Garage find Rancho - the bronze one. Rust update, p15

Don't worry Jake, I never had a toy Rancho when I was a nipper either.

That was in the 60s though, before the Simca 1100, never mind before Rancho!

I do now have a lovely red Corgi 1/36 scale Rancho, which is even RHD.  It came from someone here - Bucketeer? IainL? - and I may have one or two Juniors somewhere too.  I don't seriously imagine I'll ever lay hands on a full-size one again now though.

If anyone was interested in the expat Rancho, the ad makes exciting reading:

"More rarely it is almost impossible! Yesterday evening times Laboon ran again on TV! To see gorgeously, a Rancho in such great condition (new cars) ...

quite so good this is expected to be currently not!

The Rancho is has !, right steered a Ford get in addition to the island engine together with transmission implanted!

The mileage is appreciated! The searchlights are dismantled, and are not sold with, incidentally, I have only so purchased the Rancho!

The body substance but relatively well, it would be worth a deconstruction of the original

The Rancho is conditionally roadworthy and of course also has a few other little quirks, so who expects a new car, please look for somewhere else next, good luck.

the warranty is expired, incidentally also for about 30 years! All Rancho friends who have not yet quenched, are welcome, unfortunately this is the only my 5 Rancho's I want to sell at the moment! Buy and Rancho in every state! Please offer everything!"

Always a good sign when the body substance but relatively well.

On a different note, I'm awaiting Thursday with intrigue.

And again in English, albeit with rather more exclamation marks than a sane man would use...

You'll hardly find rarer than this! La Boum was on TV again last night! Fantastic to see a Rancho in such great condition (new car)...

As you'd expect, this one is not currently in such good condition!

The Rancho is RHD(!), was fitted with a Ford engine & gearbox in Britain!

Mileage is estimated! The searchlights have been dismounted and are not sold with the car, incidentally that's the reason I bought the Rancho!

But the shell is comparatively good, so it would be worth returning it to standard

The Rancho can be driven to a point and naturally has a few other minor faults, anyone expecting a new car should look elsewhere, and good luck.

BTW the warranty also expired about 30 years ago!

All Rancho fans that I haven't managed to scare away are welcome, unfortunately this is the only one of my 5 Ranchos that I want to sell at the moment! I'd also be interested in buying Ranchos in any condition! Feel free to offer me whatever you have!

The rear wiper thing really is bizzare, especially when you think British Leyland couldnt be arsed to make the FRONT wipers sweep the right way on some of their home sold products..

I mean, what difference would it really make on the back? Totally nuts.

I had a silver Rancho which I had to sell about 3 years ago, I coaxed my Dad in to trailing it back from near Glasgow to Devizes.....

One thing led to another and I lost my storage space and the project never came to anything.  It was a non runner with various engine bits missing, rotten chassis rails but otherwise quite good.  It was an X reg in Silver.

Last year I had a clear out and put on ebay a spare wheel and some handbooks, and a guy bought them who was holidaying in Weymouth so stopped by and collected them.... driving an identical X reg silver Rancho!  It was an astonishment to see it.

I could of chatted for hours but his wife firmly glued to the passenger seat had other ideas lol.

When I was a yoooof in the mid 80`s, there were 3 cars that I used to look at on the way to the bus stop of a morning, an Alfa Arna, a Volvo 262C & a bronze Rancho directly next to my bus stop. I think it was on a B-plate as well.

You must have had a difficult childhood...

Ranchos must be like buses and all come at once - I had never seen one before the Festival of the Unexceptional a few weeks ago (that red one photographed at the NEC) and now there's one joining the Autoshite fold. Like everyone else I did have some toy ones though, a Corgi Juniors and a Matchbox that I think went to cms206 at Shitefest. Had a good chat with the owner of the red one, he was telling me about the Hertz Ranchos used in the Marathon and he wrote to the company and was amazed to find they still had a load of photos of them. Apparently the Matra club can put as many exotic sports cars as they like on their stand but if there's no Rancho then people are disappointed.

Don't know if this'll work but have a video of some Matra porn on the move (with bonus hot beige Allegro A-frame action in the background)

EDIT: it sort of worked. Click the image to see the video on Flickr.

Only when I got an involantary hard on the bus after staring at these motors.. That was back when Autoshiteism wasnt a recognised fetish you see.

I had a small fleet of Corgi and Matchbox Ranchos when I was a pupper, but I always wanted the one made by BBurago, which in common with most of their 1980s output is astonishing.

