Renault Laguna, Y reg. But why, Reg?

Bad, bad times.

Hopefully the breaker will see you right.

If not then Scenic gearbox conversion? Or transfer new internals into old block? Failing that possibly sweet, sweet fire?

It's magic you're taking this much trouble over it, I hope you're going to raffle it at the end.

I think that's pretty much a certainty. I'm already deciding what to drive instead and I think it's probably going to be a sierra.

Dink - they sold it to me on ebay and it's clearly not as described. I'm hoping to persuade them to send another one ASAP and collect this at the same time because massive ballsup. No way am I spending more money on a gearbox that fits the engine but mightn't fit the car.

That's why I hate engine swaps . I did one on a Volvo v50 2.0d last month and even with the same engine codes I had to swap the following

Inlet manifold / throttle bodies

Thermostat housing

Crank sensor

Flywheel

Drivers engine mount etc

Some of which I didn't find out til the engine was in !

Grrr

I know what you mean. It's why I was methodical and careful with everything removed to the extent of checking that parts were going to fit the new engine. I think this is the first time I've come across an incorrect bellhousing pattern though.

Actually, while typing that I remembered it isn't. Phase 1 and phase 2 Talbot horizons have different bellhousing patterns because the early one is a simca gearbox and the later one is a peugeot one. Guess how I found that out (on the drive of a council house almost 25 years ago...)

I bought a BMW M42 (DOHC) engine on Ebay from a breakers up in the NE for £60. They sent an M43 (SOHC) on a pallet. I sent an Ebay message - polite as I wasn't that bothered as it was only as a spare. They refunded me instantly and told me the keep the M43, didn't want it back.

All that effort for an old Slagooner!

No room for a couple of mole grips on there to keep them together?

Or just weld the gearbox to the block. Sealed for life, or something.

"So we drilled them out so that it would fit, and with a little help from an adaptor kit we had that engine running just like a song"

Now look here. If I'm going to the extent of adaptor plates/drilling/mole grips to get an engine in there, I might as well do it properly* and fit a Pinto.

I don't know any swear words strong enough for this situation. Sorry.

...I see loads of Laguna II's round here in the West Midlands.

I had exactly the same with my Lupo about 7 or 8 years ago.

The original engine was burning loads of oil, I looked about and Lupo engines all had just as many miles on and were mega $$$ so I decided to be "smart" and expand my search. it's only a 1.4 16v "small block" VW engine I thought, I'll make something newer fit, so I got a mega low miles one from a mk4 Ibiza which was only about 3 years old at the time. My mate had one at work so I spent about half an hour looking round all the engine mounts and manifolds etc to make sure it was the same and I was certain it would fit.

Got to roughly the same stage as you before I noticed my cockup -  I think I got as far as trying to attach the gearbox before I noticed the bellhousing was a totally different patter with the starter motor on the other side.

It's such a pisser when you've spent so long on something already. It's a good job Lupos come apart really easily as I was only about 2 hours into the job. If it had been raining I would have probably just thrown the old engine through the windscreen and scrapped the lot.

Anyway fair play for giving it as many chances as you already have, Most people would have skipped it about 15 times by now.

Appears to be the following engine codes for F4P:

JR5 gearbox: (5 speed manual)

F4P770, F4P772, F4P774

DP0 gearbox: (5 speed auto)

F4P771, F4P773, F4P775

Maybe you have a F4P that mated with an auto box?

Edit: Just saw the pictures again and re-saw the clutch plates...

It's OK, a trawl through Ebay has confirmed it for me.

F4K 1.8 from a 2002 Megane Scenic. (edit - it's a F4R, there is no such thing as a F4K but the block stamp looks like one)

Fugging hell man, the breaker needs bloody shooting if you ask me. Still, let's hope they can rectify the problem and get correct engine out to you. Keep going with it, will be ace when it's finished.

Further digging - F4R 2.0 from a 6 speed laguna, megane or scenic seems most likely. Early F4P and F4R have the same bellhousing pattern and the JR5 box but later 2.0 has an entirely different bellhousing because of the box.

It's also really difficult to get any clear info off renaultforums! Most questions of this nature seem to get two uninformed "yeah, it wil probably fit" answers then nothing for 3 years.

Anyway, when the main dealer quoted me for replacement front brake pads I decided to do the job myself. I visited ECP armed with my VIN and reg details only to be told it could be one of six different types. Bloody Renaults!

Typical Renault, I'm afraid. When I tried to order a cambelt for my old Megane diesel, I found out there were three slightly different variants of the same engine which used three completely different belts ! FFS, what's the bloody point ?

Hells teeth man you seem to be taking this remarkably well. I would have well and truly thrown my toys out of the pram by now and would probably be sat sulking in the corner.

Good luck getting it sorted.

Two useless engines, one rubbish car.

I phoned the breakers first thing, they are sending me another engine and don't want the other one back. I also checked in the scrapyard and it is the correct engine for a 2.0 16v laguna with a 6 speed box. Anyone need it?

The way these seem to be finding favor around here someone will want it one day!

Result ! Sell the 2-litre engine on ebay and use the proceedings (an estimated 99p) to buy another Laguna !

Are enough parts common between the two engines to rebuild it? Or make some sort of frankenstien Laguna II.

Probably, but he would still need to use the old engine block which is very likely to be borked.

Hasn't Mr B just bought a 2.0 with a strange ticking noise?

Use the spare engine for a unique Largoona rear engine conversion. Scaffold pole and zip ties as propshaft, back axle from a Transit or something similar and then weld, hammer and grind a bit to make it fit. Then, if you still don't have any luck on the replacement lump up front, you've got the spare in the back to keep you on the road.

I like your optimism.

Mr Bs is a diesel slurper I think.

Posted

Nah, he's not THAT stupid!

My Laguna has a 5-speed box (I think), because of that the crankshaft rotates in the opposite direction or something, so this engine is no good to me

Posted

Unless yours is an IDE (and I hope for your sake it isn't...) the top end should be the same.

TBH I think I'll throw it on ebay for collect only 99p start (may swap XBOX_PHONE_CORSA) when the other engine turns up. It looks like it's actually harder to find a 6 speeder if you need one!
