Over a grand for a service and over £200 to change the oil but I guess the coffee must be free and a 3 series is even more expensive for servicing.

I just did the oil change on my car which took all of 10 minutes and £20 as I used a decent oil (shell helix fully synthetic) and a decent filter.

And being a little 4 pot it only takes four and a half litres of the stuff but was wondering what BWW would charge for the service and was quite shocked.

I also did the plugs and air filter the other month (the car doesn't have a pollen filter) so I guess it took under an hour with plenty of tea-breaks and gave it a general check over and reset the service indicator with a bit of wire and I just write in the service book what's been done when but to do the job wouldn't of cost more than 40 quid in parts for an inspection 2 but would anyone really pay this for a Bmw stamp in the service book surely people don't really pay this.

A colleague used to (the one who owns a mini, I posted about it last year)

She was about to sink £300 into a 'inspection' before I ran through the list with her and we 'inspected' it from our desks and she decided she wasn't going to bother

Then scaryoldcortina posted an amazing piss take video based on the BMW one she got

If sir has to ask then sir can't afford it!

£205... That's £12 for the oil at trade, similarly £4-5 trade for the filter, £10 to pay the lad to change it in wages then the pittance left is spent on pot plants and the utterly despicable sales departments bonus.

Bloody hell how can they possibly get away with that.

Because very few real people use them, when we took ours for a free recall on the airbag, we worked our way through as many free cans of coke, coffees and biscuits as we could surrounded by 'business' people who no doubt had the cars on the usual lease deals. Not a normal person in there apart from us.

That micro filter must be made of fucking solid gold for £328. This also seems to prove (to me) that the 'all important service history' some people go on about is bollocks, as if you had say ten services on your car there's no way in this world it'll be worth £10K more.

I wouldn't mind but my old motor doesn't have a micro filter but BMW still want to charge for one lol.

But does a lot of the service work get done as part of some deal paid for at purchase or something so few people actually pay that much?

Are you sure it's not in the cabin? I could be wrong but don't BMW call the pollen filter a micro filter?

I don't know why it's so expensive on your Z3.

Before everyone lines up to tell me again what a wanker I am for running a new BMW, I paid upfront for the first 5 years of main agent servicing and MOT labour charges and it cost nothing remotely like what you've been quoted for one Inspection 2. I can't remember the exact amount but it was a few hundred quid, which compares just fine with my usual village garage that works on the rest of the fleet.

Some independants are nearly as bad. One quoted me nearly £ 300 for a service on the A6 including pollen filters. I got it done elsewhere for £180, I did the cabin filters myself - £ 6 off ebay.

BMW= expensive service and parts.

Hell they wanted £697+ vat and fitting for a replacement radio in my e39. They also wanted £750 for a new key and £197 for a small fuel hose.

If you own a bmw then be prepared to service it yourself, the dealers will have your pants down every time

my E46 key was £120 from a main BMW dealer which I thought was horrendous until I heard a woman at work had been shafted for £700 for a key for a FIAT for fucks sake. And other parts for the E46 have been comparable or less than the Passat we had of similar age.

Are E39 ones special order or something?

Three bolts, four washers, a gasket - 48 quid:

Filter housing - 68 quid:

I literally vomitted when the small 4 inch rubber pipe I wanted was £50. I don't mind paying for genuine stuff, but it's a li'l bit pricey.

I'll give them their due, the Chester BMW parts department has a huge warehouse with every part in.

I remember someone telling me that Korean medical insurance is like this.  If you sign up and pay yearly, it isn't too horrendous overall, but walk in and ask for an operation or something and you are well and truly shafted.

Those parts prices are mental though.  Shows that breaking one would be worthwhile.

My 3 year old Focus is due a major service, even though it's only done 17k, i had it booked into Ford for today at £265 much to my disgust but I've now booked it into a Ford specialist who my dad uses at £150 all in for the same job. It's still annoying as it's probably £40 to do the job myself but i want to get a stamp in the book.

Just buy a fucking stamp off ebay and do it yourself. Buy 3 and alternate them and spend all the money you save on awesone new hats.

My wife's mini is on the service plan, excellent value for money. My Car is on MB's version - that is horrendously priced. My 14 year old Audi gets serviced by a Skoda (authorised service only) dealer with the latest vagcom for not much more than back street garage money. Aggregated across the three it works out even.

Try genuine Ford parts for rip off prices over 160 quid for a thermostat and manky plastic housing

Not sure of the difference in cost but BMW do offer something called Value Service for older cars. My brother has used it on occasion and seemed to think it represented reasonable, er, value.

I might do a 'Doug DeMuro', waste everyone's time and take my Xedos 6 down the local Mazda - Alfa garage (the same one which eyeballed the pogweasel MX-3 with visible disgust) to see what they'd charge for a minor and major service. And nick all of their coffee anyway and fart in one of the Mitos they share showroom space with.

Betcha it'll be at least a three figure sum beginning with a 3.

Those value drums of 5W30 have to be paid for somehow.

I'm trying to cover 18k as fast as I can in my BMW so I can take it for a service, I didn't realise there were cans of coke up for grabs!

That's just reminded me, I've got some kind of service deal on the modern FIAT.  I only went for it as it includes software updates which can't be had from any where else but them.

I really have to remember to have the car in before the warranty runs out and the first mot is due or else I've shelled out for nothing.

Sometimes you get a Klix coffee out of FIAT dealers but not always, got nowt when I bought the 4x4.
