Motoring fashions that have died out

Mrs C has a nodding dog on the back shelf of her car, but she does have a well-developed sense of irony  Also it's a while since I've seen the Prince Charles and Princess Di cut-outs with the waving hands that folk used to stick in their side windows. I wonder why ;)

Saw an E350CGI last week. First one I have ever seen. It was brown. It was in an old brochure though.

I had a "Headbanging James Hetfield" on the back shelf of my 3i. Worked in the same way as a nodding dog.

Wind deflectors, hardly ever see 'em now, even on taxis.

Tiger tails

Helphos screen mounted spot lamps

Giffers smoking pipes (usually wearing flat caps).

Bullet hole transfers.

plastic fingers stuck to the boot lid

Headlight protectors.

Y'know, the clear plastic thingies that went over the headlights, shaped for each model of car. Those were ace.

They seem to be as rare as rocking horse poo for any car these days. My Dad always used to make a point of finding a set for every Volvo he had - they looked quite cool as well.

There aren't many cars with electric aerials nowadays, OEM or aftermarket. Some MX5s still have them, can't think of anything else.

They were must-have items in the 1990s though.

Cos headlights are plastic, now!

Reading through it's made me realise that I've got quite a few of these antiquated fashion statements on my cars, sometimes because they were there when I bought the car, sometimes because I've added them myself on purpose.

Added Fido Dido stickers on the Xantia estate.

Bought a Windslammer for the Princess

Also bought a nodding tiger which got repainted due to the original orange flocking all peeling off.

It came ready equipped with an aftermarket PYE tape deck and parcel shelf speakers.

Etched glass AND sticker telling thieves to not even try were also present.

I've got a graphic equalizer I'll probably install on the Princess too at some point.

The Renault arrived with one of those horrible vinyl steering wheel wraps.  You can still buy these from China via eBay too!

It was the law* that every 1980s car had them in. My dad's  '83 Orion and my brother's '86 205 had them in. No idea what they were for either.

Klunk-Klips, that is.

Posted

Klunk klips were to relieve the tension for the fuller-bosomed occupant usually (but not exclusively) female, who found the belt would otherwise chafe their ample norks.

99* of people around here still drive around with front foglights on,and crappy fonts, re-arranged numbers and illegal use of black and silver plates is rife, too.

Touring car style single wiper conversions. Why have two wipers that clear the screen when you can have one permanently erect for all to see?
