Aye, it looks a proper sleeper. Utterly anonymous.

I wonder if it could be plugged into 320T's laptop for MAX POWER and min mpg.

Dunno, that Fabia if i can make head or tail out of what the bloke says might come on a different set of alloys, different then cos they look like steelies with trims to me, is that a pic of some random car?

Again thanks for suggestions so far. OK I've got some feedback  from said daughter on your suggestions (I sent her the link). Sorry she seems illiterate (she's not) but we've been communicating on Bookface.

"sorry i didnt reply before, we went out to dinner last night and didnt get back till late. dont really like the rover, it looks quite big and quite dated i think

i don't really think much of those suggestions either, they mostly seem to be suggesting astras (which i don't like) or civics which are too big or things which you have already told them i dont like! (audi a2!)

i know i'm fussy

at the moment im still thinking pug 206, my friend tash has one and i think she quite likes it, or punto, my friend greg has a 2014 one and he likes that too"

Shame she doesn't like the idea of a big Rover, I thought she would. She does really love my XM, but maybe not for her. She also liked the Ovlov (V70 T5) I used to have, but again for me not her!

So what do we know about 206s & Puntos?

I'll see her later & push the idea of old Rover being a "statement"like the XM, rather than just an old car, after all she is a designer(illustrator, funnily enough working drawing cars!).

I've had a few mates with Grande Puntos and they've had no bother at all. 1.2 8v is maybe a bit asthmatic in such a lardy car but I've not driven one myself. They fixed the HGF issue for the GP coming out. I've had three post 2000 Fiats and they were all shite, getting worse the newer they were. Something was constantly broken which would put me off having another (one I had to rely on for work anyway) but my mates seem to have little to no bother with them! Later Punto Evos have had their normally quite pokey engines strangled for emissions,  I've only driven a 1.4 and it's just got no get up and go If they still make the 1.2 then it must be dire. My 1.4 Kia (with less HP on paper) feels much more spritely.

206s are a mixed bag. Some say they're crap and some say they're good. They seem pretty hardy to me, there's still loads kicking about at quite an old age.

She doesn't like Astra (understandable) but thinks Civics are too big ... erm they're about the same size.

If you want 5 seats then that rules out small cars, to fit in 5 people there is a minimum size (unless the people are little).

I can't be arsed thinking too much, but how about a low spec beemer would that be insurable? a 316/8i something like: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/252245337855

Don't like Mk4 Golf, how about a Seat Leon or Audi A3? These can be found for under a bag now., something like: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/401054649963

Alternately, go Japanese, but I'd be looking 80s or early 90s for something along the lines of a Lancer or Stanza (if you can find one).

Daihatsu ... Most don't seat 5, as they are small, but how about a Terios? http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/151949949779

What about a Fiat Stilo? The 5 door is no looker but the 3 door looks great in the right colour combination (i.e broom yellow with black leather). They're as popular as chlamydia so can be picked up cheap,

Probably totally wrong but I am selling my 1007 Pug. '07 but it only has 4 seats and is a diesel. It's main selling point is the electric sliding doors ! (still working) Would take a grand for it. Otherwise the 206 is a decent enough car they are pretty hardy for a modern.

Her friend tash sounds hawt, her friend Greg sounds like he's a load of trouble.

Audi A2, - I don't think you'd get a good one for a grand

Ford Puma. Good choice, does she reeeeally need 4 doors?

VW Golf Mk4 You get more car for your money with the equivalent Skoda or Seat

Honda Jazz. They're quite small.  It might have 4 doors but 4 people would be a squeeze.

Fiat Grand Punto. I think they run the K Series a close second for head gasket failure?

Alfa 147. Dunno, but in my experience the dealers are the worst ever.  You want parts or anything like a key which is dealer only?  You'd find it easier negotiating with a civil servant.

Pug 206. As Hong Kong Phooey would say, "could be"

the 2.0 115bhp lump is a bit meh... they don't do great power/torquenor economy out the box. the 1.4 100bhp 16v is a better (if thats the right word for a vag petrol lump?) bet.

stuggling to find any self tuning stuff onnit but if I can read and alter the file it can be mapped.

I don't like the small VW 16v engines - I see too many broken ones to trust them. The 2.0 is tough as old boots - a golf 4 will fall to bits around it.

My review of the Peugeot 206:

We have a W reg Pug 206 which was owned from new by MrsDS mum and has been passed down. It usually hangs around getting used when three cars are not enough for two people. Hence it is known as the Peugeot of last resort. At the moment it is out on loan but coming back at the end of the month. It is a 1.4 auto and its only French car foible is that the gearbox sometimes goes doolally and goes into limp home mode. Pull over turn it off and restart and it is fine again. Main dealer couldn't sort the problem so it has just been learned to live with.

It goes well and has aircon so was fine when we unexpectedly found ourselves using it for a driving holiday in Spain because I crashed the DS on the way to the ferry.

It is a four door which seems pretty pointless to me because I don't think that the rear seats have ever been used for passengers. I would have prefered bigger front doors.

Id love to have a shot in that Fabia

Had to put my glasses on.

I thought that wasn't very nice wanting to have a shit in his car!

I'd take a 206 any time and long before a Cunto.

Jazzes ain't that small and whilst they are giffertastic here in the UK, they are a young persons car, somewhere in the world. Harder to find, but a Jazz in a non-giffer colour such as yellow looks less* gifferish.

Was just going to say the same.

The 1.4 16v is close to the 2.0's output and less thirsty on paper but I'd rather drive the torquey 2.0 every day. 1.4 16v feels quite anaemic and noms oil.

Your daughter wants an interesting car, but the last interesting car was made in the 1970s.

Since she also seems to want a modern car, you're on an impossible quest.

There's a 2002 Fiesta on here for £350 that has plenty of ticket and looks all right.

Mrs T has a 1.4 hdi 206 06 plate which she had from new.

60k and the electrics are starting to go a bit "French".

Rear wiper randomly wags like a labradors tail. airbag light is a bit on and off.

Other than that and the injector seals giving up a couple of years ago it had done Stirling work, is very good on fuel and if the electrics don't go too senile it will probably plod on for years.

Earlier Puntos certainly loved a head gasket but seem to have been fixed for the GP coming out. I've heard of the odd one or two on Pandas (same engine) but took I took one past the magical 40k mark where they used to like to cark it and it was OK. (previous mk2 Punto I had blew pretty much as the odometer read 40,000)

59k, 5 doors, airbags and aircon for £1k.

They are good to drive (better than a 500) and cheap and easy to fix.

I nearly suggested one but most are only 4 seats.

Ah yes, but I think* if they are split fold they will have the extra belt.

(scurries off to check)

Ah, newer (out of price bracket) cars can be ordered with the 3 rear seat belts (as I did) but even the eleganza top spec model with split fold seats (which are 50/50) don't have middle seat that I can find.

When I was a teen we always had more people in the cars than there were belts for, especially when one of us were in the boot.

Bloody nanny state!

I taught my daughter to drive and when she passed her test in 1999 I gave her a car... Granted, it was a 1987 "E" reg FSO 125p, but hey, she's the daughter of an Autoshiter, what was she expecting?

She loved it! It served her very well throughout her student days, hauling her, her mates and loads of stuff all over the place (& pulling other cars out of the mud at Glastonbury!) Dad maintained it & she learnt a lot about cars, status and getting from A to B.

She now owns a Honda Jazz........
