Most uncomfortable car seats...

I don't think the comfort of a car's seats are the main buying criteria for most shiters

Are you kidding me? If the seats don't feel like a warm tweedy/velourious hug I'm not interested!

Worst seats - Bora/Golf/Passat -  absolute cripplers with no padding, it the main reason I would never buy VAG cars as i find all the seats excruciatingly uncomfortable

Best seats -  Honda (theres a suprise for you....), the S2000 buckets seats held you in place and were comfortable long stretches of driving were a doddle, 9 hours back from Fort William wasn't a hardship in them. Civic Type S (99-05 version) are also mega comfy, supportive and soft, same as the Leather seats in my Accord coupe they are a pleasure to slump into after a day at work.

Lexus are also good as are most Rover and Jag seats.

Leather ruins even the most comfortable seats by default. Except Mercedes seats, which are uncomfortable no matter what material they are wrapped with.

Pah, you havent even come close to uncomfortable seats until you have driven for 6 hours sat on these:

bear in mind the backrest comes up about halfway up your back.no adjustment save for unbolting the the seats and moving them forwards or backwards.

Much the same as Mini seats then, which I found quite comfortable. The cramped legroom less so.

Rover 75 leather seats aren't the best, lacking lumbar support I found. Same as 'soft' BX seats. I agree with the various Skoda Octavia seat comments though. I once had to do 200 miles in a day in a 200,000 mile Octavia and it was cripplingly uncomfortable! Just hard, completely unsupportive and plain nasty. W124 seats remain my favourite. I never found them comfortable when you first get in, but the fact I could get out six hours later and feel fine was entirely down to those seats.

I don't think the comfort of a car's seats are the main buying criteria for most shiters but certainly something worth considering.

It's a massive factor for me.

When I got together with the missus she has an alfa spider. The seats in that were absolute torture. Making it from swindon to swansea was a real chore. Once we got stuck in traffic adding a couple of hours to the journey - I ended up turned round facing backwards and kneeling on the passenger seat. It was seriously uncomfy.

So we sold the alfa as i hated it and I promised myself that i'd only buy cars with comfy seats for ever more. She wanted, and got (fair enough as it was her car and her money!) a leon. I've since learned that VAG seats are piss poor and almost as uncomfy as alfa's. I just don't fit vag ergonomics - and they're all the bloody same.

Now got a camry and a saab 9-5. Both comfy all the way to scotland. camry is more comfy than the saab. it's an underrated car that one.

In the past I found sierra's to be good, and my mk3 grandad was supremely comfy. A surprise contender is the nissan micra I had for a while for runs between manchester and bristol.

W124 seats certainly were carefully thought out- eg with 'comfort' also being not having to fish the contents of your trouser pocket out from under the seat- there are small valances where the front ones meet the centre console to prevent it.

The seats in my 2002 audi a6 looked great but didnt agree with my spine- Ruining what on paper was the best long distance mile muncher I'd owned. A massive tank range is only useful if the seat has a 'range' to match.

I can stand these for about 75-100 miles before my lower back starts questioning what the everliving fuck I'm doing. If they were bolted into something with sporting potential they would be great but in what was one of (or thee?) cheapest new cars available in the UK at the time they're just marketing bollocks. Made to look better than the normal ones in cheaper sepcs in the brochures. They've even got "harness" holes for goodness sake.

Peugeot 605.... bum-numbingly uncomfortable and the driving position is so bad you got cramp in about 10 minutes....

The seats in the MK1 Cortina I learnt to drive in were very uncomfortable.

I had Mini 1000  & clubman Estate with vinyl seats also 1275s with the striped fabric seats all good (I was young!)

My XR3i was comfortable.

My friends MK2 Golf, similar age Vimto & a couple of MK2 Scirrocos all gave me terrible back ache after a short drive or ride as a passenger.

Funnily enough my MK3 Golf GTI was pretty good.

Volvo V70 was lovely.

C4 VTS I have now is very good, but this one has full leather, the one I had before with the fabric mesh & alcantara was better (just)

The XM seat is a bit too squishy.

Any 1980s Mercedes are pretty dire

Worst ever though are the seats in Isuzu 7.5 tonne trucks. Do a long journey in those and you will regret it

The worst I've had was my zx . Fine around local but after an hour I was in agony .

The leather seats in my Saab are comfy for long distances but lack side support . Oddly enough I've always found landrovers reasonably comfy 😄

Mk1 MR2 seats, the back is too low and the headrest at its highest position meets the base of the neck. Think they were made for smaller Japanese people.

