They're a shite battlefield for a Volvo. I nominate Ikea and a Council Tip for the Volvo battlefields.

Is there gonna be a bit of gang warfare between the Scottish Volvo Mafia and the emergence of the Scottish Lexus Yakuza?

The Volvo Mafia ruled Scotland, but now the Lexus Yakuza have taken control of Aberdeen & the North East...

I had an LS430, without doubt, the best car I've ever owned.

Oh yes, a V8 auto bit of luxury should be just the thing for a N.E. winter! I presume some sideways japes are a given....

I do find myself wondering if Toyota RAV4 steel wheels would fit, if I could find some with mud and snow tyres fitted already...

Actually, wheels and tyres from a Land Cruiser would probably have a more appropriate load rating.

After some extensive* ebay research, it may be possible. This LS400 uses 225/60/16 tyres, while the RAV4 uses 215/70/16 tyres. Pretty damn close! Now to keep an eye out for some steelies with mud/snow tyres.

There's some on the 'Weardale Noticeboard' on facebook, though I'm not sure they'd fit in the Toledo when 3 1/2 up when we're travelling north next.

Posted

Aye, but 235/65/17 is somewhat bigger than 225/60/16!

Posted

Sorry! I was sure they had been 16s but obviously not!

I'm just amazed at the size of wheels a mk2 RAV4 uses. I guess I need some from a mk1.

Somebody over on RR informed me that I can cut big holes in the air box and make it sound like this:

I know what I'm doing on Saturday!

I do like the quality* edit of the speedometer in the video. :D

With an LS400, you need the right balance for the sound it makes.

Mine is fine enough when going around town, unless you boot it up letting the V8 sing and letting onlookers looking for something much different! :D Only hit that it's not the original exhaust & it's making that sound is if you spotted it's not the original exhaust's.

That said, since Supernaut is using his more "For the lulz" than as a luxury cruiser, I actually can't wait to hear it...

Move a wardrobe 400 miles and average 28mpg.

Game. Set. Match.

And when the novelty has worn off a week later, you'll be searching for an air box made from unobtainium.

Well, I figured I could just remove the front half of the airbox and hold the filter in place somehow, thus not damaging the front cover of the airbox.

I also have a massive barry cone filter sitting about that I could try as a temporary measure...

I also reckon the novelty won't wear off for me, because V8, and I'm a massive child. :D

Awesome purchase. Didn't realise these could still be had so cheap.

I've had the Mercs, BMWs and Jag, but need to try the Japanese option.

I have autoshite dealer stickers for this.

If it's any help the Xantia will be hopeless in snow.

Once I'm actually at home in daylight (i.e. tomorrow) I'll get some photos of the Xantia and put it up for sale somewhere... Maybe Retro Rides, they'll like the insta-stance.

Ideally I'd like to get rid of the Xantia then focus some attention / funds on the Civic currently sitting in Ellon. Oh yes, still not forgotten about that! The LS400 isn't really a long-term thing, just a blat-about-in-it-until-it-kersplodes kind of thing. I can afford to keep running the LS400 indefinitely for now though.

I may use some funds from the Xantia sale to find some Mk1 RAV4 wheels with mud & snow tyres on them, to make the LS400 a true WBoD.

Maybe in spring time I'll look at how to DIY the timing belt.

...then curl up a corner weeping before driving around in the BMW 316 or the Honda Civic instead.

It seems the clasp around the edge of the airbox holds the filter in place perfectly well without the front cover of the airbox being present. No need to faff about with drills, and it's easily reversible.

I'm going to visit a friend 40 miles away today, so I'll report back later on how it sounds.

If that's where the airbox lives I'd be tempted to go bazza cone filter anyway.
