Bedford and ERF pic taken in April 2010 in Kington --- all cleared now, sadly

These are NOT my pictures, I have copied them from a certain UK truck website.... It has a very interesting thread on old Scrapped Lorries, I will post the link if I am allowed to? But if not, It is well worth a look.

Fuck me, that's grim. Even if dicks trying to get out of laybys is an occupational hazard (as is people flinging stuff off bridges at you, which was going to be probably inappropriate 'witty' response), that's far beyond the pale.

 

Anyhoo...spotted this in passing the other day. Marathon cabbed rigid I thought: most unusual. Upon closer inspection (and after scrambling through the nettles) it's odder than that. Longish wheelbase double drive with a heavy, fabricated front bumper with heavy duty hitch. And AEC badging. And what looks to me from a distance, like a 14L Cummins with a Jake Brake. Gawd alone only knows what it is: I'm guessing somebody's home brewed heavy haulage/recovery mutt.

 

Could well be a purpose built / original Heavy haulage motor - where was it, may I ask?

That would be 'Smaylefication', I think I've got him followed. Some of those vids are fantastic, and he gives that stroker Foden the heavy boot.

There's the series on coal shifting he's got too, that were taken from the cab of an E14 in 1988 iirc.

There is a bin lorry apologist that for hols used to go around helping other bin crews throughout the country IIRC, even had his own bin lorry restored, I think that was a narrow body Shelvoke or summat

It's like any other lorry,you just got used to it and by trial and error you found out how to get the best out of the engine and gearbox. Very satisfying once you had mastered it.

The set forward cab caused problems with axle loadings and the chassis' apparently cracked regularly

 

Whortons brought both of them to Gaydon this year. Note the concrete block chained to the back - essential to stop it faceplanting apparently. The offside rear light bracket is now broken - the chap leaned on it and snapped it clean off as it was so rotten!

 

Here they are with a bonus Matador for those who like that sort of thing

If you think that lorry gearchange is bad try an old Same / Lamborghini tractor - 40 forward and 40 reverse gears and just a load of symbols / squiggles on the knobs

That Quest 80 in the last pic was the one I saw, and it was on a low loader being dragged by the  FTF next to it.

 

There may have been a small Protein Shake happen at that point.

That FTF and a yellow Foden seem to be the ones responsible for dragging the Quests around. I can well imagine a certain type of accident happening at such a sight :-D

Does that Merc cattle wagon really have a 320hp V10? Mustn't half shift if so!

That black F88 in Quicksilver's post is proper Mad Max!    I saw it do a full pull on the tractor sled at Berwick St John last September - awesome.   It often turns up with a showman's living wagon of around the early Sixties era.

Now that brings back memories! I remember Shanks & McEwan operating out of the landfill site at the old brickworks in Calvert when I was but a lad. There were always several wendy house Volvos lined up at their open days and sometimes I got to sit in one :-D

Its Ayrshire Classic Commercials road run tomorrow from Ayr (Low Green) to Portpatrick. Usually around 100 old truck take part. Will try and get a few photos. Star of the show at Ayr should be JST Haulages ex-army Foden recovery truck.

Brilliant bit of retro street scenery there, I don't fancy the job of standing in the middle of the road trying to filter lorries into the census area though!