Best seats ever were in my recently sold impreza sport special, I suffer from my arthritis over long distances but those seats got to double the distance of the wife's mazda before I had even the slightest twinge. Other great seats were in the Volvo480 I had. The only car I have driven were my back was better when I got out than when I went in when I had a slipped disc.

If we can do vans, I hired an Iveco Daily when I went to England last year, fairly new but I think the seat was bust because all it did was bounce up and down the whole time, whatever I did with the adjustments. It was also hideously uncomfortable, giving me a pain in my arse after about 10 minutes that got so bad after an hour I had to kind of stand up to drive it. My mate I shared the driving with found the offset driving position rapidly gave him cramp in his leg too.

My jag x300, the seats have a million positions and everyone of them doesn't fit me

Worst seats for me were Astra seats, followed by Mini and Nissan Sunny, the MG seats played havoc with my back for the Cheshire trip.

Best were the V70, Herman and SAAB 9000.

Worst: Smart forTwo or whatever the cunting thing was. I had to buy my own chiropractor and keep him in the small boot space.

Best: Daf 44/46

Rover 75 leather seats do the job just fine, I've done 5000 miles in the last 4 weeks with not a hint of creakyness or numb arse. Hired an Astra a few months ago, dreadful, can't work out why anyone would exchange money for crap like that.

But the worst has to be a Merc Sprinter, also hired, that had seats fashioned on church pews. Sitting on a pile of rubble could be worse but not by much.

Lookshurry!

I've done longer sat on the old ally framed ones with broken rubber straps (ok, so I was over 50% younger and 35% lighter):

They're not too brutal - all things considered - once they're fixed though.

Merc A class - God damn like sitting on a church pew and with tiny  low profiles - Oh arrr oiuch

I'm getting on well with my new daily 406. The only thing that lets it down is that I find the seat a bit uncomfortable. They are quite squashy in a proper French way and although they are not terrible I need to try and find some type of back support to improve them. I find that an uncomfortable car seat can completely put you off an otherwise decent car. The worst car I had for this was an e30 which had leather seats that offered very little side support so you tended to slide off at each corner. You had to tense your arse muscles to try and stay in the correct position. I do have a dodgy back so this could be contributing. Also, the car has done 184k so the seat has seen a lot of bum action. Maybe I need to look for a Saab or Volvo as these cars have a reputation for excellent seats. What are other shiter's experiences? Have you ever had to get rid of your prized motor because of this?

Got to say, I'm on my second 406 and found the seats very comfy even over several hundred miles in a day.

The worst as far as I'm concerned? Vectra B. Always gave me backache for days afterwards and I don't suffer back problems at all usually.

The memory foam seats in the latest Mondeo are simply amazing.

Early Vectra B seats were made from something that had all the compliance of poured concrete.

I liked the one I drove for a while but had to deploy scatter cushions (and as I was single at the time, that meant going out and buying scatter cushions as I didn't have any in the house).

Primera on an 08 reg (no idea as to the model, sorry) didn't suit me, couldn't get comfy at all.

Best ones were in a 13 plate 320i, did Aberdeen to Bristol in those stopping only for fuel. No aches at all after that.

The ones in the F are good, I think. But then the longest I have spent in it was 2 hours. I needed a stretch afterwards but I wasn't in any discomfort

Not sure if it's the seats or the adjustment that was a problem for me on the Octavia. If it had another inch of backwards adjustment on the runners it might have been fine.

I'm normally quite tolerant of odd seats, you just bend yourself to fit like on a motorbike so I've had no problem in a Mini or Land Rover despite being 6'2" tall.

Volvo 740 and Porsche 924 were perfect for me, it's like they drew around my shape when the car's were designed so pedals, steering wheel and armrest are spot on.

The Lexus was a funny one. Even the LS400 is not brilliant for taller people. My dad is 6ft 4 and simply cannot fit in it. The seat does not go low enough and his head hits the roof - even with the sunroof cover back his head will then hit the ridge between the normal roof and the sunroof opening.

For me - 6ft 2 - it was only just okay, although the seats were surprisingly small in the length and I found myself noticing the fact I'd driven 50 or 60 miles after doing so. No lower-thigh support, and I couldn't have the back of the seat as vertical as I'd want. The electric headrests (LIKE A BOSS) were great but I wasn't able to use them really because of the permanently partially reclined position.

The seats were wide as fuck though.

I'm putting this down to the Japanese designing a car purely for the Yank market - the Yanks are clearly square human beings.

Supernaut is a little smaller than I am and I believe he found the seats sublime on his 300 mile northwards jaunt!
