Overpriced cars, we all love a bargain

Negative comments are disallowed on Retro Rides but I know it's ok to be honest with you guys.

Who would pay £3k for a kev'd up Ford Probe? Step up please.

Any takers? Questions or feedback appreciated..

Yes, knock £2.5k off the asking price. Unlike Capris, Probes are not subject to scene tax so what's going on?

Got any other overpriced motors to share please post here.

LOL £3000, what a risible shitbox. I see it has a set of 'type R dials' with 'all wiring to complete' meaning presumably he has boshed them in anyway, so that he can look at a load of extra non-functioning dials like what all winners do.

Talk about putting lipstick on a pig. They were shit when they first came out, I don't think time or the efforts of the Barry brigade have made any difference whatsoever.

Might be tempted if he took scrap value for it though- I'm sure you could make something by breaking it...

How come when someone says these things about a BL \ ARO \ Rover product everyone loses their minds and leaps to their defense?

I'm sure a vendor with a clean Citroen BX (other approved AS vehicles are available) would be delighted to be offered scrap value for someone to 'possibly be interested'. Is the Probe seller speculating? Yeah, he is - but that's how you get market reaction. Car isn't my bag and is more than I would pay.

Just some observations, like.

I thought it was overpriced for a Probe as well, but there's just one other on eBay at the moment - also barried, looks a bit tatty, but is up for a whopping £3,750.

Is there something we've missed about Probes shooting up in value? Or is it just coincidence that two Ford-branded Mazda 626 coupés are up for silly money at the same time?

Having actually driven a 2.0 example, the only thing all of them need is scrapping, they are officially too shit for Autoshite

Just to let you know, I own a Probe and have done since 2009 so will naturally be biased. On one hand, I find it quite sad that a number of Autoshite members, of all people fail to see the appeal of these cars and instead follow the "haha it's called a Probe so must be rubbish" brigade. On the other hand, the sheep are keeping the prices down for those of us who know what a great car the Probe is.

I know the owner of that black one and he has pumped a lot of time and money into producing a very fine example of an massively under-appreciated car. The 2.5k inflation you have referred to is for quite a bit more than 'type R decals'. The GT graphics down the side are actually a tasteful tribute to the factory decals you would find on an American Probe GT. That is the US equivalent (or original if you like) of the Probe 24v but based on your expert comments, you will all know that already.

Admittedly, I am not a fan of modifying cars to the extent that second one has been. The removal of pop-up headlights is a sin in my book but we've all got personal taste! One thing you should bear in mind with that eBay example is under the bonnet. Try fitting a turbo to an engine that fills the entire bay. It is not cheap and it is not easy.

This says it all about some of you and hypocritical considering some of the absolute crap I have seen on here (amongst a lot of good stuff). It's funny I was accepted straight away into Autoshite due to my ownership of a Probe so the joke's on you Sir.

That's quite tasteful for a modified anal probe, probably because all the people who used to "improve" probes by coating them with glue and ram raiding halfords moved onto cougars and pt cruisers, as for the price it does appear salty, a Capri they will never be, I would like one though but it's got to be either black or yellow

That Tuboted one on egay is bloody awful, and the quality of workmanship is slapdash, back lights and bumpers don't fit, dreadful chequerplate interior, more than likely structural too, front bumper smashed to buggery, wonky numberplate, dreadful graphics, tired interior, and being turbocharged, I wonder if the engine internals have actually been altered with new pistons etc?  When you turbocharge a n/a vehicle, the compression ratio does often need to be lower, which is why I suspect it kettled in the first place. Asking way, way above what it is worth, when it's going to need a fair few grands worth of work to make it even remotely presentable.

That white example has a very patchy MOT history, with lots of gaps, and quite a few fails, also the owner of the black one tried getting away with a de-cat, and got his arse bitten at MOT time. Both cars seem to have uneven tyre wear issues too. Suspension design fault perhaps?

