Oil discussions are great, aren't they?  Caused more virtual fisticuffs on the internet than just about any other subject except supermarket petrol.

Don't get us started on that stuff.   Used to love arguing with experts in Aberdeen, they didn't like it when you pointed out there was only one refinery in Scotland so it was very likely all the same.

I like annoying Fiat dealers about oil. Fiat recommend a brand called Selenia, apparently made by Fiat for Fiat. Dealers will wax lyrical about the cost being justified by their use of only extra virgin Dinosaurs, rubbed and decanted off the thighs of Sicilian virgins before each barrel is blessed in a chapel built by Enzo Ferrari himself.

Or it might be made by an enormous Malaysian conglomerate who sell their own branded oil in ECP for between a half and a third of what the Fiat dealer wants. I very much doubt they have a special production line just for Fiat branded oil and considering this companies oil is used by the Mercedes F1 team I think I will take my chances with the stuff from ECP. What with it being identical and all.......

A bit of investigation can turn up who actually makes the own brand stuff and it's usually someone else you have heard of!

With cheap oil I have noticed it has a foul smell, like ash or a slight 'burnt' smell, which the quality oils do not have. Indeed, the better oils actually smell like oil. This makes me suspicious about cheap oil. I only use cheap stuff when flushing out an engine which hasn't been used for decades, or after a HGF or other oil contamination. I run it for a few weeks on cheap stuff and then switch back to the quality oils.

Cheap oil is good for chassis protection and pouring in the seams to ward off rust. It could always be argued about; best to just buy and use what you want.

I know for an absolute phact that Tesco draw their semi-synth oil up fresh from a well on their Nightingale Farm.

Either that or their industry crushing buyers source from anywhere they choose and, most importantly, if it meets the specs, it goes in the can.  Fill your boots when it's cheap.

Just remember that there are two great truths with oil:  It really isn't rocket science, the big brands not only keep their prices up to maintain share price and premium slot, but they need the money to keep the PR machine going:  Secondly, the engine manufacturers are the ones to blame for the explosion in engine specs.  If they didn't overstress their under-cooled, small sumped, turbo handbags, there wouldn't have been the need to create new wonder ambrosia to keep them lubricated.

I believe high ash content oils are the main killer of turbo's on Ford TDCI's

So following on from this where would people buy there oil from then? I'm after some 5w40/10w40 or similar, semi synth for my cars. Happy to buy a bit so I have a stock say 2 or 3 containers. Middle of the road will do. There are some sellers on ebay. ECP don't have a decent offer on at the moment but may have soon and I have bought triple x from them before but interested in other suppliers.

Edit: just seen the GSF discount thread so there's an option!

Editx2: even with the code they're not that cheap are they?

Very true. Volvo use the same engine, but specify a oil made for the application by Castrol which was nearly 20 quid a litre, or they did- just checked and Castrol have changed their recommendation....

Never seen a Volvo D2 lunch on it's own turbo...yet.

Snobbery? i dunno, i'd use cheap stuff like that as a flushing oil for a couple weeks to help clean muck out, and i might paint the odd fence or oil hinges with it, thats it.

I keep me eyes open on the bay and such like and when there's a good offer i buy bulk packs, usually get 5W40 full synthetic, which is within spec for all our cars, i normally buy Morris, Fuchs or Millers, last 2 batches i got 25 litres Millers for about £70 del  and 4x5litre packs of Morris Multivis for £60 del, these are usually £30/40 for a 5 litre pack.

I've mentioned my noisy Landcruiser engine before, this was years ago, when one of the makers oil mentioned in this thread was bolloxed after only 1000 miles, sounded like the mains were buggered, the LC expert at Toyota Colleyweston, now unfortunately an executive housing estate, told me in no unflowered terms to drain that rubbish out and put some proper oil in, effin right he was too and i'm eternally grateful to him.

We've had another little experiment in the last three months.

Daughters Aygo has sounded like a skeleton wanking in a biscuit tin for several years, so bad in fact that it's been put back into the main dealer (who've serviced it for her from new) for investigation twice and they insist its fine...

well, its just out of warranty now so i bought a genuine oil filter and gave it an oil change with some of my stuff, Morris or Millers can't be sure, anyway i changed the oil and thought it sounded a little better, took it for a run up to the factor to grab an air filter...do they do anything in a main dealer service any more?...and i thought it sounded a bit better still.

Back home, changed the filter and daughter and swmbo heard it and could not believe it was the same car, it's significantly quieter than it was before and then some and that quieter running continues to be the case.

Dunno what crap they're using but it sure aint a patch on the bloody oil i keep in my garage.

Is anyone else paranoid about buying oil off eBay?

Seems to me it would be the easiest thing in the world to fake.

I think some of these oils use marker compounds in them, so manufacturers can tell if the oil in the sump is their recommended oil or not for warranty purposes.

Not so - the main killer is putting the key in and starting it.
