oldcars Posted December 9, 2015 Posted December 9, 2015 I use Autoglym one. Not had any smelling issues.
PiperCub Posted December 9, 2015 Posted December 9, 2015 No great surprise, HalFrauds are good at that.Have a decent product, in my case the car shampoo they used to sell that worked well and you only needed a little of it, and replace it with something that you had to use loads of and was crap. Little wonder no-one who knows anything about cars uses them anymore (unless utterly desperate). brickwall and Bamboocarman 2
NorfolkNWeigh Posted December 9, 2015 Posted December 9, 2015 Tesco ready mix in gallon cans seems not to have any smell and works ok. I've used it for years and have a case in the shed from when they were selling it for 20p a can last spring.
Lacquer Peel Posted December 9, 2015 Posted December 9, 2015 Tesco stuff is only good down to -1c or something. Useless.
NorfolkNWeigh Posted December 9, 2015 Posted December 9, 2015 Tesco stuff is only good down to -1c or something. Useless. Not for those of us that live nearer to St Tropez than The Arctic Circle it's not.
Slappy Posted December 9, 2015 Posted December 9, 2015 That purple stuff was explicitly labelled as Blackcurrant "flavour". Bought some myself for a laugh last winter as I'd run out on the way home and was desperate.
Stanky Posted December 9, 2015 Posted December 9, 2015 Aldi's stuff is pretty good, won't freeze til -10 or so and doesn't have much smell to it, it retails at about £2 for 5 litres of pre-mix and I try and get a few when my local store has it in because we don't half get through the stuff this time of year. This might be silly, but have you tried watering the halfords stuff down a bit to see if that takes the edge off the smell?
trigger Posted December 9, 2015 Posted December 9, 2015 I've got a couple of bottles of that Halfords blackberry stuff and I have to admit that I quite like it! fordperv and spike60 2

forddeliveryboy Posted December 9, 2015 Posted December 9, 2015 Tesco stuff is only good down to -1c or something. Useless. That's better than a well-known supplier's antifreeze which someone had left in the boot of a car I'd bought - and it was full of ice when I opened the seal. Was -16, though. But it suggested watering it down 50% for protection in 'extreme' cold. Lacquer Peel 1
fordperv Posted December 9, 2015 Posted December 9, 2015 I've got a couple of bottle of that Halfords blackberry stuff and I have to admit that I quite like it!I have some in the saph and it smells quite nice
Vince70 Posted December 9, 2015 Posted December 9, 2015 Southeastern rail train screenwash is good I believe it's made by unipart. It also contains an antifreeze so you can actually de ice your windscreen with it.. andrew e 1
cros Posted December 9, 2015 Posted December 9, 2015 If its a nice smell you want I wouldn't let Mr Philibusmo top it up. catsinthewelder 1
Crusty Sills Posted December 9, 2015 Posted December 9, 2015 I tend to use whatever is cheap at wherever I am.I'm not drinking/sniffing it or using that much so not really caring to much.Think I have some CarPlan stuff at the mo.If it freezes up, just have to drive a bit closer to the lorry in front for a bit of spray!! richardmorris Posted December 9, 2015 Posted December 9, 2015 Lidl stuff for me. Smells fine and £3 ish for 5l of concentrate. tinribs 1
Dick Cheeseburger Posted December 9, 2015 Posted December 9, 2015 Am I unique in that I abhor the stuff?
myglaren Posted December 9, 2015 Posted December 9, 2015 Am I unique in that I abhor the stuff?I don't object to the smell - and I have an allergy to a lot of fragrances that can be an absolute bugger.I had chucked some new stuff in before a 300-odd mile trip and squirted the screen after fifty miles or so. Smelled it after a few minutes and was a bit panicked. Had forgotten cleaning the screen by then and convinced myself that the heater matrix was leaking
fatharris Posted December 9, 2015 Posted December 9, 2015 Am I unique in that I abhor the stuff?Trust me - after a sweet old lady that owned MrsH's Rover for over 12 years and only filling the screenwash bottle with water, I can say the smell will make you put screenwash in every time. The thought of that smell genuinely makes me feel ill. Sent from my SM-G900F using Tapatalk
cros Posted December 10, 2015 Posted December 10, 2015 I have a car not fitted with screen washers (all legit) due to it having an opening windscreen. Unusually, the wipers are at the bottom of the screen and have a mechanism to disengage them from the motor so that they can be swung off the screen to allow it to open. Just thought I'd mention it. Bobthebeard Posted December 10, 2015 Posted December 10, 2015 I used the Aldi/Lidl 'Ok down to -50. Contains antifreeze'. stuff last year. Didn't smell much but smeared the screen a fair bit. After diluting it 50/50 it stopped being smeary, but unsure how that affected the non freezing properties. Worked well enough as a screen wash, but untested in freezing conditions last year as we didn't really have any freezing conditions.
andrew e Posted December 12, 2015 Posted December 12, 2015 The VAG stuff that Audi/Seat/Skoda/VW sell for about £6 doesn't smell much and is bloody good at freeze resistance.
PiperCub Posted December 13, 2015 Posted December 13, 2015 If it's the Aldi stuff you favour (not used it myself) then it's on offer - 5l for £2 - this Thursday 17th. (Other screenwashes of equal, worse & better quality are available) tinribs 1
tinribs Posted December 13, 2015 Posted December 13, 2015 I've used Lidl's Ultimate Shite Speed for years. They only get it in around this time of year because it'll sell quickly. Usually after a fortnight or so it drops in price by £1. Has an alcoholy lemony smell, not overpowering but it's there and considerably more pleasant than some. Tastes absolutely shit though. A bit foamy but seems to work best at 25% strength and cleans the screen quickly. Never been cold enough to freeze up in Edinburger at 25%. One 5L bottle has lasted me 4 years so far.
Richard Posted December 13, 2015 Posted December 13, 2015 That's better than a well-known supplier's antifreeze which someone had left in the boot of a car I'd bought - and it was full of ice when I opened the seal. Was -16, though. But it suggested watering it down 50% for protection in 'extreme' cold. That is potentially correct. A eutectic mixture of two materials has a lower freezing point than either of the materials alone. In this diagram the ideal mixture would be about 60% water. mat_the_cat and Lacquer Peel 2
HH-R Posted December 13, 2015 Posted December 13, 2015 I just buy whatever cheap shite I can from insert your favourite cheapy shop/pound emporium here neat because I'm lazy.
Tamworthbay Posted December 13, 2015 Posted December 13, 2015 I use cheapo stuff and don't think the reservoir has ever frozen up, it's the nozzles that tend to freeze so don't know how much difference the screenwash makes.
PhillipM Posted December 13, 2015 Posted December 13, 2015 The VAG stuff that Audi/Seat/Skoda/VW sell for about £6 doesn't smell much and is bloody good at freeze resistance. This, great stuff. GSF used to do it for £2 a bottle. andrew e 1
tooSavvy Posted December 14, 2015 Posted December 14, 2015 My 'brand new' Pug Partner has clear wash that smells like stuff doctors rub on their hands before shoving them somewhere.... I have topped up at least 50% water (from behind the services 'A19 Cafe', in Teeside(south) and it still smells the same.... gotts 2 be reel kosher kit!
