Dollywobbler's Honda S-MX - Provisionally sold

I really like them. They definitely suit this car. Shame they're utterly, utterly shagged though. Turns out diamond cut alloys are a pretty bad idea. They sound nightmarish to sort out again too, so I doubt I'll bother. Maybe I need a set of steelies and a nice* set of Halfords wheel trims.

The gear selector on this thing is so utterly shit. I like snicking into third when hooning, but it's far too easy to end up in second. Then you end up in neutral when trying to gt back into D4. Rubbish! Also, while he understeer is cured, it still handles like a wardrobe on a bobsleigh run. Can't wait to get the 2CV back on the road.

In conclusion, it's far better at wafting. And overtaking. It's quite good at acceleration.

Sounds like they used the Joy Machine slogan for the wrong model.

It managed 29 mpg on the previous tank, which allegedly included a lot of 80mph due to bus excitement. Same sort of distance today, but I still seem to have half a tank of fuel left rather than fumes...

The bouncy ride could get frustrating, but it is a good car when you're knackered and just want to get home.

Here's a pic from last night in glorious Cannock.

My second blat long the M54 in a week, and it's now much better. No steering shake at speed, no howling from the rear tyres. I did even manage to get a bit of a hoon on later in the journey. Empty Welsh roads are quite joyous.

It does seem to lose a little oil - no leaks, so it must be burning a bit. I think that's situation normal for these. The screenwash bottle is annoying me though. It's tiny! I emptied two thirds of it yesterday, and that's with a non-functioning rear washer. Bit of a shock after the monster washer bottle on the XM. Once, I was filling that and did actually stop to make sure it wasn't just pouring out underneath! I couldn't believe how much of the stuff it swallowed.

The only S-MX specialist in the UK sent me a door switch and rear washer pump.

Door switch failed to cure the problem. The warning light is still on ALL THE TIME. This is quite annoying. It'd leave the interior lights on all the time if they actually worked. As they don't, I'm tempted to just remove the bulb from the warning light. That requires stripping half the dashboard though, so I suspect my 5p blu-tacked over the light will remain in place for a while yet.

New rear washer pump works, but I noticed that the front washer pump is actually pissing washer fluid all over the place. That explains why the cam cover is a mixture of pink and blue - screenwash has clearly been dripping on it for a long time. There was loads of smeggy sealant around both bumps, suggesting someone has tried bodging this one before. In hope more than expectation, I've smeared Cap'n Tolley's around the base of the pump. That's now curing. New pump the ultimate answer.

I bought some sealant for my plastic shed that can be used when things are wet, might be worth a try?

Posted

Pumps aren't expensive. I've ordered one up in case my miraculous bodge doesn't work.

Unscrew all door contact switches and reconnect one at a time and see which one is causing the light to remain on .

If its not that then its either the wire shorted to earth or a faulty lamp unit

Posted

I've disconnected all of them and the light remains on. If you earth either front switch, the light goes slightly dimmer.

Silver Hammerite smooth is your friend.

Those wheels were diamond polished and lacquered, but scratched, corroded, and generally minging, until I flappered and brush painted them.

Here's the unusual cam cover. I guess different colours of screenwash have been used, and then leaked, over the years.

I have tried slathering sealant all over the base of the pump, but it's still leaking. Guess there's a fair bit of pressure in a washer pump! A brand new one is on its way.

In the meantime, I've actually fitted a clue to what it actually is. SMX Owners sticker.

I dread to think how much your neighbour has spent getting a td5 to 260k!

He's not afraid to spend the cash. I know things like the turbo and gearbox have been replaced. He keeps it spot on. He has finally given in and replaced the ACE with conventional anti-roll bars though. Reckons he can't tell the difference, and he likes to push on a bit.

Afraid or not disco 2 owners HAVE to spend the cash ! Find it so annoying that lr fixed the body rot on the 2 but gave the customers a chassis painted in sea water instead

I spotted what I think was a one of these tonight, sorry for the dodge photo taken on the move!

I could hear the tunes from it over my tunes from about a mile away so they've obviously made the most of that interior space.

Aye, that'll be one. They are quite popular with the 'funny wheel angle, no suspension' crowd for some reason. Mine in factory form is low enough to ground out at times! Having that spare wheel located under the front floor isn't ideal.

Posted

Yeah, not surprising that they're popular in the south west. Anyway, new front washer pump fitted this morning. The seal that came with it was utterly shit, but the old one seems fine. Hopefully the water will now actually stay in the bottle until required.

For a moment there I thought you'd fitted a really tiny aftermarket HRW.

This is by far the most reflective car I have ever owned.

Which, judging by the birds I've seen flying around our neighbour's Mazda 6 estate with tinted windows, is why it's forever getting covered in crap.  They're fighting with their reflection.
