James Ruppert - you're having a laugh!

Taken from today's issue of Autocar magazine, specifically from a pointless top 20 Christmas bargains article.

James would pick a 2010 Xsara Picasso, last of the old shape, for £5k.

Having just looked on Auto Trader, there is one Xsara Picasso going for £5k, 2010 reg, 51k miles on the clock. Bargain! I'm off to buy it right now.

Does Autocar's second hand car guru know something we don't?

More to the point, he's actually chosen a vehicle with the 1.6 hdi time bomb powering it. This man knows nothing about cars...?!

Seller: J Ruppert.

Richard,

Surely that's a scam and can't be legal?

£5k buys a fleet of Picassos (Picassi?) with cash left over for immediate repairs. The mind boggles.

I suspect the 'our choice' was something an editor pulled off the internet rather than a James Ruppert recommendation.

Could you still get these on a 10 plate???

I have some tippex and a permanent marker pen, so yes definitely

Posted

PS. I have a minor horn for one of these.

not often that 'go for the 1.6hdi picasso' is sage advice.. but you will go looking at Laguna IIs

Posted

For 5k I can get you an X plate 1.6 pez that has sill repairs that look like a pigeon has been shitting there after eating an entire supply of lidl scotch eggs.

£5k is crazy for one of them but to be fair I've known a few people who have had that shape Picasso although probably not the 1.6 hdi and they have been fine reliability wise.

Friend of a friend bought a C4 Picasso with a flappy paddle gearbox....

Oh dear me no.

What a disaster of a car.

Endless faults, several Ftp episodes. First name terms with the dealers.

Sold on at an epic loss.

I was joking, but I don't see why it wouldn't be legal.

Yup, and the C8 too, but I wouldnt touch a 1.6 HDi with a barge pole.

Jesus, you could have had mine for scrap value had I known - needed selector cables

I was selling the last of these on scrappage and knocking out a new 1.6 HDI Desire for about £10500 or pez for £9000.

A lass I know has refered to their Citroen a few times as 'The Picasso', almost suggesting it's an aspirational motor. Much like Clarkscum mentioning 'The Jag'. Maybe they're much better than they appear? Or maybe owners just wish they were...

I think they're nice looking, never driven one, the Berlingo is OK, which I presume is the 'same'.

I say 'don't judge the car by their owners', unless it's a BMW/Audi/Passat, etc

Shot of Bromide for Miseur Bollox please.

With the way most MPV owners seem to let their kids use them as a cross between a canteen and a dustbin, I think the idea of buying and driving around in someone's old Xsara Picasso is roughly as disgusting as wearing somebody else's used Y-fronts.

I concur - but I would have inserted "skiddy" in front of Y- fronts.

Richard, I wasn't being serious.

For some reason, I managed to blag a test drive in an early Hdi when they first came out. Unaccompanied too! Can't remember much about it by I think I concluded it was fairly pleasant. However, events at Shitefest in 2014 in Aberaeron have done much to scar me mentally when it comes to these now. Anyone remember that disgusting family?

That one in the pic with the alloys and the canvas roof looks ace man

It will have to be a really early one for the floppy top ( same with the Bingo Multispaz) - they leaked so got replaced with a glass sliding roof.

Plus the really early ones came in some lovely colours* with equally lovely interiors

Is this the same Mr Ruppert, the inventor of bangernomics, who in the pages of that very journal last week was extolling the virtues of the £395 Saab 9000, or the 406 or Mondeo at the same price. Pick a dozen of those and you will still have change fom your £5k. How the mighty have fallen :(

Picassos are actually quite decent cars. Elderly and arthritic relatives had one from new for about 10 years; nothing went wrong and they could get in and out easily. But that price :o They are peanuts now. Their Picasso was worth so little that it got written off when someone looked at it angrily.

Amazingly they were still buying the bloody things round here on a '59' plate. Would have to be school bog blue though as it appears to have been the only colour available in Scotland.

For £5k it would have to contain an entire female gymnastics team and enough snow to do the Cairngorms for a fortnight.
