Renault Laguna, Y reg. But why, Reg?

Yeah, I noticed the scenic was different while in the scrapyard yesterday.

ANYWAY... There is a 1.8 engine in ipswich with my name on it. Some haggling happened, I didn't get it for a tenner, but its a cheap lump if JohnK is prepared to haul it north for me.

I would weigh the ungrateful bastard in.

If if you source another lump/bottom end and fit it, the likelihood is that the devil will vomit in your kettle once again and something else expensive and made from unobtanium will die.

Park it where you found it and leave it.

I think they are a fab looking car but very soon they will be extinct in this country - you will have to go on leboncoin to get one.

I admire your fortitude though.

I'm sure it would be more fun buying another one for £20/£50 and fixing it cheaply.  Replacing an engine in a worthless Laguna that's already shown you its intentions sounds like unnecessary torture.

And certainly buying an MG6 would be a spectacular way of throwing £8k down the toilet in five minutes, albeit interesting.

The facelift was a step backwards. The front end is a mong, the interior plastics are FAR worse and they added a fucking electric parking plate. That said, I do want one! A 55 plate V6 Initiale. The 06 plate brought the tax up to £485 pa.

No, I reckon repairing this ungrateful little shit of a car is the right thing to do.

It clearly longed to be dumped in a carpark, like a vehicular tramp, supping cheap Tesco mineral oil and being threatening to anyone brave enough to give it a chance. You cleaned it up, you replaced the wonky reader and it takes you for a fool.

Teach it there's no easy way out of life. Teach it that the crusher is a a coward's way.

Yep. The original Slaguna was a very fine looking car and the arselift ruined it. I wouldn't have one.

I think Y reg Laguna's are the new J Reg Protons.

I went for the test drive, interesting it wasn't. Totally bland and normal feeling modern car, in a fetching shade of black with an all black interior. Disaster Area...

Anyway, new list is £13,995 but there is a £2k part ex deal. They also said if you don't part ex anything they will still knock £1500 off anyway. Good eh? No, there is a 14 month waiting list for the basic model and plenty of the £16,995 "Magnette" (I actually lol'd)

Then they ruined it by trying to flog me the demo car for £10,500... it's 3 months old and has less than 1k miles on it (and it's the swishy 17k model!)

I said I'd think about it. Maybe in a decade year or two when it's free.

Lots of low mileage examples on ebay.

No doubt some of them have done more miles vertically (on four post lifts) than they have horizontally.

Some dealers asking mondeo/vectra money for something that is more difficult to shift than ebola.

Some private buyers asking three figures for scrap that is worth £40.

I think owing one of these is the automotive equivalent of auto erotic asphyxiation.

If our focus shits itself at MOT time I may well have a dabble.

Bren, do you mean the MG or the Laguna?

OK, just checking because everything you said also applies to the MG6 - looking on ebay, 3 year old and 14k miles for £5 grand and no takers!

Lets face it, I'm spending pocket money on the Laguna. I spend more a month on beer than the engine is going to cost, and the work in swapping it is trivial really. I know it drives OK, and I already paid for the tax. YOLO.

The MG6 is only worth £3.5k tops, and there are hundreds knocking about in the used trade thanks to our friends at Mavis Rent a Shed. Good luck Scary with the transplant, be careful the engine isn't full of turnip juice, being from East Angular LOL

There is nothing like the excellence of sorting out something worthless for washing machine money, I find it enjoyable swapping in a mix and match motor with the added thrill of a tentative test drive post fitment that gradually works its way through mild confidence to repeated redline thuggery because it needs to be responsibly proven* of which in my case usually requires a stop to retrieve the tools that clatter out under the car after tumbling down the inner wing

hope it goes smoothly!

Bugger we paid retail then at £400 for a 53 1.9 DCI Estate and it's still crap. :-(

Looking forward to seeing the engine swap hope it repays you the favour.

2003 is very nearly newer than any car I've ever had.  And it's £125.

No wonder people look down on me in my car that's 16 years old, they must think I can't even stretch to a ton to get a car from this century.

Are you going to trailer it back or throw caution to the wind an drive it back?

Posted

Its only 20 miles from my garage  so i think I'm gonna bike over in the howling wind and pissing rain then drive it back (or halfway back then cycle home again after it breaks down)

I'd be worried the ticking noise is the self destruct mechanism priming.

It's a Renault, that part will break in good time

Viking funeral. I can't believe they are so bad. I know the French don't exactly make the most reliable cars but for fuck sake these Lagunas break everything.

New style roffle?

Twenty tickets, 'winner' is the ticket for the mile it breaks down in on the way home.

I found myself letting a guy out of a junction because he was driving a Laguna II and I felt sorry for him.

I've spent too much time reading this thread.
