A 1.4 307 will be gutless as feck.  Otherwise, they're dull but not too bad for the prices they're making now - although they do suffer from "modern" Peugeot issues to an extent, they're not the worst of the breed.

That was another supposed fault....sluggish .. but it can't be any more sluggish than  our HRV vtec when it ain't vtecing !

About two years ago I was offered a 51 reg 1.6 with 6 months mot for £250. Very straight and drove well with about 85000 on the clock and most service history.

The dealer who offered it me was trying to get his money back as his attempts to make a quick profit in the trade had failed miserably.

He eventually sold it for £200.

I attended one at the side of the M8 the other day. It had caught fire. Unfortunately the fire brigade put it out.

That's all I have to say about that.

A car I most dislike. Bereft of the old Peugeot ride/ handling magic, probably because suspension engineer Jean Baudin retired during its development. Ushered in the era of inanely grinning grilles and unnecessarily heavy platforms at Peugeot. They still haven't quite recovered.

Heater fan will be resistor and melted loom . Repair kit available but an ass to fit .

Dull and terrible . Loads of leccy/ bsi issues and expensive lower arms when ball joints fail .

I think the 307 is the same underneath as my Citroen C4, which I like a lot and is now on 174000 (not a 1.4 though). I believe the 1.4 suffers HGF quite a lot. The heater may be the resister as above, but could be the cogs that move the flaps (if it has climate) and a cheap fix kit is available.

I looked at one for Mrs. PBK's nephew. It was cheap at a couple of hundred quid and did the job of r a few years. Decent size, comfy and looked ok (in my eyes) for a modern car.

I think it was a 1.6 possibly, can't quite recall.

The sills like to rot out, the 1.4 is pooh in something that lardy.

A genuine heater resistor is about 40quid and is found by removing the glovebox and then the heater fan, it is in the housing.

They took everything that made the 306 a good car and threw it away, then added ugly

Perfect summary.  When Autocar magazine was still good, you could feel their huge disappointment when first testing this car.

Fortunately I left Peugeot in Summer 2001 just as they were completely losing the plot.

Coincident with Jean Baudin's retirement, perhaps?

Appalling cars. Badly made, unreliable and totally devoid of any character or other desirable traits.

Other than that, they're fine.

My Dad is on his 2nd. 1st was bought new with cash in 2002, breaking a tradition of getting Toyotas because he didn't like how small the rear visibility was on the new Corolla. He doesn't like them anywhere near as much as the Carina II that came before it, but a divorce and redundancy put paid to anything new on the executive scale. The gearbox gave up on that 1 after about 6 years, so he traded that in for a 2 year old phase 2 grinning one with all the toys in 2008/9, which is what he still has. He may have had the rub of the green, but no real issues to report other than the gearbox on number one (I think he was on something like 120,000 when it went, and the car is still alive now according to the MOT check).

But not as poised as the 306, or the Focus.

I would just offer them scrap price, don't bother with sorting the fan out, just run it till it drops. Take the remarkably fragile indicator stalks out then weigh it in.

They are shit.

I had a nearly new one and it was fucked. God knows what 10-15 years of use would do.

Abs sensors- they use a magnetic pick up that is bolted to the cast iron hub carrier.

If the abs light is on (near enough a dead cert) then you need to unbolt the sensors and clean all the rust off behind them so that there is an air gap between them and the magnetic hub. Then repeat every 3-4 months.

Indicator self cancelling mechanism is made of brie, if it works, it soon won't- just live with it as replacing it is an utter bastard.

Easy to drive, in a dull, lifeless sort of way.

We considered one of these for the wife, after her old daily was written off by an old fella driving a Trannie a little too carelessly to deliver his load of eggs to the local ice cream company. Needless to say, the eggs were mostly broked. Naively, I thought 307s may be OK after I'd enjoyed owning my old 306 D turbo a few years previous.

After some time spent on the net trawling various owners woes, faults and general pain, we steered well clear and instead opted for a reliable* Deutsche. It definitely seemed to be the generation of Pug where it all started to go tits up. Shite, but not in an endearing way.

You can always be assured of getting an honest opinion about a car on here with no bullshit. Don't waste time talking about ergonomics or how many cupholders it has. Just the things that are likely to go wrong and how easy/hard they are to fix. One of the reasons I love this site so much!

Well scrap price (even for something as lardy as a 307) will be about 50 quid at the moment, so if you can get it for 60 it'll be worth having I s'pose.

Wow. Absolute unmitigated and universal hatred.

Pretty sure that makes it an essential purchase.

Spare no detail/misery from the your new owners thread.

Ta.

I've only ever driven one 307, a 1.6 I think and I thought it wasn't too bad. As a sub £200 disposable modern car then they have some merit.

I'm rather surprised by some of the problems quoted as I said earlier, my C4 is the same underneath & had no problems with indicator stalks or ABS. Plus I really like it in every way so I thought the Pug would be similar although I don't much like the appearance of those (except the 307cc).
