Gremlin gone and mystery motor.

Fortunately not an AMC, but a bizarre series of happenings in the 944 that cause all of the electricity to suddenly fall out. Help identifying possible causes would be appreciated fro the folk of this fair Parish.

Other morning, the wife got into the car and it locked her in.
Pressing the button to unlock she was merrily on her way
When she came to restart to return home, no dashboard lights and just a clicking from under the passenger footwell.
Switched it off and back on again and all was well althoughthe radio had forgotten all of it's preset stations.
Last night, the final straw, she will not drive it again until sorted...
Exiting the M1, it cut out, completely dead including the radio and then it restarted.
Radio had once again lost its presets.
I got in to back it onto the drive, it locked me in, but this time it locked me in and started setting the aftermarket serpi star alarm.
Fired up and parked on drive where it remains this fine morning.

Aaaaargh!

Obvious answer is a loose battery terminal.....

These are the sort of symptoms I've had with more modern cars when the battery is about to give up completely,

Battery (or connections to battery - loose earth to the body for example)

bollocks....

I'm gonna report you to trading standards!

you got my hopes up for some hot AMC shite action, only to dash them like that!

WRT to solving the problem, I recommend some petrol and a match......

If not the battery, then I'd:

remove the aftermarket alarm, assuming it's been in there a long time and might be past its best

check the wiring in and out of the ignition switch and fuse box - I had a similar experience with a failing ignition barrel on an old Triumph years ago. The wires were gently deteriorating, dropping in and out and causing havoc. Relatively simple fix too.

If neither of those ideas helps then 1, 14 and 20 please :)

It will almost certainly be the braided earth lead pictured here. It may well be so badas to need replacing, they tend to get very ddamp and corrode.

Battery terminals are secure & I don't have the lead with the clown's hat, my battery is in the boot.

I'll go back & have another look at where the braided earth lead does actually earth.

Generic info:

With a battery in the boot there is  a "virtual" +ve battery terminal somewhere, where other stuff connects.

This may be on the starter solenoid where the thick cable from the battery goes. Worth a check when you find it.

Have you parked it too near a French car recently? Got in the XM earlier. Turned the ignition on. The doors locked, the indicator relay went crazy and the ABS light refused to go out. Ace!

Wait 'til start-up is a trigger for all the to windows open - in the dead of winter. That's fun.

Apologies for the lack of updates, life got in the way.
After checking all the usual suspects, the local Porsche specialists came to collect it, it needed the belts re-tensioning after a recent change and found a connecting block within the engine bay which was full of all loose bits which moved when the engine was revved, started, whatever, causing an intermittent cut out. - All sorted for two hours labour - not the end of the world.

In other exciting news, what the actual fuck is this?
I have not a single clue.
Chinese?
