The more incongruous a speed limit is the more I try to stick to it. If a committee is capable of deciding that a road needs a stupidly low speed limit they are also capable of deciding that it needs to be rigorously enforced.

They are building a (completely pointless) northern bypass around Norwich at the moment.  All the main roads into the city from the north have been restricted to 30 through the "roadworks" (there's no work going on in the road whatsoever, it's all in the adjacent fields).  95% of motorists treat the 30 limit with the contempt it deserves, but on busy single carriageways it only takes one ditherer / "yes I would jump off a cliff if the law told me to" type to slow every fucker else down.  Then nobody seems to dare to overtake for some reason, and the traffic just sits bunched up at 30 for the entire stretch.  I overtook a line of 5 cars this morning, on the Spacy, going uphill.  That's not a trick I can pull off on many A roads.

I know the site and  agree with you about the 30 limit for work in the fields. However, I was pulled  for doing 34 mph, I was breathalised, "moving violation sir" and warned that as I was at the head of a line of traffic,  then all cars behind me that were also speeding  , were all my fault. (Clearly tosh- its their decision) So now if I am in traffic I go with the flow. If I am at the front of traffic, I stick to the limit. Sorry and all that, but that is how it is.

Obviously in Norfolk we are allowed to use mobiles freely, do paperwork (especially if you are a "professional" driver), monitor your facebook page etc etc , its a local rule I presume, but do not speed in road works, they will have you by the balls, even at 3 a.m. with nobody there.  (All drivers over 95 years old are exempt from this obviously.)

"Progress" means that given time, cars will not let you speed.

No post came for me - 3 weeks on.  Happy days and very careful driving!

They can fuck right off with that one.

The gantry average speed cameras on the M1, how come I'm going through them at the advertised 50 limit and everyone else is tumping through at 70? Am I missing something here?

Re the speeding ticket. I'd just pay the fucker and forget about it. Could be worse, a pillock at our works just got done at 101mph.

Police are very very vigilant on the Gretna to Larkhall stretch

It's been like that since nineteen canteen. Eddie Honda Sr used to tell me years ago about how keen on speeding D&G polis were. Let's face it, there can't be many muggers and rapist to catch so naturally they turn their attention to motoring offences and cattle/sheep rustling.

Got my NIP through. 50mph on the nose. 2.55 am between Kincraig and Dalraddy. sigh.

3 points for 70 in a 70, but was driving an LDV,so 60.

3 for 50 in a 50, but was reduced to 40.

Next time I'll be on the bike and it'll be 170 in a 20. Fuck it.

This may well be urban myth, but I seem to remember either a magazine or a TV show attempting to prove / disprove, but if you go through a GATSO type camera at 168+ the second flash doesn't catch you because you've already cleared the markings on the road - by about 1/4 mile.

Don't have the ballz / vehicle to test that out.... thankfully  :-D

If you've got a car that can do 168 you've probably got the money to make the problem go away.

Top Gear maybe?...I seem to recall a runway, a gatso and a TVR.

Yes that rings a bell but I'm sure it didn't flash at all as to fast to register,

Indeed.

Unfortunately, I seem to recall a case involving motorbikes in Sussex last year where they invented this law. If memory serves the rider at the front was done for dangerous driving because the bloke behind couldn't keep up.

Fucking stupid.

Well, at least you are out of your misery now. Someone else had a rough day today. On my way back to Hamilton from Exeter, a white Audi TT stormed past on the M5 at about a ton. Saw it again about 20 minutes later on the hard shoulder with a black 3 series behind it flashing blue and red. Fast forward an hour or so and the same TT came rocketing past at horrendously silly speed. Saw it again 15 minutes later on the hard shoulder with a marked car behind it. Flashy leggy lady with massive sunglasses throwing a massive wobbly! I was almost disappointed not to see it again. I guess 3 points for the first one, but definitely ban-speed for the second. Not the highlight of the trip though. cruise controlling it at 83 as is normal and not-to-be-bothered about for the Penrith bit of M6, and was properly overtaken by a Daihatsu Mira. How is that possible?

Excellent, so if the 10 cars behind you are also speeding does that mean you could get 30 points on your licence in one go?  Can you imagine phoning up the insurance company at renewal time?

"You've got how many points, sir?  Let me just put you on speakerphone so the rest of the call centre can listen to this one."

Yes, at 170mph or thereabouts it didn't flash at all, slower speeds showed the markings were long enough to get two flashes without you being past the end.

Notice the new side-gantry cameras don't have markings, I wonder how they're double-checked? Do they rely on just the technology to never be wrong. I also notice how fierce they are, I've dropped my cruising altitude from 80mph to 74mph (which is probably around actual 70mph) because of the amount they're flashing. Journey down the bit of M1 between the M18 and Tibshelf services had four people caught, it's about 12 miles or something and I'm only noticing the ones that are either facing me as they flash, or where someone goes past me in the zone and it flashes in my mirror.

Weirdly, the ones further south that have been there longer (in Nottinghamshire rather than Derbyshire) I've never seen flash. Dummy cameras, or just greater threshold?

Posted

All the new ones will probably be average speed, don't need markings just the timestamp on 2 cameras and a known set distance between them.

Posted

And some of the managed motorway ones aren't actually turned on unless a lower speed is on the sign, i never risk it though and do an indicated 75 through any gantry.

Performance bikes magazine in the 90's were at bruntlingthorpe runway testing a Honda blackbird turbo nutter bike when the police/gatso mob turned up.

They asked the road testers to go through the camera setup and they obliged.

176.9mph, no camera activation and red faces all round.

I must say, even though my bike is meant to be capable of something like that sort of speed, travelling everywhere at 176.9mph isn't the most practical way of not getting flashed.

Plus youd have to slow down for average speed ones anyway.

I think you'd be stopping for fuel quite often too!

If you can ride that fast, you're on the wrong roads :)

That's made my day. I was feeling all deflated and miserable before I read that, now I have a warm fuzzy feeling knowing she's banned and probably crying into her iPhone and I'm not.

There's a posted 20 limit on a road I cross at least twice a day, as do primary/secondary school children.

Very few obey the limit and most go more than thirty.  Some are obviously checking phones, calling, saw one with a bowl of cereal on their lap the other day!

How I wish they would put speed bumps, cameras, whatever to slow these morons down.

It won't be until a kid gets run over that the hand-wringing will begin.

BTW I often get overtaken whilst on the M62 obeying the limit (reduced or otherwise), I'm reminded of what my old mum used to say -  just because they are doing it doesn't make it right or mean you should either.

I much prefer the under-powered old shite for M-way journeys, makes it much easier to stay sensible and legal plus more fun.

Posted

Whats more dangerous?

Someone driving at 30 eating a bowl of cereal, or Someone eating a bowl of cereal while driving at 30 over speedbumps?

Think about it.
