It sounds to me as though the centrifugal weights system in the driving pulleys is either damaged or seized (unusual) or that the sliders are seized on the shaft(s)  - this could happen on a car which has not been moved for long periods.  Having a defective diaphragm or leaky vacuum system should only make the transmission less responsive but not stuck.  The centrifugal expand/contract system will still cause the ratio to change.  The driven pulleys (final drive) are, from memory, simply spring loaded to maintain squeeze on the belt in response to whatever the drive pulleys (engine end) are doing.

The only failure I had on mine (no FTP) was the spider spring in one of the pulleys had fractured a couple of legs.  I actually replaced the spring with a new one and found the whole set-up delightfully straightforward to dismantle and service compared with the incomprehensible workings of an ordinary slush box type auto.  The DAF transmission is bulky and heavy though.  Not something I would want to tackle now in my decrepit state.  My comments come courtesy of two periods of Volvo 66 ownership in the early 1990s (approx.).

PS.  I assume the 'Hold low ratio' button has not been pressed.  Being a previous DAF owner, you would be aware of that possibility though!

I did press it, but only to see if it lit up. I've since disengaged it, but wondering whether whatever locks the ratio in place might have got stuck.

Spoke to daf owning mate.

He said that even if knackered diaphragm it would still 'change up' albeit a high revs/noise.

From what described it seems more that the switch is 'on' and holding the transmission.

Testing: turn car on and let it idle (no choke). Press the dash switch to the left to turn it on and it should light up.

If the revs increase it is ok.

He said timing can be a big issue for these and he can let you have a manual if needed.

I can PM you the Essex Daf venue if you have nay way of getting the car there, they will happily go over it for you.

Just to clarify. Have you got to rev like fuck straight away from standing to get it to the 20mph barrier, or will it pull away at lowish revs which then build steadily up and up?

If reving like a twat from the start this might indicate a goosed clutch/worn plate. There is an inspection slot at the top of the bellhousing through which you can see. There might be a plastic bung/cover in place. Just take it out and check

There is a guy in Needham Market who knows these inside out and back to front. He has an actual Volvo DAF beard.

If I can remember his details I'll get back in touch ASAP.

Good luck.

Is that Mac? Big beard, likes to wear hats? Has Volvo 300's.

Wuv, I can give you my mates number so you can speak to a member of the Daf bothering community in real time if you want.

Well I think it's a bit mended. Drove it round the industrial estate a bit more playing with the hill hold switch and at one point when I switched it off I heard the revs drop slightly. Just driven it 5 miles to dump it on a mates driveway and it got up to 50 OK. So plan now is tax it in the week at the post office, then back to KL next weekend with some fresh pez (lots a bit spluttery) and attempt the drive home. Which is better than what the plan was an hour ago.

You absolute winner.

so it sounds like it maybe just wants using?

ace, and an acer buy sir! it looks very, very nice.

i really have a soft spot for the little daft vario-matics though i've never owned or driven one.

plus this thread just goes to show that this website is the bestest place on the interweb.

where else could a member who goes and buys funny or  obscure car, finds its not doing what it should, how it should, ask other members who offer good advice or contact details to top boffins who know said odd or obscure car.

what a top community!!

Just so I'm clear, you got the bus or something to Kings Lynn auction, bought a Daf that's been off the road (in Stondon no less) for 17 years because all the other Dafs were even more broken, and are attempting to drive it home?

YOU ARE LEGEND. Nearly made it, too.

Thought that was a good buy but I gave it a swerve as I thought it would probably need trailering. When they did get it going the brown saloon wouldn't go in gear.Thought the Skoda fun truck was cheap (if you like welding).Wasn't brave enough to bid on the Soarer with no dash lights and ,yet again, I came away empty handed.

Princesses, Ranchos, and now a Daf!  All this excitement is too much.

Not exactly...  I drove over in the CX.  I had no intention of buying anything, it was just going to be a day out with a mate.  I hadn't even looked at the catalogue this time.  I was immediately tempted by the two Dafs though, which were right by the entrance - the brown one was supposed to go through first but it FTP'd so they drove the white one through, and I put my paw up not expecting to win it (what with KL prices being a bit mental these days), but I actually ended up nabbing it for less than my max bid.  I will be driving it home though (or at least attempting to), once it's showing on Plod's computer as taxed and insured.

It's funny, because it's not been taxed since 1999, yet someone spent £234.65 on getting it through an MOT last October, and it's got a nearly new battery on it too.  Most strange.  It was actually a one owner car from new before Stondon bought it - [doctor mode] a Mrs Agnes Ida Leverill of Haven Avenue, Clacton-on-Sea [/doctor mode] - and it came with the original bill of sale and PDI checklist, as well as the handbook, service book and dealer list.  Mileage is pretty low (and it's not done much since the last MOT, as you'd expect).

From a quick poke around at the auction site it actually looks quite solid underneath.  The brakes are good, the steering feels OK if a little tight.  It doesn't appear to have any sidelights at the moment, but headlights and tail lights work, as well as brake lights, indicators and wipers, so it's got the essentials.  I still don't think the transmission is working as it should as it's not dropping into "overdrive" mode when I roll off the throttle, so it may still have a vacuum problem, but at least the pulleys are shifting now.  None of it looks like rocket science anyway so hopefully I'll be able to sort it myself as and when.  The engine seems quite healthy though - as it should after such a minimal mileage.

I can't see it needing a vast amount for its next test, and it's tax exempt so it should be a cheap thing to keep, although I can't see myself putting huge mileages on it even when it's fully fixorated.  And if it does turn out to be fucked, at least I've got a spare engine for the Renault 6...

Have to ask the rude question. How much was it?

Hammer came down (much to my surprise) at £320.  With ACA's rip-off commission and VAT added on, the total bill came to £440.

Did you stay to the end?  What did the orange Trabi make?  I was half tempted (had I not won the Daf), but the steering wheel had disintegrated and the cover they'd put over the top was too big, so turning the wheel just resulted in the cover turning and the wheel staying put, which could have been a bit hairy.

Wonder if they were doing the gears wrong on the 55?  I remember the flat twins having an even greater dislike of engaging gear with the engine running than the 4-pot cars.

440 quid???? Fuck me that was cheap. Projects are going for a couple of hundred more than that.

You should make a few quid when the time to sell comes around.

Nicely bought.

I remember when DAFs were ten a penny on here, like they were Talbot Ranchos or something.

Am jealous as love driving these. I wouldn't hesitate in owning another.

I was thinking exactly the same thing myself;  You forgot to include, 'someone - being otherwise unable to assist with technical or practical advice - posts an appropriate and pertinent internet-sourced meme, for genuine lolz'.

You could write a sitcom based on some of the antics on here, but people would say it was too far-fetched.

You are even more of a flippin legend for going there in a CX and nabbing it for £440 all in. Sounds like you'll have it up and about in no time, a gent of your capabilities.
