as and when they blew. We managed to get it down to 30 seconds from non-start to drive away!

The fuse is under the bonnet, in the external box near the master cylinder area.

It'll be the slightly gopping three spoke slingshot whatever they are wheels.

This happened tonight, obscenely cheap...

...had a v.tempting offer from a yard for it. No MOT, not heard it running (though been told it does), let alone tried it out.

You can really.

Imagine the worst, then double it..

I predict a 2003 Kia Rio, 'just needs MOT, should pass fine' with an interior that's more hazardous than Chernobyl.

...but the van has gone now anyhow. Later, how to carefully* cut the floor pan on a Focus to replace the fuel pump.

Exciting* news from the fleet:

Using all my skill and judgement, I carefully cut the floor of the Focus to access the fuel pump. I'm ripped to shreds now, not many of my digits or bits of my hands in  general survived not being slashed by dangerous bits of metal...

...the 'new' fuel pump is in and working, but I've had to temporarily secure the fuel in/out lines with cables ties, as removing the old ones with a hammer and screwdriver surprisingly didn't work out well. Oh well, the car fired up first time and sounds great.

'Bloody' hell, chief. Time to invest in a Dremel I think! Glad that sorted the non running anyway. Is it still a keeper then?

Posted

Are you gonna fold the metal shards back down or will that be an exciting discovery for someone in the back seat the first time it goes over a speed bump?

Posted

We've done that now, cut off the worst first. It ain't going to matter too much to be honest, it's not going to be used for a while. The wheels are (clearly) vile, so I dug the Mondeo Mk2 15" alloys out of the garage and will fit them, once I've changed a tyre.

Didn't fancy using a Dremel as was worried about the sparks so close to the tank, so got some aerospace tin cutters from MachineMart (£10.82) that did the job.

Billy what have you done? That floorpan looks like Elma Fudd has been shooting at it.

The badge on the front I expect

Either that or the lack of pineapples, home-made rusty bits and a roofrack. This meant the previous owner was thus 'uncool' and got rid at the earliest opportunity.
