Any disconnection would be internal to the box of gubbins. It's not a huge faff to take it out for a look though - both rear wheels off so you can disconnect the cables at the hubs (parking brake must be disengaged to give slack), then disconnect multiplug (treat with care - the latch is already a bit broken), undo 10mm bolts and lift box of gubbins up - i think you need to open it up to disconnect the emergency release cable. Then you can remove box and both cables from the boot. Cable outers are screwed into the box while the inners locate with a rather unconvincing barrel mech more akin to cheap self assembly furniture...

I can get a new pair of cables off eBay for £60 from hugary- is it worth fitting a new pair?

 

Or is it just bad design?

I couldn't see anything wrong with the quality of the one I got from Cablecraft, but two for a ton does sound like good value. If it was me, I'd buy two, fit one (assuming the n/s is now borked) and put the spare on the shelf...

Starlet Question -  I fancy doing a gravel auto test but they say you need a sump guard and preferably a fuel tank guard. Looking on line you cant just buy one, it has to be made which is way beyond my abilities. Also the builds I have found, say that the starlet is a bit of a rubbish car to fit one to as the exhaust is very low down and doesn't have easy mounting points.   

 

Any suggestions?

I might (and I stress might) have the sump guard from my old Saab C900 in the garage/garden somewhere.

If I can find it, you are more than welcome to it.

 

Then would just need to be attached with cable ties or some gaffer tape :)

Today I availed myself of Njgkeeds hospitality and ramp to fit new handbrake cables to vel satis.

 

Neil did most of the work with me as a slight hindrance

 

Up in air and disconnect cables

 

 

Dropped out the little box of magic. This took a fair while to get access.

 

Came through this massive whole

 

Shiny new cables

 

Opened the box

 

Bit fiddly but got the old cables out

 

Put it all back together and still

 

Neil connected his box of tricks

 

After some button pushing we got

 

Everything worked and TPMS was also turned off (leaving washer bottle sensor the only warning fault)

 

Fabulous......

 

 

Except when i stopped for fuel. Handbrake on. And wouldn't come off.

 

 

I had to pull the emergency yellow handle to free it off. So back to square one.

You know what Will? I suspect that electrical connecter with the broken lever. Let's get it back up on the ramp one evening this week, pull the motor assembly out and clean both sides of that multi-plug.

I will give it a massive dousing in electrical cleaner.

 

Might also try disconnecting battery for 30 mins to see if that resets it all.

I seem to remember the Laguna having a screenwash bottle a bit like that - the filler tube just screws in to the bottle ( but never very well some plumbers tape on the thread helped.

Ahhh that would make sense.  The sensor is always flashing up low washer fluid so might see if I can find a new bottle - Just ordered a used one from Ebay for £12 delivered.

Had not read this thread before as far as I know. Just read it from the beginning, was an enjoyable read.

Njgleeds had a spare evening so instead of feet up watching Corrie he offered to help fix the vel satis.

 

I had to pull the emergency release as the handbrake locked on when getting fuel on the way home a couple of weeks ago.

 

As mentioned above a new handbrake connector was sourced from Poland as this is what seems to be the issue.

 

Car in and on ramps. Wheels off and the electric handbrake box dropped down within 10 mins. We are getting good at this.

 

Some slight corrosion one the connectors was cleaned up

 

Next it was time to play follow the cable. Which promptly disappeared over the petrol tank. Fine, i am sure Renault will have put in an inspection hatch for the tank

 

 

Little pool of water and random red cable but no hatch. Bugger

 

Neil cracked out the big guns and started unbolting things from underneath

 

Loosened the petrol tank mounts and removed the filler. This meant i could pull the tank down whilst Neil released the connector.

 

 

Ahhh that weird red wire. Looks like the loom has snapped previously and someone has just run a random wire through the car.

 

 

Cable in, box back in, handbrake cables in, and.....

 

Nope. Still error messages. Scan tool won't reset as it says the emergency release has been activated.

 

Groundhog day again .... Cables out box down and open it this time.

 

 

There is mechanical connection that is released when you pull the handle. We hadn't reset that so.

 

So clipped it all back together, box back up between heat shield, exhaust and body.

 

Fuck sticks, handbrake cables are too short to fit into callipers.

 

Groundhog day again, box out, lengthen cables back together back in body. Still too short.

 

This time tried releasing it with Snaptlontool but still getting the error code that emergency brake has activated.

 

Matches and petrol were seriously considered at this point.

 

Instead box back out and opened again.

 

There must be something that tells the computer that the handbrake has been activated and a way to reset it. Only culprit is the microswitch that sits between to two cables.

 

After much prodding and poking, taps in the vice and other fiddles, the conclusion is that the microswitch is causing the issues.

 

We had to pull the release again to give us enough cable to clip back into calipers before calling it a day.

 

Can anyone explain why these handbrakes were invented!

 

Plan is to check epc and see what it says. Potentially get a switch from a scenic to see if that will fix it.

 

 

Unless anyone has got any ideas???

Luckily having access to Neil's ramp and tools makes life easier. I can see why people scrap the cars for stuff like this.

Hooge respect for both the fault finding and perseverance. Where did the little puddle come from?....

 

While you have the tank out, check over the filler pipe arrangement - I had an intermittent issue with the stupid inner filler flap sticking open and not returning on its spring after removing the pump nozzle... If you find an odd spring hook in a grey pen-type holder, that's what I had to use to pull the inner flap closed.