I have custody of Qulksilver's Matchbox Rancho, it is luminous yellow and emblazoned with 'Marine Rescue'. Obviously any real life Rancho kept in a lifeboat station or similar would be lucky to get through its first MoT without major weldage.

Skizzer - let me know if you want it, it seems appropriate for an actual Rancho owner to adopt it.

That belonged to a guy named Martin, who I've met a few times .  He was really into his Cortinas and did a lovely restoration on a MK5 estate, there's a thread on it here (you'll have to sign up to view it).

He also did a a P100 and I believe that the Rancho was next.  Unfortunately he died last year and this is a sale from his estate.

RIP Martin.

Here is my 1/24 scale Bburago example. I had this as a kid together with the Matchbox ones but this one was swapped away.

A collector friend had one a few years back that was up for trades so I swapped him a 1/18 Beetle for this and a 1/24 Bburago Renault 14.

Love Ranchos, a guy up the street from me had a silver one back in the early 1980s, it was always facing away from me and I recall the slot cut out in the tailgate for the rear wiper.

I read that chap's resto thread a couple of years back. Epic attention to detail, and sad he's passed on - he didn't look a great age in a couple of the photos either? Edit: I've just put two and two together and worked out Martin was Tmrancho2 on the blue forum. I see his mint mk5 Cortina has just gone on sale for £5250 on Gumtree as well - must be one of the cleanest examples out there.

Didn't he used to have a red Rancho as well?

Edit again: Looks like Martin created a brief thread when he collected the Rancho this thread is focussed on!

This forum really is what it used to be!

Where else would folk be reaching fever pitch over the collection of a Rancho!

I had a green Corgi one and think there was a lever to fold down the back seats.

Due back in Scotland in a few weeks - will straight up into the loft to find it!

Good digging Sir Terry, that's top info.

From the above I've now established it's been off the road since the beginning of 1997, and is rotten at the back and in the sills.  Bugger.  Not surprised though.  It also looks rather sunburned in the back body: anybody know (anyone who knows) anything about painting and lacquering GRP?

I hope it doesn't fall apart getting on the trailer.  Don't expect it to drive into the winners'* enclosure at Chumley next month.

However...... Serck plates!  Get in!

Edit:  Other good news is it's not marked with the DVLA as scrapped, which was the biggest potential deal-breaker.

Not a problem. Looks like it's not been taxed since '97 either, according to the Welsh. It looks as though the OP's brother doesn't know a pile about cars, so the price is likely a tentative shot in the dark. Pending confirmation of the scale of gingerness under it's arse, I'd be inclined to offer a low-ball sum to allow for future ginger tickling sessions.

The suspense with this one continues to increase. I wonder how easy it'll be to fire the old girl up?

For a man of my mechanical talent, should be very easy </irony>

I did eventually get that Dedra* driving though, after a similar period of slumber (and in spite of HGF), so I'm reasonably optimistic.

If I pay a bit less that's good, but it's not a crazy price and I'm keen to secure it.  The purchase price will end up being a tiny percentage of the final bill, I fear.

*There's a video of that here, if you care and missed it at the time: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4AOHUxWnFvw.  Dedra now owned by Dermist of this parish, who is steadily restoring it and promises to post about it one day.

^ Great soundtrack choice, and camera work. How did you do the panning shots at the start? Glad to see the trolley jack was ok ;)

Yes, you do. Ask Junkman

As I said before, the best bet is to turn to boat builders instead of car body shops.

They do this every day.

Besides, tomorrow is Thursday.

Here's a virtual Rancho (almost):

It's from the game Master Rallye - it's full of odd off-road shite, there's also a Frontera Sport, a Tata Safari, a KAMAZ, Nissan Patrol and Terrano, late '90s Chevy Blazer, a Kangoo-based buggy...

Internet lynch mob

If you don't buy this tomorrow.

I'm feeling the pressure!

Good news is, I now have the address and he hasn't sold it to anyone else, so we're all set for tomorrow.

Top man! Will do once it's home :-) You'll have to come round and visit it.

Thanks! That very same trolley jack is coming with me tomorrow, in fact. The panning shots were done with a Glidetrack slider on top of a tripod, which is a good piece of kit and really lifts a film I think. It's quite heavy/bulky for lugging any great distance though and a bit pricey. They also do a small, light Mobi-Slider for phones, which given the quality of modern phone cameras is probably a better bet.
