C20XE "A.V.A.S" engine mess

You could 'fix' the porous ones, I know the lad who invented the cure for it. I think they opened the head up and welded pipes in or something.

Am I too late to say it's defo HGF, knackered and I'm doing you a favour by offering you £100 for it once MOT'd and fixed?

Yum Latte. They seem to be getting quite thin on the ground these now. There's one on gumtree locally to me by it's a 1.8 GSi, which is something I didn't even know existed and seems a bit lame.

Good work. I've just taken the head off the Locost, it's going in to an engineering place to get the porous head fixed. It'll also give me a chance to sort out various other issues with the engine and shonky wiring.

Fixing porous head is easy for a metal engineer type, it's drilling and fitting a sleeve into a port.

I didn't fancy paying 100+ quid for someone to tell me it's knackered so put a spare head on.

Nobody buys these with the 1.8 in, even some ebay adverts are claiming it's 'the legendary 1.8'. They also didn't come with foglights in the front bumper.

I hadn't driven one of these for about five years and they're stupidly quick off the line for 150bhp, has to be the most 'impressive' engine in a car I've driven. :) :)

Mine's the 1.8

To be honest, I bough it on condition rather than spec, it's a 70k garage queen but does come out in the summer- I try and keep it as perfect as I can.

The C18XE is no redtop, but it revs so cleanly and I do enjoy thrashing it about.

Yours will be worth a quite a bit in a few years looking at what people are paying for them now.

Everything. The snooker chalk is for everything.

The old Saab 99 turbos used to sometimes get cracked heads. Used to be a company that ovened head to point before it turned into a molten pool to seal them up.

A bag of kitty litter, sawdust and 1/2 hour with jet wash. I didn't spill any with half the engine out, but my Halfords oil drainer couldn't hack oil so it went over the sides when my back was turned.

Shitbastards! Popped a little bit of STP engine flush in and immediately stopped it as it started tapping.
Third and final oil change and now the head is chattering like Fred Astaire having a full blown epileptic attack after popping 25 Gary's on a hot tin roof during a 'world record breaking 10,000 taps in 20 seconds challenge' (during a hailstorm).

Hoping it's the hydraulic lifters that will eventually suck oil in. Fuck this engine flush snake oil nonsense. And STP!

Bloody hell it sounds like a Transit Di

The head was clean - I only foolishly used the engine flush to flush out the remnants of the emulsified oil out of the system, it ran quiet, WHY did I DO this?

Because brand power.

Am I the only one who still uses a gallon can with the side cut out to drain oil in? Could drop plug, filter, sump in it and wouldn't block anything up :-P

None of this funnel bollocks

So,basically hammering a smaller hole over it ?

Under bed storage plastic box things for me - they warp after a while though especially after changing a few fuel filters too!!

Crazy engine rattle is down to this. Both cam bolts torqued up and were tight when I removed them, cam had moved about 20 degrees out, but no damage to head I think - reset everything and it runs fine. Key on end of cam had hammered through the pulley, check out the timing angle of the left pulley. Shaft and pulley on shopping list.

Oof, must have been left loose at some point  :?

Glad you've sorted it now!

I still see this method, it's the way my dad showed me when I was a boy and is the way I'll one day show my kids (when Im blessed with them)

I think one of the lifters locked/seized tbh.

Ooft. That looks nasty. Glad you've caught it in time.

My cylinder head is STILL at the engineers, 3 weeks after I left it with them. For a supposedly well recommended company they're a good impression of being fucking incompetent.

I'm glad you found the source of the noise. To be fair, that sounded worse than the TG Hilux after being completely submerged in the Bristol Channel.

Got enough nasty orange sealer on there ?  :-D

Loctite 574! Didn't know whether the rocker cover gasket was old or not and would crack.
