Why so cheap Mr.Mazda?

Been cautiously looking around for a replacement for my 05 Mk1 Focus Ghia and found this mazda 6

http://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/201609137705894

Nice leather and looks like a saloon which I love.

Insurance is crazy good too, same as my 1.6 focus and this has 50HP more from a 2.0

Found other ones nearer me as well, all nice looking and under 2k.

Done a little research and they are getting plenty of praise.

Anyone know if these are horrid? because I cant see why its so cheap.

They're meant to be nice cars, but they do benefit from a full rustproofing soon after purchase.

They do like to rot big time. History on the 7 plate one looks ok, if you get it park it in waxoyl  :-D

Out of interest do the Mazda 3s rot so enthusiastically?

They are about as bad as MX5's....

They rot, they rot, and they rot. Diesel ones are additionally shit, parents bought a 57 one of that shape 3 years ago and it was beyond fucked at 35k miles. Got chopped in for a finance Merc in the end.

They rot, and my mate couldn't get more than 23 mpg out of his. Was quite nice tho

What did Mazda do? Apply salt from the factory?

They are very variable. My wife's was the exact model shown in LPs post but was rust free at eight years old and I mean 100% rust free. I was hoping the damn thing would die but it just went on and on and on. Others I have seen are like net curtains.

One of my colleagues has a 2009 Mazda 6 and the arse is hanging out of it. He's had dreadful problems with the rear calipers sticking, too.

My co-worker had a 55' plate, fist sized rust holes in the front wings, then the rear subframe fell out. My Civic is the same age and hasn't a blemish on it, I even jacked it up t'other day and it didn't snap in half.

It's really weird to see such a modern car turning to iron oxide so readily.

Early Mazda 3s and 6s are nearly extinct in the north of Scotland.

They don't galvanise and there's some issue with the body sealants they use. Such a shame because their range is otherwise generally very good. Even the third generation MX5 (from 2006) is starting to get a rep for rust.

I always think...Volvo, Saab, Citroen and Saab were all making generally rust-proof cars from the early to mid 1990s.

Why can't manufacturers just, I dunno, copy what they did back then?

I think the same about modern Peugeots and electrics, to be honest

I've heard several stories of them basically being money pits. Get a nice 626 instead!

Both the 6 and the jag x type are based on the mk3 mondeo, and both rot like bastards.

Because Ford?

Diesels like to have injector failures and then seize the injector in the head.

They are a decent enough steer but not exactly class leading- you could do better for a couple hundred more

I wouldn't say that was cheap cheap, but it is shit. It's got one redeeming feature, though, and that's that it isn't a diesel. They're extra especially fucking awful.

Simple answer - 90s cars were the very last to be designed with indefinite lifespans i.e. to carry on for as long as their owners performed reasonable maintenance.

I'm not suggesting Mazda are deliberately making their cars rust - but if the pre-determined life of a car is 10 years or less, I'm guessing they just made a minor error in calculating how little they needed to spend on 'proofing.

Avoid at all costs !

The rust has to be seen to be believed . Some of the engines drink oil for fun too .

Hmmmm not so sure, don't seem to see truly rotten mk3's but a lot do get scrapped particularly derv due to the fuel system woes.

The 2.0 pez Mazda is a cracking engine though, keep on top of rust and she'll do a fine turn.

In their defence an old co-worker of mine had one and if it had rust it was hiding it very well and she never mentioned any reliability problems. I think it was a petrol. She had no qualms about driving from Scotland to Heathrow and back in a night after work. On a less useful note it was this lovely red colour that looked like it had some kind of light orange layer through it and more metallic flake than I have ever seen. Anyone happen to know what that colour is?

I'd just get a Mondeo mk3 instead. Apart from the doors they never rot. 2.0 fairly economical as well. The rings do go on them, moreso on the 1.8 causing oil use. Diesel can be ok providing it starts easy, doesn't smoke and the DMF isn't rattling.

At what you are wanting to spend anything could be trouble. If you get 2 years out of it you done well.

Whatever you buy my advice would be don't get roped into spending loads on 'preventative maintenance' trying to make it last forever.
