I always think of the purchase price as the 'entry price'.  It's never this bit that will hurt you - it's the prices at the bar that sting.  With a domestic market Ford, you'd be very unlucky to get hurt.  

 

If you're just going to be pootling about, I wouldn't worry too much about the tyres.  My Volvo 240 had a 20 year old tyre on it and, whilst obviously old, was perfectly circular and kept me on the road.  If I was hammering it up and down the M1 daily, then it would have been changed.

 

Get the jobs listed up in order of priority and get cracking as and when funds allow.

Sounds like it does need tyres. Vibration is balancing, probably out of shape if they're that old and they're probably the cause of it going to one side.

 

Looks really nice though. I'd rock a mk1 Mondy if circumstances allowed. I do think the 1.6 might be a bit weedy; it felt underpowered in my Escort and I'm no boy racer.

There lookers aint they. That list of jobs mechanics wise is pretty much any cheapish motor unless your running it into the ground. Spending money on cars is the best way to spend money though.

Mmmm.  Many of them do it though.  In fact it became so prevalent I remember it being all over mainstream TV in the 90s, and "infamous left pull" became part of the modern vernacular.

In other Mondeo shock news the air vent controllers are broken, TADTS, and the air bag light has some very discreet tape over it, TADTS...

Sounds like it doesnt want for anything major so its ideal for tinkering with and getting a sense of achievement seeing it sorted out, plodding along and doing wee jobs here and there, this is my favourite part of messing with cars, they wee subtle things that make a huge difference but wouldnt be obvious to those not mechanically minded or into cars.

My dream is to persuade my Mrs we can sell the Fusion now and just have a double Mondy fleet with the 'new' one being my daily and the base being the long term keeper garage roadside queen.

Well worth keeping hold of and spending a bit on too. These are the direct successor to the Cortina and are suffering the same fate most Cortina's did, scrapped as old bangers and destroyed in droves on the banger track. Now is a very good time to get a good one.

The older they get the more they are appealing to me too, they're a very nice looking car and they stand out now I think. An iconic car of the 90's!

I'd love one with a blue interior.

I still remember the day my Dad came home with his new Mondeo. M828 GFP. LX in that wonderful blue/green. He was 3 years overdue a new company car but, because of the early 90s recession, he was stuck in his Sierra from 87-94.

 

As an anorak, I was delighted as it was the first car we had with RDS on the radio. God I loved that infomercial that explained it all. Being able to see all these exciting 8 character station names on holiday was mind-blowing to a 12 year old me who'd never, suprisingly, kissed a girl.

 

Then my friend James Tipple's dad got one. His was a year older so that gave me bragging rights. But his old boy had the GLX. That meant comfier seats and that wonderful upholstery piping.

 

Halcyon days. Genuinely.

I remember having a video tape years ago all about the new at the time Mondeo and all its fancy new things. Wish I still had it, along with the one for the £5995 Ford Fiesta Azura where they cut it to bits, with the tagline "Ford, everything we do is driven by you"

That list doesn't sound too bad for a £300 car, to be honest. I'm very envious of your collection. My parents had a Mk1 Mondeo each when I was growing up... a 1994 1.8 LX in grey and a 1996 2.0 Ghia in (Cuirass?) blue. I persuaded my dad to sell the Ghia for a Freelander and I still feel bad about it.

Bit of oil in there but defo water sitting beneath the pulleys.

 

It was ok for water yesterday, now none in expansion tank, I hope I've not cooked it

Unlikely you've cooked it, what was temp like on the run home?

 

Fill header tank with water and run it. If it's leaking badly you'll not be long seeing where from.

 

If it's water pump doing the timing belt etc wouldn't be a bad idea if you are keeping it

 

They are tough engines, I lost all my oil once (cracked sump) and being young and stupid drove it home dry after I fixed it I went on to do another 30k with no complaints.....Wouldn't advise that though!

Likely water pump bearings gone or seal. Timing belt off job or chuck some K-Seal in and hope for the best. Could also be the coolant pipe if it's tracked along the undertray.