And that 2.0 example I drove was almost new (was my uncles company car), it was ultra cheap feeling inside, didn't handle that well, steering was typically American, and didn't feel that fast, not what you want in a so called sporty coupe. My MG Maestro was far sportier, and that was uglier than SUBO in a boob tube! He chucked the damn thing back in to the fleet, and bought himself a used 960 6 pot estate.

I've never been inside a Probe, so I can't comment on ride or build quality, but I think they look really good and have aged well. I think the example in the OP looks great too and while I wouldn't spend that much on it, I don't think it's unfair to ask that price.

Avoid the stupid Ford scene tax and buy the Mazda MX6 for a third of the money.....knowing it is more likely to have been looked after and less likely to have been owned by "tenants"

In my opinion the black one looks nice but I think price is too high. I've aways liked them and wouldn't mind a v6 but I only break cars these days anyway

I used to own a 2.5 on an N plate. Had it for a couple of years and then sold it for what I paid for it. One of the few cars that I have not lost money on! Yes in some eyes they are shit, but unless you have tried one then people are giving opinions on the basis of buggerall! Would I get another one? No, but that is solely down to been there done that! The Probe owners club (at the time I had mine) were brilliant. We had great days out and a good laugh! Yes there were guys/gals who barried their car up - but this is down to personal taste ( I didn't barrie mine!!) and their cars were admired as much as the standard cars-simply down to the work/effort people had put into them.

Stand easy-rant over!!

My only experience of Probes is looking at Nick's - which is gorgeous. The idea of paying £3k for one does seem rather laughable though.

10 years ago I paid 30 quid for a tax and tested 1.1 pop mk2 fiesta trigger. It was a bit corroded and went to scrapyard. Fetch a bit now though.

I sold a couple of probes when they were around 5 years old

Awful things. Based on a Mazda so without a soul, but somehow losing Japanese integrity and reliability

Nasty interiors too

Still reasonably interesting as a rare old banger for a few hundred pounds now though, as is most shite on here, but £3k?

But that's just my opinion of course don't shoot me

I'd eat a non-barried 2.0 any day of the week as long as it was £250 or less

I don't mind a good Probe*

I never objected to the looks and as anyone who's driven one will know, they're not at all bad. I liked the metallic turquoisey blue they did, and they're certainly a prettier car than the Cougar. Like the Calibra, Probe's will (finally) have their day.

Not 3 grand though. You can buy a 330Ci for that, a vastly superior vehicle. I see a really nice clean Probe at £995.

I thought they were a nice looking car. Bit of a let down inside but all the same. Could be wrong but aren't parts a real fucker to get hold of?

Posted

Always thought they were a decent enough looking car when in good standard condition though I hated the "Walnut Whip" alloys that some had.

About 10 years ago I had a few RS Turbo's so did the usual thing every year of going to Ford Fair at Silverstone. There was always 2 club stands that used to make me laugh out loud without fail each time. For Orion Club and the bloody Ford Probe club. It was like some special religion where they believed in making there cars look as embarrasingly wank as possible. Stick on chrome trim round every fugging light/door hangle/swage line etc.

AVOID.

Try a 2.5. They sound a lot better and move well in comparison.

Nobody is telling you what to think. My comment regarding sheep was aimed at people who decide to make a conjecture as opposed to an opinion based on experience.

No, widely available on the internet. There's even a whole website dedicated to Probe and MX6 parts.

It's weird seeing someone who likes Skoda Felicias, possibly the grimmest cars ever made, go on and on about how undynamic a base spec Probe is. I don't think they're supposed to be all out sports cars, the Capri certainly isn't.

I like them, the subtle styling has aged well.

This is Autoshite. It has its own logic (somewhere, in the darkness, being driven away by a Renault 20 registered PU51 DRY).

Agreed, £3k is a bit rich, but I wouldn't have a power-wanker E46 of any spec given. They're incredibly bland, unless they're 1.3mm off your back bumper on any given motorway -then they're just annoying. Maybe they're a decent steer ; I've never seen one driven properly.
