FSO Camper turbo conversion

Thought I'd just do a quick update on the camper. After 17,000 painfully slow miles since March this year I decided to rip out the N.A. XUD and replace it with a turbo intercooler version from a citroen ZX. The engine had only covered 114,000 miles with full service history but I still took the engine apart anyway to check it over. I had to replace the sump and oil pump for the FSO items so they clear the crossmember and steering links. I replaced the Lucas pump and injectors with Bosch items and also had the pump modified for more power. Rather than the top mounted interwarmer as fitted to the ZX, I fitted the largest front mounted intercooler I could fit in the available space. There were quite a few modifications I had to do to make the engine and turbo fit but it was well worth the effort because it is a pleasure to drive now and it achieved 118.5 BHP on the Dyno yesterday.

Nice job Steve, 120bhp is a result, must be a revelation with nearly twice the power.

Did you DIY the pump or get it done somewhere?

Holy cow! That's amazing

There's fewer greater thread titles to read on this forum than one that includes "FSO", "Turbo" and "Camper".

And it bloody well delivers too. Well done :)

I had the pump modified at a diesel specialist before fitting it to the engine.

Inspiring stuff!

Can the FSO gearbox take the torque?

OMGDRIFTYO time Steve :) Could the lower RPM's at cruising speed lead to better economy perhaps?

Excellent! It makes me happy that part of my old zx is in there too! Remember you talking about this at shitefest, glad it's happened!

The standard 1.9 used to rip the box to shreds, we changed loads under warranty..there were stories that the level plug was drilled too low and not enough oil went in the box, I used to fill them on the bench with more and it did help. Memory is a bit foggy....

Yes you're right. I tend to fill them up to the filler hole out of the car, then fill another 0.5 litre through the gear selector once in the car. I've never had a problem with a gearbox personally but I've replaced a few under warranty back in the day ;-) I must treat them too well.

Lol. Yeah sorry about that. I really don't know how that happened. They are all over the place and I couldn't see how to rectify it.

That's fabulous and absolutely terrifying all at once; 120bhp never felt as scary!

Fantastic, is this part of a larger plan... where are you off to next year? :)

I'm hoping to go back to Poland in it in February, then in May I will be off for a trip around Europe for a couple of months. Then decide where next from there.
