At the moment I have this..............post-2866-0-71486100-1463509097_thumb.jpg.....which is spiffing, straight 6, 3 litre 24 valves of loveliness, comfy, vast , quick, and in pretty good condition. [Library picture, as my camera lead has gone AWOL]

Unfortunately, I will shortly being doing many miles, and economy is not it's strong suit, so I need something fuelled by the Devils's sperm.

Need something equally as commodious, but rather less thirst......and suggestions?

It's a shame that 850 Dizzler has sold Col, would have been ideal for you!

Mr Wobbler has a nice XM, it seems...

too late, sold in record time

Just take the ovlov. Long journeys are what they are made for. On a long haul you might get 15-20 mpg. But seriously you won't make a noticable saving unless you get a modunn dizzle and it will be horrid.

Bolt a VW i6 diesel in there, replace with V6 when lots of miles part of your life is over. Or find one already done.

They do seem thin on the ground, so http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/1999-VOLVO-V70-2-5D-SILVER-MANUAL-/162072821742?hash=item25bc4affee:g:UP8AAOSw74FXOcEa

I manage an easy 45mpg from one I sometimes use, going at a fair lick, and it's a 4-speed auto, so manual box may return 50 or so. A good improvement on 20mpg.

Is mpg improvement going to be better than the cost of a new car( including servicing it straight away and making sure it's reliable)? The Volvo looks great- I've also just got over 31mpg on my own straight six auto Merc. Not fantastic by any means, but not bad- the best I got from my cx DTR turbo was 48mpg. But Mile per mile the cx cost a LOT more over the five years I had it.

Some 5 years ago, I chose not to buy a mk3 cavalier 2.0 SRi with XE for £650 because I thought that the fuel consumption on my long journeys would cost me too much, so I bought a £4800 diesel Honda accord, which I worked out would save enough on fuel over 2 years, to pay for itself.  And so it would have, if it hadn't required an alternator twice, an exhaust manifold, ABS issues, and other things that would have been cheap as chips on an old cavalier. So I reckon that it actually took 4 years to pay for itself. At which point it expired.

/\ /\ /\ /\ /\ This.... will pay for itself in no time doing lots of miles...

Do I take it you will be parting with said 960?

Possibly..............just seen an interesting possibility on the dreaded ebay...............

Lpg convert the Volvo.

Have already made enquiries..........£2k for a decent system quoted..............

In my opinion having a car that you know, like and trust > potential fuel economy savings on an unknown quantity.

Ticks no boxes other than economic. And thus ideal.

I did the "need a diesel" thing when I had a 130 mile round trip commute

Bought a £350 Skoda Felicia diesel

Saved a fortune

Probably permanently damaged my back, hearing and soul

Don't do it

How far is the new commute? I did 110 miles a day for 12 months in my 2cv. 48 mpg too but it needed a service every three months . Did a beautiful job of running in a brand new engine though- constant 50mph down the a55. It was the quietest and smoothest engine my specialist had heard 50k later.

W210 Merc e320cdi estate- I loved the look of station's that he had a while ago. Ticks the space and economy boxes and is pretty quick and pretty cheap these days

I'm selling my XM (or attempting to) in a couple of weeks, I'm getting the cambelt done too!

Any diesel of the same price is likely to be frickered, and I'd rather spend on the fuel and get out the other end all comfortable like than buy a less comfy more expensive diesel.

Saying that, commodious? I assume an estate is the only solution, unless you can find a saloon with a gargantuan boot?

It's only polite to stay Swedish, although I should say "Swedish"...

These are seriously freakin' hyoooge inside, too, even the boot is decent for a saloon...

Life is too short to spend doing lots of miles in something you need as opposed to want.

See how it goes first - you may find you enjoy the faded elegance of an old ovlov. And take the hit on the fuel.

Gimme a shout if you are chap.

ZX 1.9D, possibly with turbot, have cheapness written all over them and used mine as THE preferred wheels to commute from Surrey to Portugal. One can be acquired for £250 and can be on cheap classic insurance,   55 relaxed MPG and no aches or back pain at journey's end unlike the other cars I tried.

How roomy are Xantia estates.........................? I'd love an XM, but I'm not sure if I have the bottle!

V70 tdi is what you want. Same reliability, comfort and many mpgs........

Do you want to buy my 760 td automatic? F-reg, Full ticket, new cambelt, does 35mpg however you drive it. £1300 to a shiter

How about a 406 diesel estate? I'm not selling mine but there are plenty about, lots of space, cheap to buy and (hopefully) run and pretty economical.
