Not much has been happening car wise, shite weather and lack of daylight has put paid to any notions of activity.

I noticed the Rangey had a warm rear wheel a week or two ago. I pulled the caliper off and checked everything. Sliders were all fine put the piston wasn't happy about actually moving.

Google revealed a new caliper for £38 so that was ordered up-saves fucking about with rebuild kits and pistons flying around the garage when you remove them. 

Yesterday morning there was a big orange thing in the sky so I was able to get that fitted.

Old one.

There's an axle stand hidden under there, I'm not a complete idiot.

Thankfully the banjo bolt holding the hose came loose so it was no hassle swapping the calipers over.

A quick bleed up and it was good to go.

I decided to treat it to an oil change too.  Looking at the filter you can see the sort of quality* vehicles it fits

No idea what a Bovenspiepen is?

It's not that long since it got an oil change, I figure it's cheap insurance for the engine. Especially as I got 10l of 5w30 for free off a mate. 

Shiny bits are being acquired for the Manta, here's a bias pedal box with a hydraulic clutch. Both of these things will be required with the new running gear.

Not much else to report in the Manta front, @GingerNuttz has done some great work on the floor and under the bonnet, I'll need to find some pics.

I am contemplating buying another mx5, this time to use as a testbed for the loom-I'd like to run the full mx5 loom if possible and it'd be a good way to test how much can be stripped out of it-abs, airbags etc. Maybe a daft idea but it makes sense in my head. 

Of course  I should've held on to the first one to do that with, I only thought of this after it'd became bean tins😂

A quick Google suggests Alpina was founded by a Mr Berkurd Bovensiepen.

 

Why the hell they couldn't just refer to it as Alpina I don't know.

Saw that. Pretty sure he's the boy who got my old 944s2 painted and sold it on to the guy I bought it from.

Been a while since I updated this so here's what's been happening with the fleet.

Kangoo

Passed its MOT thankfully. I tried adjusting the exhaust as it doesn't sit well and causes some vibration in the cabin, there's not a lot of space under there especially with it being so low-the exhaust is mainly rubbing where it passes over the beam. I may fork out and get a professional to build me a cat back system.

MR2

Has a full new exhaust system!

There was a persistent blow at the manifold flange which I couldn't get right and the system I'd built for it was pretty noisy and also showing its age after only 3 years-my fault for building it from mild steel.

A new 2zz manifold was sourced and a professional entrusted to modify it to clear the crossmember.

It then went to a local exhaust place who made a new system keeping the original cat from the Corolla-I didn't want to go down the aftermarket cat route as it's hit and miss whether these will pass a test.

A new manifold gasket was fitted and it sounds a lot better and may actually feel quicker 🙂

There's not a lot to see from the top as the Corolla cat is visible, the tailpipe is fairly restrained too

This is with @GingerNuttz, he's doing his usual excellent job of adding metal in where there was none.

I've done nothing from my end, I need to make a start on stripping down the 2.5 engine to get it ready to go in!

Luckily* for me I tested positive for Covid this week, just as the weather was looking promising for the first time this year.

I decided that as I can't drive the Rangey I might as well do a couple of jobs that had been outstanding for a wee* while.

First up, radiator. It had been using coolant since I got it which I traced last year to a leaky radiator. It wasn't using too much water so I filed that under ignore, including letting @Tickman take his family down south on the hottest day of the year last year! 

I had a new radiator sitting so yesterday set out to fit it. First up crack off the Viscous fan and remove the shroud-BMW owners will be familiar with this. procedure-a big 32mm reverse threaded nut needs cracked off and then it lifts out along with the shroud which in my case was helpfully* held on with zip ties.

Yep, that was due changing

A couple of clips on the top and it could be removed, after I'd drained it of course via the drain plug on the bottom.

Lifted out and safe to say it was passed its best.

Whilst in here I wanted to check out the air con condensor. I have a leak in the air con somewhere and was hoping I'd find a hole in the condensor. I lifted it out and blocked one port and stuck my compressor onto it to see if it would reveal a leak. Sadly not so I refitted it, not before cleaning out where it and the radiator sat.

 

I also replaced the orings on the hose fittings with new ones from the kit I'd bought last year. Then time to fit the new rad

Whilst doing this I also attended to another issue-the power steering assistance is supposed to vary with speed, getting heavier as you speed up and being light at parking speeds. Mine had been a bit variable and google suggested a couple of causes. As my rear windows worked I could rule out the body control module(yes, really) so that left the servotronic valve mounted on the steering rack. I found one for a good price on ebay and had ran out of excuses for not fitting it so here goes.

Drivers side wheel off and here it is above and to the right of the front driveshaft.

 

The top bolt came loose no bother but the bottom was a different story. The torx bit didn't want to fit, either because someone had been there before or because of corrosion. I tried cutting a slot in it with the dremel but it wasn't playing ball.

The bolt goes through the flange on the end of the valve and through fresh air til it gets to the steering rack so I did the right thing and chopped it off...

I left it marinading in Plusgas overnight and cracked on this morning, giving it a healthy dose of heat before carefully trying to undo it.

Bugger me, it only came out!

Compare it here to the one from the top,  think it's safe to say this could've went badly wrong!

I fitted the new valve and filter and then fired it up. A couple of turns lock to lock to bleed it and the steering seemed better already, I then let it warm up to bleed the coolant. A quick run around the block once it was bled and it seems a lot lighter so hopefully that's cured it!

Oh and I agreed my first purchase of the year just before I tested positive. A deposit has been left on it and I'll hopefully collect it next week.

I was on the lookout for another project, because I'm an idiot.

This is not my usual boring family car though and is a bit more Autoshite.

It's 37 years old, is an actual barn find. Well cricket club maintenance shed find but close enough.

It's surprisingly solid for one of these but the engine has seized from sitting. Great.

Anyone care to have a guess at the fine* vehicle I've purchased?
