Voulez-vous coucher avec moi? SORTED: Red 106 Tailgate (NSFW)

I'm in a bit of a pickle here and would have prefered to solve this problem away from Autoshite, as there is a story attached to it involving sex and a crazy french girl.

But as it transpires early 106 Tailgates in Red are like rocking horse shit, I have tried eBay and the internet to no avail. Scrapyards are my last chance.

So I need your help.

I am searching for a Red 106 Mk1 / Phase 1 (known as S1) Tailgate, from a car registered between 1991 and 1996.

I would like a red one specifically so it matches the bodywork colour. The car is very tidy as it is so I dont want to fuck it up by fitting a different colour tailgate.

The phase 2 Tailgates are more curvy and do not fit round the phase 1 rear lights, though they can be made to fit if you swap the rear lights from a later 106, which I would prefer not to have to do as they look shit.

Saxo lights and tailgate on the phase 1 106 is a no-no on the phase 1s apparently.

I am sure the rear window glass alone would be difficult or impossible to replace.

If you have spotted one in a Scrapyard anywhere please let me know!

No window cover on your insurance? I'll keep an eye out for one.

I notice there's a black phase 1 breaking on eBay, it'd look good with a black hatchback. Poor man's White Hen.

I rattle canned the rear tailgate on the 205 I bought from Strangeangel, and it looks a bit of a dog, but it's sort of better than white, and can confirm it's quite hard at this time of year outdoors :-P

My advice is get a pro to do it, as the cost of rattle cans is quite dear and it's a false economy etc.. unless you don't much care, and it sounds like you do to be fair :-D

That should just be bondaged in..

seriously shoud be possible to fit a new one:)

I think you need to have words with your predictive text software.

Kirsty in Macduff also has a 106 in which sex possibly occurred - https://www.gumtree.com/p/peugeot/peugeot-106-not-citreon-saxo-vts-gti-vtr-diesel-/1149459772- whereas Debbie in Cambourne has one which only needs rear brakes, no signs of intercourse - proper bargain at £100! https://www.gumtree.com/p/peugeot/peugeot-106/1149448941

Were you giving it full boff on the back seats and she popped the window with her stiletto heel?

Why not buy one in any colour and get a windscreen place to transfer the glass over to your red one?

Also might be worth trying Bradford Car Glass - they have contacts for 2nd hand glass and are usually cheap, they can fit while you wait as well

Why not just fit the glass yourself. It's only 1:1 scale Airfix.

I always fuck up my Airfix glass by getting glue all over it.

Some good guesses, but the car was in motion when the cherry was popped*

Is it possible to swap a rear screen yourself? I thought they were bonded in = impossible home repair.

I like this idea... I have the Bubberd Saxo so that glass may fit if I'm lucky. I will do some more research and let you all know.

It's not impossible. Let's look at the problem.

a) Finding a Ph. 1 106 tailgate in that colour is hard work.

b ) Finding a Ph. 1 106 tailgate in any colour is less hard work.

going on from b ), you have two options if you want a red tailgate:

c) paint an any colour tailgate in red.

d) swap the glass from the any colour tailgate into the red one at hand.

which is harder (for you) out of c) or d)?

If you chose c) then you have to

e) prep

f) paint.

If you chose d) then you have to

g) remove remnants of old screen from red tailgate

h) clean red tailgate frame of old adhesive

i) cut through adhesive around the edge of the screen on any colour tailgate to remove it

j) remove and clean edge of replacement screen

h) stick in replacement screen with seal

It shouldn't be impossible providing you can

i) have a good seal to hand

j) a spotlessly clean edge to the glass

k) a spotlessly clean edge to the tailgate frame

l) appropriate screen adhesive

m) a continuous bead of adhesive round the edge of the glass, not to much, not to little.

m) a couple of handy suckers to hold the glass to plop it into place

n) an hour or so to let it cure

The key to success will be two clean surfaces to stick together. I remember seeing on some OU programme, Lotus glueing two halves of a bodyshell together.

Windscreen fitters aren't gods of glass. They have a set of tools, then have some glue and they stick things together.

Why not have a go? People rebuild engines, gearboxes, paint, weld, retrim, etc. themselves. Why not?

I'll admit, I've not done a bonded one myself, but I've taken out plenty of non-bonded screens and put them in again without breaking them. Okay, well I broke one putting it back in, but the seal was too bastard tight and it was delaminating at the edges anyway so it was no big deal to buy a lovely see-through screen with zero scratches.

I did warn Pops_KJ that it wasn't a good idea, especially coming up our hill.

Predictably we had to do the tailgate swap.

Moral of the story: have a breaker with spec as close to your runner as possible. But the Bubbered Saxo was free so meh. I vote for swapping the glass from that one if it's the same shape.

I can't be the only one thinking that it's not the car's back door that should've been smashed in...?

After hunting around for 2 weeks on the internet I found a red Phase 1 tailgate in Doncaster.

I had wrapped the boot in cling film but that didn't last long!

post-5452-0-30014300-1453399820_thumb.jpg

Me and my younger brother collected with his 106 on the way down to London last week to drop the blue 205 back with Arthur Foxhake.

It fitted in his his boot fine and we got it home safe and sound. It is from an slightly higher spec 106 so it has central locking actuator and a spolier and different badgeing, but the colour is perfect. I took out the central locking and I've put that on eBay, and left the spoiler on because it looks okay.

I pulled the wires out of both tailgates, with string tied to the plugs so I could pull the new wiring back through. There is nothing worse than a bodged, fucked up job because someone cannot be bothered to take 15 mins extra doing it, so I wanted to do it right.

The new boot went on very easily, and the colour matches perfectly. All in all a good job!

I have taken out the seats to dry and hoovered out all the glass, its as good as new now!

I even swapped the wiper from the old tailgate, the red paint on it is sentimental...

The reason the paint is sentimental??

We were both leathered, it was 5am, she wanted to drive me back to mine having never driven a RHD car, or driven in England. She tried turning it round in a really tight area and reversed it into the Post Box!

I have kept in touch with the French female, we chat on Facebook every day, and she has asked me to come and see her near Geneva at the end of Febuary! Tickets booked!

She is a bonny lass, definately out of my league!

Have a picture of her laid on my floor having a cheeky fag up the chimney.
